I'm reading a double trilogy in another tab right now, I've been meaning to get around to it since 1985

I'm rereading the Vampire Chronicles including the Mayfairs, but I'm reading all of the them up to the turn of the century simultaneously so every revisited scene plays out in three or four perspectives overlapping

Here's a book I've been working my way through since 2003

Here are my 50 comfort books that I keep to hand in case I need to read that one bit again (the world had been old all along, very old, she had just never noticed before) (I cannot be the last, if they were all gone I would know)

Here's my pile of community cookbooks never tell me I don't need five recipes for the same cake from a town I've never been to

as a Regular Guy who happens to read ~300 books a year i feel the particular responsibility to refuse the bookfluencer industrial complex and remind people that identity as a reader is based solely on whether or not you happen to enjoy pleasure reading, not achieving some numerical goal or having the hottest take

It's true though! Children NEED scary stories, they need the emotional calibration. It's like controlled burns in the forest, scare the shit out of them while you are right there to comfort them and help them put All That in perspective. Otherwise they're just out there rawdogging the grief and horror of mortal existence on their own.

the biggest loss of animated movies trending towards sympathetic villains/no villains is that we dont get enough crazy death scenes anymore. stuff like tarzan's villain accidentally hanging himself or help i'm a fish's villain drowning and floating away silently on screen. sometimes your movies just need stuff to scare 8 year olds shitless. its good for the enviroment i think. probably.
