THE POWER OF INTROVERTS
Tumblr media
Going beyond the Title, “shy and quiet.”
In this world we live in, it is said to have two types of people - extroverts and introverts.
Identifying which end of the scale you belong to is important because it has a significant impact on your relationships, whether with yourself or with others. These two dimensions of human personality traits introduced by the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung in 1921 differ in where they receive their energy from. Introverts are more reserved and passive and they are utmost comfortable spending their time alone or with a small group of people or with one-on-one relationships, while extroverts are sociable and assertive, enjoy being the life of the party, and are energized by being with larger groups of people. And, in this modern world where it seemed to become a big networking ball, the latter personality type became ideal. This is where bias comes into play. The extroverts’ loudness, outgoing and cheerful attitudes are perceived as dominance, confidence, happiness, and the ultimate ladder to success. Meanwhile, the soft-spoken, quiet, introverts with their calm demeanor are being out shadowed. And, this perspective of introverts should be altered. To be honest, being an introvert is much more than being branded as shy and quiet. (Kennah Louisse, foreword)

“Quiet people have the loudest minds.”— Stephen Hawking
Stephen Hawking, a renowned physicist acknowledged how quiet introverts tend to be brilliant. Even I know a lot of people who have introverted personalities and I learned that most of them stay silent because they spend a lot of time thinking about sensible things to say. They like to observe, listen and wait then speak when it matters the most. Unfortunately, their actions are deemed as being rude or uninterested when they really are just in their deep thoughts.
There are even big celebrities and well-respected ‘quiet’ leaders who are introverts. You may be familiar with Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Rosa Parks, and Bill Gates (Manfre, 2022). These people became well-known because of their achievements and expertise, not because of their introversion. Thus, you do not need to alter your personality type to become successful, you just need to utilize your own introverted characteristics to your advantage. Consequently, this will become the ultimate weapon in your life. So, what are these characteristics that make introverts powerful?
THE STRENGTHS OF BEING AN INTROVERT
The strengths of introverts usually are being overlooked. Here are the hidden strengths of being an introvert along with testimonies from introverts themselves on how they manipulated these to their own advantage.
FOCUS
Tumblr media
“Focus is the wellspring of momentum.” - Eula Kaira, 2022
As a meticulous overthinker, growing up as an introvert in a very competitive setting made adulthood a little more challenging for me. I have always felt like there was something wrong with my quiet demeanor. But, what I learned is that some introverts are constrained or inhibited, which means, they think before acting. But why do introverts spend a longer time calculating the next step?
According to an online article published in 2021 entitled, “What an Introvert Is - and Isn’t” written by Holland and Raypole stated that introverts have an inclination to lose themselves in the inner environment of their minds and are more prone than extroverts to act with restraint. For example, I tend to keep my ideas and feelings to myself, and I will not pursue rushed impulses or new experiences until I have given myself lots of time to focus and consider the available options.
There was nothing wrong with me, I was just pushed to conform to standards set for personality types that are not synonymous with mine.
IMAGINATION
Tumblr media
“Your Imagination is the only limitation. ” - Justinn, 2022
Growing up as an introvert, taught me to view things from a broader perspective. The expression "introverts have an entire planet within their heads" is taken literally. Most may have several galaxies. Thus, going to my own safe area and reading a good book helped me glide across space. It's amazing how our own imagination can make things come true.
DEEP RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS
Tumblr media
“In greater depth holds stronger bonds.” - Ruzzvy Gwynne, 2022
As someone who craves friendships, growing up as an introvert made it hard to do so. I tend to spend my time alone and if I do socialize, I’d be wary of the people around me and observant of how they act towards me. Others will befriend me for their own convenience, but they won't last long. Hence only having a small but genuine group of friends. But is having a small group of friends a bad thing or a good thing?
“Your number may be small, but all of you have the biggest support system in your life. And yes, they will be the most honest people on the planet.” ( Balqish, 2017) Strength in numbers? No, but strength in depth. I realized that what I really need is small and deep connections rather than numerous short terms.
I only treasure diamonds that who also treasure me like one. Being picky about who'd I be friends with, helped me create stronger, genuine, and special bonds.

"Being an introvert in this world full of extroverts makes YinYang work." - Mary Joe, 2022
Black and White have distinct purposes but they will always work when combined. This is how the two types of people work, despite their differences in expressing themselves.
I am an Extrovert. The person who would go the extra mile just so she could befriend someone. The person who is a friend to everybody. And being that kind of person is not a piece of cake, it takes a lot of responsibilities and energy to maintain one's personality. A Professional Counselor, Madeleine DiLeonardo MEd, LPC, NCC says that "Extroverts feel energized by communication and engaging with others, tend to be very social, are often comfortable in group settings, enjoy stimulating activities, and value direct expression of feelings within relationships," while on the other hand, "Introverts typically do not like being the center of attention, need a significant amount of alone time, can be overwhelmed by large gatherings or events, and value quality time." DiLeornardo adds. And it gives justice to the thought that says, Extroverts are the Yang to the Yin of Introverts. They are the sweet to our savory, the outtie to our innie, the — well, you get the point. There is no doubt that introverts and extroverts have complementary qualities because of Opposite Attracts.
How does it work by the way? According to the book The Irresistible Introvert written by the remarkable author Michaela, Compromise is what keeps an introvert-extrovert friendship afloat. Sometimes, you’ll have to be okay with sharing your best friend with all her other best friends, because you know that this is what she needs. Other times, she’ll have to be okay with slowing down and hanging out one-on-one with you in a chill place, because she knows that this is what you need.
Being introverted does not necessarily mean that someone is shy, and the main difference between being introverted and extroverted is in regards to how energy is gained, extroverts make life more interesting and exciting. They take you on adventures and help you to see the world from a new perspective. Know that wherever you go, you can meet either of the two of them, but you shall not worry because they keep the temperature balanced, and the contrast maintained, and this makes the YinYang work.

My mind wanders a lot, until I hurt myself with overthinking situations that would never happen to me but still, I've always thought of it leading their way to reality due to unexpected circumstances.
When I was younger, the people around me always thought I was a brilliant kid. An achiever, obedient and the perfect child anyone could ask for. I didn't involve myself with anything that will be considered as a breach of my good character, I always, distanced myself.
But the thing is, my parents, my family, and my entire environment raised a conformist, indecisive and dependent teen. I admit that I am fully a follower by the rules and law. With only thinking to obey whatever the regulations states, I became a kid that was scared of disappointments. I have strived harder, to please my parents and my entire family. I have won contests and garnered awards for me to own and never let go of my title.
"The Perfect Daughter"
Maybe, that's why I loved art so much. Any bodies of art, I am fully interested. Some of my most favorites were drawing, reading, painting, writing, composing and dancing. Those things are things I have control with. There was no right, there was no wrong, but only the perfect balance of everything.
But, growing up, my passion for it was lost. All I was thinking was to achieve academically, and pursue careers of great names. I lost it, the creativity and my vast imagination. I am now a bland, typical, teenager without any ambition. As still now, I am waiting for the confirmation and instructions given to me to be able to further step forward.
This is funny, I never knew what I was going to say but if you ever reached this far, thankyou for reading my rambles during the rainy days in my dark room.

So, I was very curious at what happened to Kissing Booth (since I haven't watched it) because it's blowing up on my feed today, and I decided to watch it anyways since I don't have anything to do. CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY SHOULD ELLE DRESS UP LIKE A HOOKER AT THE SCHOOL WEARING THAT SHORT-ASS SKIRT? She didn't even wear any cycling shorts whatever. Like who would on their right mind? 😬

Like what if it is not the true 'right', how do you know it is worth fighting for?
They say never stop believing that fighting for what's right is worth it. But what if your 'right' is different from other's 'right'? Is it still the right thing to do?

“A helpful question to ask during the writing process is: what is the heart of your story? What are the questions, topics, or emotions that you want to explore throughout the story, that you find yourself constantly coming back to? If you feel like you’re stuck on the plot itself, or that things aren’t moving forward in the story, try to set the ‘heart’ of your story as your compass, write around it, and let it guide your way.”
Christina Li is a student at Stanford University studying Economics. In her spare time, when she is not stressing over her latest stats problem set, she is writing up characters and stories for children and young adults, or perhaps procrastinating on said writing by drinking copious amounts of tea and binge-watching Avatar: the Last Airbender. She started NaNo-ing in sixth grade with the NaNoWriMo Young Writer’s Program and hasn’t stopped since. Her debut middle grade novel, Clues to the Universe, is coming out from HarperCollins/Quill Tree Books in January 2021.
