I don't usually write romance—I'm more of a fantasy / sci-fi / historical fiction person—but my friend requested it, and I thought this could be a good time to try and improve this particular type of writing (which is most definitely not my strong suit)...
I'm posting the chapters on Wattpad (here), so if anyone wanted to check out a summer love story (or had advice for writing one) go check it out! It's not particularly good (imo), but maybe I can get better?
It's called MAYFLOWER STREET, and it's about it's a summery, slow burn e-t-l romance (more under cut).
also take a moment to enjoy the cover my friend made for me 🤍
Celeste Ling has only seen glimpses of the Aubrey and Arlo Lansdowne media life: pearls on a string, silky dresses, flashing cameras. It's nothing to crave for, nothing when she's seen the horrors of it, too.
But her love for romance stories and the perfect ever-after draws her in this time: in a job that would bring her influence to a potential hit movie, starring the one and only Aubrey.
Cast parties? Photoshoots? Costumes? All with her best friend, too. Sign her up. Competing against Aubrey's older brother on a take-all-or-lose-all bet was definitely not part of the plan, though…nor was the cutthroat competition--or all of her rom-com dreams unraveling.
Now, she has to find her way out of the mess…and hopefully into someone's arms, because at the end of the day, Celeste's still a girl who dreams of summer love.

Chapter 9~
Word count - 1.9k
MILES’S POV
The tension in the room was tangible. A full class of eager teenagers silently tapping their feet against the floor in anticipation, knuckles impatiently drumming against the desks and busy eyes swimming back and forth, tracking the hand of the clock that was only two minutes away from providing them all with sweet freedom for the next two and a half days.
Friday, last period; also known as the best day of the week. Today at Brookefield, it was the day of the supposed biggest party of the year.
As soon as the clock struck and the bell rung, signifying the end of the school day, halls were swarmed with jittery and excited students. Either talking about what they were going to wear or who they were trying to impress.
In the midst of it all was me.
Locked inside a bathroom stall, fumbling for more tissues from the toilet paper roll.
Desperately trying to keep the deep cut on my wrist from yesterday’s visit home bleeding out even more.
…………………………………………….
GRACIES’S POV
Moments after last period ended, I re-grouped with Ames to start getting ready in our dorm. We both agreed that we would have three goals for the night.
1. Look hot
2. Dance until we get dragged out of the floor
3. Get wasted cause fuck we deserve it
“Have you seen Miles around?” Ames asked me from outside the shower cubicle. “Haven’t seen the guy properly today,”
“I think he went home yesterday,” I said, scrunching my eyebrows in confusion at the fact that I too had not in fact seen his obnoxious self for the entire day.
“Eh, he should be alive. I heard he and Theo got into a bit of a fight,” She said, as I wrapped a towel around my chest and came out of the shower.
“They always fight, what was it about this time?” I asked with an amused tone, prepping my skin in front of the mirror.
“I don’t know, but I have a feeling it’s pretty serious, Theo hasn’t heard from him since it happened either,”
That’s weird.
“It’s pretty strange if you ask me, I mean, they’re practically joined at the hip,” Ames said, reading out my thoughts.
“I’m sure he’s fine,” I said, something in me hoping that he was, really.
“Anyways, you’re wearing that dress, right?” Ames asked me, now straightening her hair, alluding to the gorgeous black dress that she showed me the day before.
“Yes ma’am,” I said to which she shook her head with a small smile.
After a while of trying to get an even eye-liner, almost burning myself with a hair straightener and squeezing myself into a dress that I knew was hugging myself a tad bit much for my normal comfort, Ames and I ended up staring at ourselves in the mirror.
“Damn,” I said.
“We look hot,” she deadpanned, turning around a bit to get a glimpse of her behind. “My ass looks great, what the fuck?” she said, contorting her upper and lower body in opposite directions.
“When did you grow out those?” she asked, pointing to my chest to which I covered them with my arms in embarrassment.
“Jesus, Ames,” I said in a breathy laugh, turning around to lightly smack her on her shoulders.
“Well sorry for stating the facts,” She defended herself in a matter-of-fact tone. “They really have grown what the fuck?” she quipped further.
“Alright, that’s enough from you,” I said with a chuckle. “And what about you huh? You look stunning,” I said, eyeing her figure cladded in a sheer top and a mini skirt up and down.
“Ah, that need not be said darling, I already know it,” she said with her eyebrows raised before we both fell into a fit of giggles.
“Come now, dear friend for the night awaits us,” she continued on with her little skit, dragging me out of the room and into the night.
……………………………………………………………..
MILES’S POV
The burning sensation of the whiskey travelling down inside provided me with a comfort I didn’t even I know I needed. I leaned back on the bar top soon after I chugged down the I don’t- even -know -which shot of the strong alcoholic drink.
Subconsciously, I scratched at my cut which had begun to irritate against the material of the black shirt I was wearing. My ministrations were quickly halted when I noticed Theo making his way to me, trying to push past the drunk, swaying bodies on the dance floor. I quickly unfolded my sleeve, trying my best not to attract attention to the action.
“Well, you look… great,” he said, eyes blowing wide for a moment. “Rough day?” He said before ordering a drink for himself.
“You could say that,” I said, chugging down another shot before whipping off the remnants that had travelled its way down to my chin.
He nodded tentatively before placing one of his hands on my shoulder. “Hey, you ok?” He said with furrowed eyebrows.
I raised my eyebrows in feigned confusion before nodding. “Yeah, why would I not be mate, it’s a lovely night, this is a rather lovely drink, and there are quite lovely ladies here I must say-“
“Mate, I’m sorry about yesterday alright. I’m just worried about her, you know that,” Theo said, looking straight at me.
I paused for a few moments. Of course he cared about her. He cares about everyone. It was me and my stupid ignorance that was the problem.
“You don’t have to be sorry mate, you didn’t do anything. It’s me that should be apologizing, my reaction was unwarranted and purely out of frustration, I don’t actually hate your guts, if that provides you with any comfort at all,” I said, my lips quipping up at the amused upturn of his.
“How could you Miles, I’m amazing,” He said with a cocky smirk.
“Ah, there he is,” I said raising my eyebrows and nodding my head once solemnly before letting out a chuckle.
Shortly after we were back to our usual dynamic. Talking about classes, family and nodding at any girl that gave us any look from across the room every five minutes or so.
“Where are the girls?” Theo asked, using a toothpick to pick the olive off of his drink. “Gracie was supposed to bring me here but she was taking so long to get ready with Ames and I couldn’t bear hearing them trying to decide between the white or beige shoes,” he said with a chuckle.
Smiling into my drink as I took a sip of it, I responded to his comment. “I swear to God, it’s like they’re dressing up for Paris fashion week or some shit, like it’s just a party for God sak-“ I couldn’t finish my sentence when I saw her walking in, hand in hand with Amelie.
“Speak of the devil,” Theo said with a laugh as he waved both his hands over his head obnoxiously. I could see the smiles drop off of their faces as Gracie and Ames looked around in embarrassment before shuffling over quickly.
“Is he drunk already?” Amelie said, dragging Theo’s still suspended arms back down before taking a seat on one of the bar stools, ordering a drink for herself.
“Gracie you want something?” She asked, contorting her upper body backward to pose the question to which Gracie raised her eyebrows and looked at Ames.
“Uh, maybe not right now, thank you though,” She said with a smile before ending her comment with a single nod.
“Alright, suit yourself,” Ames said, turning back around in her seat.
It was then that I wished that I too was seated so I could easily swivel back in my seat without getting dragged into making small talk with Gracie. But most importantly, I wished so, so that I could easily avoid my eyes travelling up and down her figure. Because Fuck, she looked good.
“You and Theo ok now?” She asked, nodding her head toward Theo.
“How’d you know we fought in the first place? You that obsessed?” I asked and smiled when she rolled her eyes.
“Women talk, you know, and besides the two of you are basically joined at the hip. Not seeing you two in proximity for a whole day sort of threw the world off its axis,” She remarked, raising a single eye brow.
“Yeah we’re ok now, what about you and Ames?” I asked to which she furrowed her eye brows. “Men talk too as a fact,” I said slightly leaning towards her.
“We’re fine,” She said, a slight smile on her face.
What followed was a moment of silence which my eyes took to betray my beliefs as they roamed around her.
“You look good,” I said non-chalantly, taking a sip off my drink, to which she was taken by surprise as she blew her eyes wide open.
“uh, thank you, you don’t look too bad yourself,” She said, and that’s when I noticed her tucking her dress down from her sides, here gaze bouncing from side to side around her.
I cocked my eyebrow when she slowly dragged her hands up and down her arms, in an attempt to bring warmth and calm the clear goosebumps that had risen throughout her body.
“If you knew you were going to feel uncomfortable why the fuck would you wear this,” I said staring off to the dance floor where she was staring at previously.
She rolled her eyes before taking a quick deep breath. “It isn’t uncomfortable at all, thank you very much,” She said although her hands contradicted her as they reached to tug down on her dress.
“Jesus, you are stubborn,” I said under my breath before I reached behind to grab Theo’s jacket to put around her.
“What are you doing,” She said, bewildered, placing her hand on my shoulder as I leaned close.
When I looked her in the eyes, ready to shoot a snarky remark her way, I was slightly thrown off at her wavering pupils, dancing around as they tried to keep contact with mine. And that’s when I made my realization.
She’s nervous.
I smirked before replying. “You’re cold Gracie, just put this on,” I said, leaning even closer and pushing her to the edge. That’s when I noticed her quickened breath.
Bingo.
When I slowly dragged my eyes to look into hers, I heard her breath stifle before she swiftly swerved away from my vicinity and went up to Ames, grabbing the shot glass she was about to drink and chugged it down, wincing at the strong taste.
“I’m dancing, you coming?” She asked Ames, grabbing her hand before a reply was even given.
“Hell yes,” Ames said breathlessly with a wide smile, quickly running off with Gracie onto the dance floor, disappearing among the sea of bodies.
Gracie was a light weight; we all knew this. I could physically see the alcohol changing her demeanor when she got more comfortable and sensual on the dance floor to which I scoffed, taking a sip of the drink in my hand.
But it was when she turned to look at me after a few moments did I realize the game she had decided to play today. Because there she was, confident as ever, holding eye contact from across the dance floor with a smirk on her lips.
Gracie Abbott, you’re going to be the death of me.

Chapter 8~
Word count- 1.4k
Gracie’s POV
Once I got back to Brookfield the next day, my life seemed like a mess. My parents, well they’re being my parents, I have no way of getting out of a young marriage that will most likely ruin my youth, Miles is the asshole he always is, my best friend keeps acting weird and is distant around me, and I can’t seem to focus in school. The only constant that was in my life at the moment was the ever present sunshine that is Theo Reyes.
And that’s how I found myself in the corner store, perusing through the snack aisle and spending Monday evening with him. After he kindly paid for the food, we resumed walking back to school, unconsciously taking the long way back.
“So, I have news for you,” I said, taking a sip of my yogurt drink.
“Oh yeah, what is it?” He asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.
“Calm down, it’s nothing like that,” I said, making fun of his giddiness. “There’s a party tomorrow night,” I said, waiting for his reaction before I moved on.
“Okay?” He said, tentatively. “And?” he said with a small smile.
“Well, I was wondering if you’d like to go with me,” I said, jumping a bit to get in front of him and flash him a bright grin.
He laughed fondly and nodded to himself as if taking my request into consideration.
“Ok, I’ll go, but what about Ames? She turned you down?” He asked to which I turned my back to him and kept walking.
“I would ask her if she’d talk to me,”
“Hey, what’s going on?” He asked, his tone taking on one of seriousness.
“Nah, it’s nothing,” I brushed it off, taking a sip of my drink, to which I was met with silence.
When I turned to face him, he halted, waiting for a reply.
I let out a sigh before shrugging my shoulders.
“I don’t know Theo, everything's just changed. She’s not talking to me as much and whenever we do talk, it’s great, but- I don’t know. I feel like she’s growing distant,” I said, staring into the grass beside the footpath.
“Did you try talking to her about it?” He asked, his voice quieter than normal.
When I didn't reply he let out a deep breath.
“Listen, I know you have a hard time with confrontation but this is your fucking best friend alright? You two need to talk shit out and communicate, otherwise you’re just suppressing your emotions and that’s not great for anyone ok?” He said, holding me in place by the shoulders.
When I looked back at him, the sincerity in his eyes made me appreciate him even more.
I nodded at his remark and a soft smile bloomed on his face.
“Atta girl, now, tell me why you chose me to go to this party over Miles,” His signature smirk coming into action.
“Oh shut up you cocky little bitch,” I said with a laugh, playfully shoving him backward.
“Yeah, yeah,” He said, ruffling my hair before throwing an arm over my shoulder.
“You love me more, just admit it,” he said sneakily, to which I scoffed.
“You wish Theo Reyes,”
……………………………………………………………….
Miles’s POV
“Jesus, what’s wrong with you?” Amelie suddenly asked, scaring me in the process.
“God Ames, you can’t just jump out of nowhere like that,” I said, clutching my chest.
“Yes I can. so, what’s up?” She said, coming over to take a seat in the chair across from mine.
“Really, you’re deciding to spend this fine evening with me?” I asked in skepticism, raising an eyebrow in the process.
“Well, I just wanted to spend time with my dear buddy,” She said, patting my shoulder twice in fake excitement, raising her voice an octave higher to make the whole thing even more feigned.
“What? Gracie left you today?” I asked, smiling knowingly at the glint of annoyance in her eyes.
“How’d you know?” She asked, leaning back in her seat and crossing her arms across her chest.
“Theo ditched me too,” I said with a sigh, looking out the window.
“Oh,” She replied simply.
“Yeah,”
“Well this is fucking awkward,” She said, looking at her nails.
“Yep,” I said, tightening my lips into a straight line. Right when I began speaking a loud laugh broke through the room and Theo and Gracie came in, wide smiles on their faces.
“Where were you two?” Ames beat me to my question.
“Oh we just went out for a walk,” Gracie says, a breathless laugh following it.
“Just the two of you? That’s rude Gracie, I thought your future husband would be your obvious choice for evening strolls,” I said with a smirk, internally cooing at how fast her morphed into an expression of annoyance.
“Shut up Miles, give your stupid mouth a break would you?” She asks, her face reddening with each word uttered.
“Hey, they live to serve especially for stupid people like you, I thought you’d enjoy it,” I said with a feigned pout of sadness.
When she looks away, trying to calm herself, I take the moment to have some more fun.
“No can do princess, they’re reserved just for you,” I said with a wink.
She huffs with a roll of her eyes and stares daggers into my eyes.
“Never call me that, ever again,” She said, walking up the stairs to her and Ames’s shared dorm.
“Will do, sugarplum,” I said, my eyes following her movement, a proud smirk on full display.
“Gross,” Ames said under her breath as she followed Gracie. “That’s even more than I can take,”
As I lean back on my seat in triumph, I catch Theo’s disappointed gaze on me.
“What? Come on, it's fun,” I said in amusement.
“Making her life miserable?” He asked, raising his eyebrows.
“Precisely my friend,”
At that, Theo let out a deep breath and pushed his gaze to the ceiling above us.
“Jesus mate, what’s gotten your knickers in a twist?” I ask with a laugh.
“You know you really should cool down mate, being an asshole doesn’t make you cool,” He said , appearing to be bored with me.
“What the fuck are you on about,” I asked him, feeling insulted.
“I’m saying that maybe you should start acting like a decent human being and not be such a douche all the time,” He said, looking me straight in the eyes.
Oh so he wants to go?
Alright then.
“Oh and playing around with girls makes you such a decent human then?” I ask in retort to which he twists his face up in confusion.
“What the fuck do you mean?” He asks firmly, crossing his arms across his chest.
“Oh please mate, quit acting so high and mighty, we all know you’re trying to get into her pants by acting like such a good boy,”
He looks back at me with his eyebrows raised before letting out a scoff of disbelief before mouthing ‘wow’.
“Well I'm sorry, but excuse me for being a good friend Miles. She’s going through a hard time alright, you of all people should understand that. And if you’re so protective of her, maybe try treating her like an actual human for once and not like some roadside trash,” He said, before walking out of the room.
………………………………………………………
Gracie’s POV
“Hey, you ok?” Amelie asked slowly, reaching for my shoulder.
“Yeah, yeah I'm fine, he’s just annoying” I said with a small laugh.
“I mean what else is he right?” She asks, to which I laugh along with her.
After a few moments of silence, I decide to address the issue I've been having at the back of mind for the past few days.
“Hey, so, I've been meaning to ask-”
“Are you going to the party tomorrow?”
We both ask at the same time.
“Huh, oh yeah, yeah I am, you too?” I asked her, feeling a smile crawling onto my lips.
“Ugh duh? Free booze,” She said, deeming her comment to be self-explanatory.
“You know what, you’re so right, I'm ready to drink into the night,” I said with a wide smile which she reciprocated with a chuckle.
“So again, I just wanted to check up-”
“I have the perfect dress for you to wear,”
She interrupted me again before skipping over to her closet and taking out a small black dress.
Oh my fucking god.
That’s gorgeous.
When she turned around, she had her lips clamped in excitement and raised her eyebrows.
“So?” She asked, looking at me in expectation.
I switch my gaze from her to the dress and back to her again before letting out an incredulous chuckle.
“Holy shit,”
She looks at me in triumph before nodding to herself.
“Holy shit, indeed,”

Chapter 7~
Word count- 1.5k
Gracie’s POV
Waking up today, I never would’ve imagined that I would have enjoyed spending time with Miles. Maybe it was the shared burdens or the distressing future our parents have decided for us that were on the horizon that bonded us yesterday. Whatever it was, it was nice to know that even though we are completely unwilling to partake in their theatrics of playing match-ups, that we’d still have each other's back if worse came to worse.
It was yesterday that I fully realized that this whole ordeal had two sides. Sure I was being pressured, but he was too. And for some weird reason, I felt ashamed that I never took a moment to actually ask him how he was doing.
At the birthday dinner, on our ride here, last night….
“Hey, what’s on your mind?” Amelie asked from across me while buttoning up her shirt.
I pause my actions of brushing my hair to look at her reflection on the vanity mirror in front of me.
“Huh? Nothing, nothing, just thinking of today’s schedule,” I said, ending the lie in a tight lipped smile.
I heard her let out a deep sigh from beside me before walking the distance across to stand behind me.
“Gracie, I know you more than anyone, and I can tell when something is up. What’s going on?” she asked, turning me around by my shoulders so that I was facing her.
“My parents have asked me to visit on Sunday, I’m just really dreading it,” I said, with a chuckle.
It wasn’t the total truth but it wasn’t a lie either. The usual Sunday letter that I had gotten every single week since coming to Brookefield had been changed to an actual meeting this week. I had no idea why, but I knew that it wasn’t for anything good.
“Oh, I’m sure it isn’t anything too bad, and if something does happen, you can always escape and I'll come and drive ourselves away,” She said which coaxed a fit of giggles from both her and me.
“I’m so glad I have you here with me this year,” I said with a breathy laugh, suddenly feeling an immense feeling of gratitude towards my best friend.
“Of course, where else would I be?”
………………………………………………………
Miles’s POV
“So, did the plan work?” Theo said as he sat down next to me at the breakfast table.
I flipped the page of my book and kept reading, wanting to keep yesterday to myself.
It was much too embarrassing.
I mean really, Gracie, of all people. I hung out with Gracie and had a nice time. That shit is too embarrassing to disclose to Theo.
“I’m taking the silence as a yes?” He asks, as he loads a pile of eggs onto his plate.
Fuck you, Theo.
“Alright mate, let’s go,” He said with a breathy laugh, digging into his food.
Just as I take a deep breath to berate him about his snarky comments, I see the all too familiar flow of brown hair and the voice that had been slowly becoming pleasant to my ears from a distance.
She walks, holding onto her book bag tightly, her mouth wide in a bright grin, laughing at something Amelie had said.
As she rounds the corner to our table, her expression morphs into something unreadable as she pauses to look at me. I saw a soft smile tugging on the edges of her mouth as she looked down, a slight tint of rose on her cheeks as she pulled out a chair for her to sit on.
“Good morning,” Amelie said quite loudly, demanding attention, which succeeded in pulling me from my momentary trance.
“Good morning,” Theo said and I followed, stacking some pancakes onto my plate.
From the corner of my eyes, I see a silent exchange of expressions and eyebrow raises between Theo and Amelie before she cleared her throat obnoxiously.
“So,” she started, cutting into her sausages. “Where were you two love birds last night?”
My eyes widen at the unexpected comment and Gracie immediately chokes on her water, her whole face lighting up in a rose tinge.
“Wha- What are you talking about?” She asked with a rushed chuckle, her tone deeming Amelie's comment to be ludicrous.
“Oh I don’t know, the both of you were missing after dinner, and then went missing for the rest of the night as well, didn’t come until later, ooh- came at the same time too,” Theo started listing off before i hit him in the shins under the table,
The little traitor.
“We were just in the library,” Gracie said, rushing her sentence with a laugh. “Studying, right Miles?” She said, widening her eyes and tightening her lips in a smile, urging me to act along.
You underestimate me Gracie Abbott.
“Huh? Yeahh, sure- of course,” I said with a laugh. “We were…. studying,” I said, eyeing her down, feeling pride at the flustered flush on her face.
“Miles!,” She said, widening her eyes and leaning further towards the table in a warning.
“Aright, alright, y'all shagged no biggie, we all have our needs” Amelie said, munching into her toast.
I kicked theo in the shins once more when I heard him stifling a laugh.
“We did not- shag!,” We just-” Gracie said, trying hopelessly to bring back her dignity.
“We snuck out, happy?” I said, after taking a deep breath of annoyance.
Amelie nodded as if the comment was valid enough.
“And shagged of course,” I said, winking at Gracie before leaving the table with Theo.
“Miles!,”
………………………………………..
It was Sunday morning and I had many thoughts swarming my mind on the ride home. What possible could they be up to now? I mean, it surely wasn’t a simple ‘family brunch’ like my mother had told me, that I knew for sure.
When the car rounded the fountain to the entrance, I instinctively fixed my hair and tugged down on my dress. The valet worker opened my door for me and I took a deep breath, readying myself for what was to come.
“Morning mum!” I said, opening the door to the dining room to which I was met with ‘hello love’s and ‘morning Gracie’ from my parents. My father folded the newspaper he was reading when I took out a seat to sit on and looked at me with a warm smile.
“Ready to eat?” He said, his voice uncharacteristically high pitched. I squinted my eyes before replying “Sure-?” with a confused chuckle.
“Nice, we made pancakes, your favorite,” mom said from across the table with a face scrunch, stacking some on to my plate with a widened smile.
And while I do love seeing my parents all smiley and happy like this, it was very strange seeing them this enthusiastic about brunch.
“Alright what is it?” I ask, no longer able to hold in my skepticism, to which I was met with raised eyebrows of feigned confusion.
“Come on guys, I can read you like a book, what’s up?” I ask, taking a sip of my tea.
“Nothing honey, we just wanted to spend time with our daughter today,”
“Yeah something is definitely going on, should I be worried or something?” I said, being completely done with their theatrics.
They look at each other before letting out a collective sigh.
“We just wanted to talk about more options that have arisen,” mom says, crossing her hands on her lap.
“Mum, no. Please, I do not want to talk about this,” I let out a sigh of frustration.
“Darling you have to start taking this seriously,” She said, looking desperately at me.
“Why? I’m only 17 god damn it,”
“Language Gracie,” Dad says to which I scoff at him in annoyance.
“Fine then, what’s going on with Miles,” mum asks, trying to diffuse the tension.
“Nothing, why would anything ‘go on’ with him?” I reply, resting my cheek against my palm.
“Gracie, we talked about this, you need to make some progress before someone else gives them an offer,” she said, speaking in a stern tone.
“Well mum, maybe I don’t want to get married at all ok? Maybe, i just want to live my life the way I want, maybe I just want to date around and have fun and not stick to these stupid rules-”
“Enough, Gracie.” Dad finally spoke, his voice loud and firm.
“You’ll marry the boy, or we’ll pick someone for you,” He said, looking me dead in the eye which made me feel inferior, something he always did to shut me up.
“Are you trying to blackmail me right now, is that what's going on?” I say, scoffing and crossing my arms over my chest.
“We have dinner with them next friday, pick something nice to wear,” mum says, ignoring my accusation.
I felt the blood coursing through me, making me fist up my hands and words of rage were teetering over the edge of spilling out.
But prim and proper. That's what I always had to be, no matter what the situation was.
So I let my head down, accepting that this was a battle that I just could not win.
“Yes, mum,”

CHAPTER 2
Blank.
There’s nothing in my mind as I sit on this booth with this man I don’t know. How dare he interrupt my set? I know God is watching and probably asking where is this man’s manners.
“We’ve got things to discuss, Cassie Davis.”
I frown, “excuse me?”
He keeps a cocky smirk plastered on his face, “I think you’ll like what I have to tell you.”
“Can that wait until my set is over? You’re kinda interrupting me. You need to get off of this stage before-”
“I said, get off the stage!” Aiden appears behind the man, grabbing him by the arm as he lifts his arms in defense.
“My bad- hey, I’ll be over there when you’re done,” the man points to the booth.
I take a sip from my soda as I watch him chug on his beer. He smells good—spicy, woody, a bit sugary, but strong. Amusement dances in his eyes as he stares at me. I swing my feet under the able, considering I can’t really reach the floor.
“How old are you, Cassie Davis?” He leans back on his seat, eyeing me carefully.
I place down my soda, “I’m 20. How old are you?”
He nods, “alright. I’m 29. Is this the only place you work as a singer?”
I fiddle with my fingers on my lap, “as a singer, yes. I also work at the diner, but that’s because the tips are good. Mr. Bohn always pays me more because he says my aunt would never pay for my performance clothes,” I smile to myself, “he’s right. Sometimes-”
Damn. I’m talking too much. I timidly lift my eyes to look at him, who’s eyeing me in the same amused way as before.
I bet he thinks I’m stupid. But, I mean, only God can judge me.
“Sorry,” I clear my throat, “why the questions?”
He licks his lips, “you’re something else, Cassie Davis. I’ll give you that,” he takes a sip from his beer. Taking a deep breath, he says, “I recently moved into to town, and I’m planning on opening a casino. And every casino needs an entertainer…” He tilts his head to the side, eyes heavy as they assess me.
Oh?
“So, you want to hire me?”
His leather jacket squeaks as he leans forward on the table, placing his elbows above it, “if you’re up for it, I’d be happy to hire you.” He stares at me intently and it makes my chest do a weird thing.
I could use a little extra money if I ever want to move to Miami.
I lean myself forward, mimicking his position. “When can I start?”
His lips break into a beautiful, wide smile.
But when he opens his mouth to say something, he’s interrupted. “Everything alright over here?” Aiden asks, eyeing me and the man carefully. His black dress pants are a bit too tight and his hair messier than before — he probably fucked someone in the back room, again. God, please forgive him.
The man looks at him sideways, his smile never faltering. “Yeah, is everything alright over here, Cassie Davis?” He leans back, arms crossed over his chest.
I give Aiden a tight smile, “yeah, it’s all good.”
He glances at the man in front of me and then back at me. “Alright. Well, if you need me, I’m behind the bar counter.”
I nod, “okay.”
When Aiden walks away, the man lifts a brow. “Boyfriend?”
I immediately shake my head, “no, just a coworker.”
“Ah,” he sighs, looking back at Aiden who’s already behind the counter. “He totally wants to fuck you, though,” he says, glancing back at me with a matter-of-fact look.
“If you say so,” I shrug.
A glint of amusement crosses his eyes once again. “Alright, here’s the thing: I’m still bringing some stuff from Vegas to the store, so once I have everything up and running, I’ll give you a call, yeah?” He licks his lips, reaching for his back pocket to grab his phone. “What’s your number?”
It’s my turn to lift a brow, “how do I know you’re not lying?”
His eyes start to crinkle in the corners, and then he laughs. A light-hearted, breathy laugh—my skin tingles.
“You think I’d do all this for a chick?” He says like it’s the most absurd thing he’s ever heard. “I mean, don’t get me wrong, you’re a sight for sore eyes. But you’re too young for me and not really my type, so get your head out of it, yeah? This is business.”
I lift a brow, “okay.” I offer him my hand and he smirks, placing his phone on it. I add myself as a contact on his contact list, and hand it back to him.
“Thanks, Cassie Davis,” he puts his phone back on his back pocket. “Guess I’ll be seeing you around,” he says, lifting himself up from his seat.
“Wait!” I blurt out and he stops in front of me, standing. “You never told me your name.”
He smirks widely, “I’m Cole Hayes.”

Chapter 6~
Gracie’s POV
“It’s not going to work” Miles taunted me from a few spaces behind me. I stopped my hopeless actions of trying to open the door to rake my hair backward, trying to calm myself down instead. I went up to him once more.
“Do you have your phone with you?” I ask, already knowing what his answer would be. He replies so with his expression, silently telling me ‘If I did, I would’ve used it already’. I move away from him in frustration and back myself into a wall, leaning against it.
“Mine’s dead,” I said in defeat as I slid down the wall to sit on the floor.
“I figured,” he said with a slight nod as he joined me.
He let his head fall back against the wall to stare at the ceiling as I brought my knees to my chest. After a few moments of pin-drop silence, the man starts to whistle.
To whistle.
He stops immediately when I give him a death stare.
“Jesus, someone’s in a bad mood,” he said under his breath with a roll of his eyes.
“Yeah, no shit Sherlock, I’m stuck here all night. With you.” I said and he pulled a smirk, tinted with immaturity. I roll my eyes, disappointed in myself for using those words and not seeing them through.
“What’s so wrong with spending time with me huh? We never get to do that, just you and me,” he said with an annoying smile.
“Yeah, I wonder why,” I say playing with the loose threads of the carpet we were sitting at, trying to avoid the reluctant grin that was tugging at my lips.
“Hmm, I do too,” he says and makes a dramatic pause, to which we both fall into a fit of laughter shortly. As the laughter calmed down, I felt more comfortable in his presence.
After a few moments of comfortable silence, he stood up slowly and let out a groan as he stretched his hands above his head. When met with my questioning stare that silently asked him ‘what are you doing?’ he smirked and offered me his hand to take.
“You don’t seriously believe that I don’t know a way out do you?” he said as I slowly reached for his hand and stood up, still very much confused by his vague words.
“What do you mean?” I asked with squinted eyes.
“There’s a window that’s always left unlocked, the third one from the left,” He said with a cocky smile as he pocketed his hands.
“How the hell do you know that?” I asked skeptically.
“Let’s just say that I use this place to….. getaway once in a while,” He replied with a sly smirk.
Gross.
“Ew, I did not need to know that Miles,” I said as I scrunched up my face in disgust.
He shrugged in feigned confusion and widened his eyes as if he had no idea what I was insinuating. I let out a soft chuckle at his antics and unbeknownst to me he let a soft and gentle smile grown un his face.
When I looked back at him, I noticed how the lamp lights lit up his whole face, illuminating it in a soft glow.
He has pretty eyes.
What followed was a few moments of staring. But not the usual playful or snarky staring. No, this time all I saw in his eyes were honesty. I saw the true him I made friends with all those years ago, and for some reason, I was comforted that that version was still inside of him.
“Alright sneak, lead the way,” I said with an amused smile and he gasped in fake shock.
“That is not an acceptable nickname, there are so many better ones,” He said as he walked backward with a highly amused smile.
“Oh yeah? And what are they?”
“Lover boy, future husband to be, the father of your future child,” He said with a wide teasing smile, mocking the various names he knew my family have used to address him in various conversations.
“Jesus fucking Christ, they really are delusional aren’t they?” I said as I looked to the side, hoping to cover up the embarrassment and the blush that was creeping onto my neck.
He let out a small laugh as he reached for the window on his right.
“It’s funny,” he said and paused as he took a moment to jerk the window knob outward. “How delusional they are,” he said, ending his statement. When he did, he looked straight into my eyes and the intensity of it made my whole body freeze over.
Focus Gracie.
I let out an awkward chuckle that came out more like a croak and quickly cleared my throat, hoping to diffuse the unprecedented tension that had been built up.
“That done yet?” I asked as I nodded over to the window. He too broke out of his trance-like state to respond to my question.
“Huh, oh yeah, let me just-“ He said as he shimmied the window a little, it easily opening after a few tries.
“After you wifey,” he said with a teasing glint in his eyes to which I responded with a light hearted scoff. I managed to jump over the window into the soft grass below, barely gracefully and Miles landed next to me a few seconds later.
“Thank you, hubby,” I said, agreeing to take part in the little spectacle.
He dropped his head back in laughter which coaxed one out of me as well. When the laughter died down, his eyes widened in an expression I knew all too well.
“You know what we should do?” He asked, his golden retriever energy shining through.
“Absolutely not,”
“Oh, come one, no one’s going to know,”
“You know, Theo and Ames must be really worries, do you really want that to continue?”
“Come one Gracie, you’re no fun,” He said which finally got a rise from me.
“Hey, I can be fun,” I said as I jutted my jaw, hoping that my ‘fun-ness’ appeared as something that was very nonchalant.
“Sure,” he said with a bored expression and I sighed in defeat.
“Fine, but we come back in an hour,” I said.
“Deal,” he said as he took my hand in his lightly, his touch making tiny butterflies float in my stomach.
“Let’s go,”
…………………………………………………
Miles’s POV
After about 20 minutes of having to skillfully steal Mr. Crawford’s car keys, breaking into the garage and listening to Gracie’s various comments of distaste to what we were doing, I finally managed to start up our poor headmaster’s car.
“We really shouldn’t be doing this,” I heard Gracie mutter under her breath.
“Relax, my family is friends with him, he wouldn’t dare to point a finger at us,”
“Us? This is all you Miles,” She said as she looked at me with a worried expression.
“Shut up will you, I’m trying to drive,”
“You’re going to get me killed one day Miles Connor,”
Ditto, Gracie Abbott, I thought as I pulled the car out of school.
20 minutes later, after a short stop at the corner store, we found ourselves sitting in the hood of the car, snacking on a bag of crisps and drinking two large cups of soda.
“ahhh,” I heard Gracie say from beside me which brought an amused smile onto my face.
“I can’t remember the last time I ate like this,” she said as she took another sip of the soda.
“What do you mean?” I said with a chuckle as I reached into the bag of crisps.
“I’m not really allowed to eat anything that’s not ‘farm grown’ or ‘organic’. It’s all bullshit honestly.” She said with a sigh.
Usually anything she says is just something I use to bounce off a snarky comment but the vulnerability and the hidden sorrow of what she said made myself stop and listen instead.
“I mean, it wasn’t like this all the time you know?” She said, trying to cover up for her family.
“but ever since I turned 16 all I hear from them is ‘you’re of age now Gracie,’ or ‘You should really control what you eat Gracie,’ or ‘You should stand straight Gracie-‘ Like damn, let me breathe for a second,” She ended her statement by aggressively pulling out her hand from the crisp bag, downing several of them in one go.
I laughed out loud at the very un-Gracie- likeness of the action and she chuckled in response.
“Well, if you think about it, these potatoes were farm grown right? So technically, you’re not doing anything wrong,” I said, hoping to humour her alleviate some of her burdens, even if it was just for a little while.
You’ve gone soft Miles. I thought to myself.
“I guess you’re right,” She said in agreement.
“Oh, you’re dating someone right?” She asked after a few moments of comfortable silence.
I looked at her with my brows furrowed, thoroughly confused.
She rolled her eyes at me when I remained so for a couple of seconds.
“Breanna? I thought you were dating her,” she said, sipping on her drink afterwards.
Oh, OH.
“Why? You jealous?” I asked her, the familiar teasing and playfulness taking over me once more.
“Please, I feel sorry for the poor girl if anything,” she said in retort.
I laugh softly and take a sip of my drink.
“No, I’m not dating her,” I said, leaning back to lean against the backseat.
“Not dating her now- or?”
“I was never dating her in the first place Gracie,” I said as I looked straight at her.
“But you two were-“
“It’s to keep them from getting involved in my business,” I said, answering the questions that were coming in advance.
“What do you mean?” She asked, slowly staring at me.
I scoffed in amusement, as I leaned forward once more, leaning my face slightly closer towards her’s.
“The same reason that you hate me,” I said.
“The more I make myself look like a hopeless case, the more chance there is that our parents let go of their stupid expectations,” I said looking straight at her. She gulped and turned away from my gaze, opting to look forward.
“That’s quite stupid,”
“Well it worked on you didn’t it?” I ask her to which she responded with furrowed eyebrows.
“I didn’t know that,” she said in a quiet whisper after a few moments, looking straight ahead.
“There’s a lot of things you don’t know about me Gracie,” I said, looking forward as well. From the corner of my eye, I swore her stealing a quick glance at me before looking down at her lap.
“You do know that they won’t stop trying right?” She asked after a few moments of silence. Her voice barely above a whisper.
“I know,” I said. “But we can still dream right?”
She smiled at her lap and turned to meet my stare that was now on her face.
“Of course we can,”
I didn’t realize it then but only on the silent yet comfortable drive back to school did I realize that Gracie was the my most important friend. I would never meet someone so open and true, filled with passion and everlasting kindness for everyone, despite living in such a crazy world.
Someone who I could relate to and someone who would recognize me and all my burdens,
Someone who would always be there for me no matter what.
That drive put a lot of things into perspective.
And the smile she gave me as she closed her dorm door just before whispering a soft ‘good night’ solidified the fact that she too was ready for us to start this whole thing anew.

Chapter 5~
Miles’s POV
I’m going crazy.
Gracie Abbott what have you done with me?
The day after we got kicked out of their room was… interesting to say the least.
At breakfast she was whispering and muttering something profusely to Ames but immediately stopped when Theo and I arrived at the hall.
The usually snarky comments and glares were no more at literature which was unfortunate because that was the only thing getting me through class.
The worst of everything was how I got zero reactions every time I made a playful comment about her. I used to revel at her red face and deep calming breaths but today all I got was indifference. If anything, she seemed to avoid me.
“And that my friend is how my masterplan will end,” I said as I crossed my hands behind my head and leaned back on my seat.
“That’s a terrible plan,” Theo said in a monotonous pitch as he flipped another page of his book.
“Oh come on, it’s a great plan,” I said, feeling defensive of my brilliant plot.
“Aren’t you dating that girl- Breanna?” Theo said, finally looking up to look me dead in the eye.
“Yeah no, that didn’t work out, busy schedule”
“Your excuses are getting lamer by the day,” Theo replied, going back to reading.
What the fuck-
“What the hell’s that supposed to mean?” I said, feeling very confused and in the dark.
Theo looked at me, this time in annoyance and it made me furrow my eyebrows as I waited for an answer expectantly.
He simply sighed before flipping another page.
“Gracie?”
My face screwed up even further in confusion at the random throw of her name into our conversation.
“What has Gracie got to do with any-”
The realization set in mid sentence and it made me want to barf my intestines out.
“You know what Theo? Your humor has gotten stronger, kudos,”
At the lack of response I felt the need to defend myself, even when knowing very well that I do not have a reason to.
“Are you kidding me? Gracie?”
“Theo, do you hear the words coming out of your mouth? You sound insane, that's what you sound like,” I nod to reaffirm what I said to myself.
“I would never ever in a million years find someone like Gracie worthy of cutting off my relationships for, and besides, have you seen how she looks? Like, have you really seen how-”
I was cut off mid-sentence when I looked at the open hallway surrounding the courtyard during my spiel. There she was, the very topic of our conversation, holding her books to her chest as she walked backward, throwing her head back in laughter at something that Amelie said.
I felt my eyes following her path and my lips morph into a barely-there smile.
Happiness looks good on her.
But of course, Theo likes to ruin moments so he snapped his fingers in front of my face, succeeding in getting me out of my trance-like state.
When I looked back at him, he was wearing a cocky smirk on his face.
He’s been hanging out with Ames too much.
“Shut up,” I said, shoving my books into my bag.
“Listen, mate, I’m just saying-”
“Don’t,” I said, getting up from my seat.
“You still carrying out your plan?” He said with a small chuckle as he went back to his reading.
Oh, you cocky mother fucker.
“Yes, as a matter of fact, I am,” I said firmly to which he replied with a thumbs up, still reading his book.
“Good luck mate,” he said with a soft laugh as I walked away.
I flipped him off hoping he was still paying attention, a small smile of amusement slowly creeping onto my face.
…………………………………………………………
Gracie’s POV
“No, Camille, I don't see it,” I said after letting out a deep calming breath.
“Oh but I do, everyone does,” She said and pointed to ‘everyone’ that consisted of the girls in our class who had gotten some ludicrous information about what Miles was doing in our dorm yesterday.
“But he seems so infatuated with you Gracie, and you looked so cute today, trying to avoid him, didn’t she?” She asked looking around once again, everyone following through by nodding their heads in agreement.
“Please, as if he and I cou-”
“Just tell us what you two did, it isn’t that big of a deal,” Camille said, leaning on her arms that were on my desk.
“We did nothi-”
“Jesus Christ, he spent the night over ok? He does that sometimes. There, are you happy now?” Amelie said with a roll of her eyes, finally breaking from her silence beside me, making everyone get into pairs and groups as they giggled and whispered.
“Ames!,” I said in pure shock as I tried desperately to retract their ideas from what Amelie said.
“W- we did not-do… anything-,” I said hoping to diffuse the rumors I can already imagine getting out of hand.
But alas, it only led them to get more excited with their whispers and giggles as they left the table, ganging up with other pairs and gossiping profusely.
I could only stare at them in fear while Ames let out an amused chuckle beside me.
I turned my head slowly to glare at her as she showed a full-blown grin. I tilted my head in accusation and she followed with a shrug.
“ Hey you wanted them gone, I got the job done,” She said as she crossed her legs and arms in her seat.
I showed her a sarcastic smile in return.
“Sure hun, of course, you did, and made them think I slept with him too!” I said with a sarcastically cheerful smile that dug daggers into her eyes.
Her smile slowly disappeared as the realization set in.
“Oh fuck-” she said in a whisper and I nodded while shoving my books into my bag.
“Mhm, mhm, oh fuck indeed,”
“Where are you going?” She said as she followed my movements.
“The library, I was hoping to get some shit done there anyway, it’s also somewhere he will never be, which is good it would be too much if someone saw the two of us even crossing paths today,” I said as I swung my tote bag over my shoulder.
“Oh, do you want me to do something while you’re gone?” Amelie said, slowly getting up from her seat, looking regretful.
“Yes, make sure to shut up any rumors, and please make sure Miles does not hear anything,” I said to which she raised her hand in salute.
“Yes ma’am,” She said in an attempt to get me to smile which she succeeded in.
“Thanks, love,” I said as I placed my hand on her shoulder and left a small kiss on her cheek.
Ames looked back at me, flustered, muttering a soft ‘no problem’ before rushing out of the room.
Weird.
…………………………………………………………………
It had been about three hours since I had become well settled into my work when I heard the loud boisterous presence I had been dreading to hear all day, making my senses heighten.
I looked up from my assignment research and let my eyes roam around, hoping that my worst nightmare wasn’t coming true.
But remember? God hates me.
Because when I turned my head to look at the library corridor, there he was. Miles, in all his annoying glory.
What the heck is he doing in the library?
“What are you doing here?” I asked in a hushed shout, leaning forward so that he clearly heard me.
He looked around with a smile as he picked up a random book from the cupboard beside him.
“Studying,” He said, waving the book as if it was the most obvious thing ever.
I felt my face heat up in frustration before I took a deep breath to calm myself.
“Ah, the lady finally wakes from her slumber,” He said as he walked over to my once peaceful spot before dragging a chair out and sitting on it, backward.
“You've been very un-Gracie-like today,” He said pointing at me in reply to my face that was scrunched up in confusion to his previous comment.
“I don’t know what you are talking about,” I said quietly as I went back to highlighting my research.
“Why is your face so red?” He said, tapping on the table obnoxiously loudly and I could just hear the smirk in his voice.
“My face is not red,” I said, trying to subtly cover my blushing face with my hair because it was indeed, quite red.
“Whatever you say, Gracie,” He said as started to tap on the table with his other hand as well, finally getting a rise out of me.
“That’s it I’m leaving,” I said, packing up my things.
“Oh but why? This is so much fun, just you and me hanging out,” He said with an awfully cheerful smile, turning around in his seat, his eyes following my walk out of the hall.
I stopped in my tracks, ready to throw some snarky comment but stopped, letting out my signature calming breath instead.
“I’m tired,” I said as I continued to walk towards the door.
Unfortunately, Miles is dumb so he didn’t get the hint asking him to leave me alone, instead opting to follow me out.
“Milady, “ He said as he did a stupid bow and placed his hand on the doorknob, turning it around.
I watched as he struggled to open the door, jerking it back and forth.
Jesus Christ, what a baby.
I let out a frustrated sigh and shoved his hands away.
“It’s just a fucking door you dumb baby,” I said as I jerked the door backward, almost falling back at it not opening.
“Dumb baby huh?” Miles asked from beside me, crossing his hands across his chest as my panic started to creep in.
“Jesus Gracie, you shouldn't commit too soon to your snarky remarks if you don’t-”
“What’s the time?” I said as I quickly turned to face him.
“Huh?” He replied, caught off guard by my interjection.
I muttered a ‘Jesus’ before gripping his hand and turning it around, looking at the time on his watch.
Maybe it was my nerves trying to comfort me but his mouth immediately shut and I could hear him gulp at my actions.
“What is it?” He asked, his voice quite a few decibels down than normal.
“It’s 11:05,” I said, slowly letting go of his hand.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“The library closes at 11:00,” I said equally as quietly.
“Holy fuck,”

Chapter 04~
Gracie’s POV
“Swear each night to let her go,
Then love her more by dawn.”
Why in the world was he staring at me like that?
“Hey, you ok?”
“Huh?” I said as I turned around to look at Theo. “What’s up?”
“I don’t know, you look a bit distant today. And you’ve been mixing the soil for like 10 minutes now” He said with a humorous chuckle.
I laughed as I took my small shovel to dig a hole in said soil.
“I don’t know, i guess i’ve been feeling a bit off today” i said as I gave him a smile, hoping he wouldn’t ask any more questions.
But of course Theo being the gentle soul he is, didn’t get the memo.
“Come one Gracie, I’ve known you long enough to know when something is wrong. What’s going on?” He said, leaning on his side against the table.
I release a deep sigh, knowing that if I could trust anyone with anything, it would be Theo.
“It’s Miles,”
“Oh, what did he do to you?” He said as his gentle features morphed into one of distress.
“Oh no, no, he didn’t do anything, I mean he did do something, but it’s nothing like that,” I rambled on and I heard a soft chuckle leave his mouth to which i looked at him in confusion.
“What’s so funny?” I ask him while crossing my hands over my chest.
“Nothing, nothing” he said as he raised his arms in feigned surrender.
“What is it?” I said with a laugh as I lightly hit him on his shoulder.
“Hey that was uncalled for”
“No, Theo you don’t understand. He is so unbearable in class, like- the man doesn’t even pay attention but somehow knows everything there is to know and it’s so-” I stopped when I heard him laugh again.
“Jesus Christ Theo, this is serious” I say, fighting to keep my own laugh at bay.
“Damn gracie i knew you were dumb when it came to these things but the bar is so much lower than I thought it was.” Going back to tending to his plant.
He’s been hanging out with Ames too much.
“And what’s that supposed to mean?” I said with squinted eyes.
“It means-” He turned back to lean his side against the table again. “-that the both of you are very stupid when it comes to how you feel about each other,” he said as he looked straight at me.
My cheeks went warm and red at his words.
I quickly turn back around to my plant in a measure to hide my blush.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about” I said, as firm as possible.
“Sure Gracie, whatever you say” I could practically hear the smirk on his face.
He’s definitely been hanging out with Ames too much.
“You know what Theo?” I said as I turned back again to look at him, determination coursing through my body.
He simply raises his eyebrows, daring me to go on.
I turn back around, finding it too hard to appear firm while blushing profusely.
“I do not like Miles,ok? He is an arrogant asshole who is too full of himself. And besides he’s a player so I know for a fact that even if there was something between us, he'd get bored of me in five days. I only like nice guys who know how to treat me right. And is he nice to me? No. Sometimes.... maybe- No, NO. He’s not. So why would I even bother trying to start something between us if he isn’t even that nice of a guy.”
When I end my whole spiel, theo ruffles the top of my head before walking behind me towards the water cans.
“Whatever you say Gracie,” he said with a wide, snarky smile.
……………………………………………
“Thank god, we can finally have some peace and quiet now,” Amelie said as she closed our dorm door and walked over to sit next to my bed.
As per tradition, our friend group decided to hang out at our dorm and sleep over.
With the inclusion of beer of course.
The boys snuck out to go to town and bring over a six pack. They’ve always been the sneakier ones of the four,
I smiled at Amelie in agreement, finally getting the chance to chat with my best friend after a long and tiring day.
“So… any cute girls in class?” I asked, partially in interest but mostly just to start up a conversation.
“Uhm, not that much to be honest- ooh, Eve is in my class this year!” Amelie said as she grasped onto my hands and lit up her eyes.
Eve has been one of mine and Amelie’s mutual crushes, ever since we entered sixth grade. Well, actually it was mostly Ames that was obsessed with her, making secret code names and always finding excuses to go to her class to see her. I found it to be too cute that someone could make her act that way.
“Oh my god! Ames, you have to do something about it this year because if not i swear to fucking god-” I started to rant before she interrupted me.
“I don’t think i like her that much anymore,” she said with a bashful smile.
Oh my god.
“Wait, so- new crush?” I asked as i swooped my face down to try and meet her bashful gaze. She meekly nodded and I went ballistic.
“You have to tell me Ames, who is it?” I asked her excitedly. At that her expression immediately soured and her face became distant.
“That’s none of your business,” She said, quietly.
“I just wanted to know who-”
“It doesn’t matter, ok?, Let’s just talk about something else” She said as she slowly slid her hands out of mine.
I knew something was on her mind but I didn't want to force it out of her, so I complied.
“Well, Miles was unbearable today, we had literature and well, first off he came to class late, guess why?” I asked her, raising my eyebrows.
She chuckled softly in entertainment and shrugged.
“Breanna”
“Oh ewww, this soon?” she asked with a disgusted expression on her face.
“That’s exactly what I was thinking,” I said as I tucked my legs in a criss-cross position, ready to spill the gossip about today’s antics.
And soon, we were back to being the typical Ames and Gracie, Complaining about Miles, gushing about how hot the girls have gotten over the summer and how kind some of the guys in our grade were and how bitter sweet yet excited we were for our final school year.
“Oh, something weird happened in botany today,” I said, starting up a new topic of conversation.
Ames’s face quickly turned to me in interest and a slight bit of annoyance, probably already knowing who and what I was going to talk about for the umpteenth time this evening.
“With Theo?” She asked, playing with her fingers.
“Yeah, he just said something- weird, I guess,” I said.
“He said that in his opinion, that Miles- likes me?” I said as I twisted up my face in slight disgust as i remembered the way he spoke those words.
“I mean he’s wrong right? Like there is no way that he, Miles, of all people would like me right? Like that’s just absurd-” I look over to find Ames not even paying an ounce of attention.
“Ames,”
“Ames, are you even listening?” I said to which she suddenly looked at me.
“Huh, sorry it’s just- i've heard too much Miles today and just-” she said as she shook her head in dismissal to which i scoffed.
“I’m always there for you when you have issues, the least you could do is pay attention to me when I do,” I said in slight annoyance.
“Well it’s a bit hard to when all you ever talk about is him, Jesus gracie, it’s like he’s become your entire life-”
“What the fuck do you mean by that?”
“Oh I don’t know, maybe I mean that you’re alway-”
“Woah, isn’t it a bit rude that you two started the fun without us” Miles suddenly walks in waving the six pack in front of his face.
Oh lord.
“I want to see some girl on girl action,” He said as he winked at me.
Kill me. kill me now.
“Miles let’s not please,” Theo said, closing the door behind him as he entered our dorm.
“Alright, who’s ready to get wasted?”
…………………………………………………………………….
“Ok smash or pass” Ames said as she adjusted her legs tucked underneath her.
“Headmaster Crawford,” She said before taking a large swig off her bottle.
“I’ll have to pass, too old for me” Miles said as Theo nodded in agreement.
“Yeah me too, I mean the man’s nice and all but I’ll pass” drinking a small sip from his bottle.
“Definitely Smash,” I said, nodding to myself as I took a sip of beer as we. When I was met with silence I looked up at them and laughed at their expressions.
“What? He’s hot” I said, still laughing as their faces morphed into an expression of disgust.
“You’re done,” Theo said as he took the glass bottle from my hand and walked over to the mini fridge across our dorm, leaving his previous position that was between Miles and me.
“Hey, he is hot, I'm serious,” I said, still giggling, partially due to their reactions but mostly because of the alcohol.
“No honey, you’re drunk,” Amelie said as she too got up to join Theo at the mini fridge in search of something to snack on.
It was just me and me and Miles on the floor now. There was still some residual tension- or,whatever it was from this morning but the beer had seemed to wash it away for both of us.
“Ok Gracie, what about me huh? Smash or pass?” Miles asked quietly with a cocky smile.
“Oh pass, 100%” I said almost immediately, reveling at how his face soured just as instantaneously.
He scoffed before moving a bit closer.
“So you’re telling me that you’d fuck that old man but not me” He said with an amused smile.
“Miles,” I stared straight at him. “even if it was a choice between you and a fucking gremlin, I’d choose the gremlin any day,” I said, challenging him with a snarky smile of my own.
“Alright, ok, I see how it is, it seems to me that the Miles charms have zero effect on you,”
“You're correct for once, yeah,” I said, smirking at him.
He simply stared back at me with a gentle expression of his own.
“God,” I said as I let out a deep sigh.
“What’s taking you two so long?” I said, addressing Theo and Ames in impatience as I quickly stood up from where I was sitting.
Now you see, that would have been fine if it had been a normal day.
But it wasn’t a normal day today now was it?
Because today was a day that God hated me and I reciprocated that hate.
Because just as I stood up, The alcohol did its job and made me lose balance.
And I tripped.
And fell.
Did I mention that God hated me?
Because when I finally regained my balance, I noticed how his hands were holding onto me.
And when he looked at me and his mouth moved to form words, I couldn’t hear anything.
I was only consumed by the scent of his perfume; musk with a hint of vanilla.
I didn’t even know his eyes were that shade of brown.
And before I knew it i was staring at his lips.
Wake up Gracie.
And that’s when I regained my sanity and swiftly moved away from him. He quickly removed his hands from their hold onto me and rubbed the back of his neck with one; his nervous tick.
I drifted away a bit more in an attempt to hide my blushed up cheeks when he asked me, “Are you ok?” in the gentlest voice I had ever heard from him. I remained momentarily dazed by his behavior before I responded by nodding.
“Yeah I’m good, thank you- for that” I said, further confirming that I was fine when in reality it felt like a furnace was running throughout my body.
“You should be more careful,” He said, now swaying a bit to cover up the mess that was a few moments ago.
I simply nodded, still disgusted and a little confused by my train of thought that had occurred a few moments ago as well.
We just stood there for a minute or so before I started to feel a heavy stare from across the dorm.
“We should probably go to sleep now,” Ames said.
“Yeah you’re right, we should get some rest if we don’t want to wake up feeling like a mess tomorrow morning,” Theo said with a chuckle. “Can we sleep over here?” He asked, directing his question to Amelie.
“No, I think it’s better if you go to your room today,” Ames said in finality, still staring at me and Miles.
“Okay- Uhm, alright then, let’s go,” He said to Miles.
“Huh? Oh, oh yeah, let’s go” he said, breaking his stare to look at Theo before looking back at me again while pocketing his hands into his pajama bottoms.
“Good night Gracie,” he said with a nod before leaving the dorm.
“Night,”
“Goodnight, drink some water ok?” Theo said with a laugh as he waved goodbye to me and Amelie before following Miles out.
“Good night Theo,” I said with a smile.
And as I closed the door all I could think was about the musk, the vanilla, and how nice that brown looked on those eyes.
