Indian Cinema Questions
What I already know
What do you believe to be the difference between the traditional Bollywood filmmaking style and the Masala film style?
The traditional Bollywood filmmaking style usually follows a cookie cutter story line, with romance, big musical scenes, and lots a bright colour. Whereas the Masala film style is more modern, mashing together more than one style, encompassing more genres into a single film.
What similarities do these styles of Indian filmmaking have in common with the hegemonic Western style of filmmaking?
The hegemonic Western style and Indian styles of filmmaking are similar in the way they focus in on a love interest and romance, this is clearly present in both.
What differences do they have?
India styles of filmmaking tend to have use more bright colours and will throw in what we see to be completely random and quite comedic dance and song breaks with large musical scenes with many people a common occurrence in almost every genre. Whereas the only place in Western style films you will see musical scenes is in the musical genre, with Western films focusing more on realism which is probably why the large dance and song numbers in Indian film seem so strange to us, because we are used to a sense of realism and people just randomly breaking into song is not something we see much in film unless we have sought it out in a musical genre film.
What are some of the key cultural, political and social factors as to why they may be different?
Culturally, India has a more particular culture and this is still very heavily present in their daily lives. Contrasting India and the Western World, India has a large amount of religions, causing political angst between the religions, whereas in western culture, the most common religion and in some countries, the only ‘acceptable’ religion is Christianity. And like in every country, what is socially acceptable is different and is heavily based on the main religion and culture within the country.
Where and how do the similarities exist? (Influences & cultural similarities etc.)
The similarities exist in the prioritising of romance. In both cultures romantic relationships are seen as a necessity and an important part of life.
What are some key aspects of story, plot and character development in Indian films?
Indian films are generally very long (1.5 – 2 hours), meaning there is lots of times for the story to take time moving along, or to have, plot and story wise, what a Hollywood film would have broken up into multiple films.
How is music and sound used in Indian filmmaking?
In India film they use big musical numbers to move characters’ storylines along, it enables them to develop characters quickly and tell smaller parts of the story so the bigger picture (the plot) can move along easily.

Production Synthesis
Upon reflection of the final edit of my music video, I feel the editing was done well in most parts, even though I had to change my music video a fair amount from the original concept and ideas, the colour correcting I feel was done well and brought so much life to the music video. The lighting could have been improved in some points and at times the shots were shaky. The concept could have been clearer, and I feel in the end my music video didn’t have any narrative it was purely concept driven. At times my music video was difficult to make, and I had some difficulties I had to work through. The day before I was planning to shoot, my main actress had to drop out and couldn’t make it, a few days earlier a person who had said she would help me out with my shooting dropped out too. This meant I had to almost wing my filming on the day so I could work around the fact I had almost no help and one less actress. I overcame this by finding shots that I thought looked good and would fit into my video and still shooting whatever shots I had planned to that I still could. My music video has a beachy, skater sort of feel and is very much concept and theme driven. To achieve this, I used and shot footage that was mostly b-roll style to keep to the concept style of my music video.

Concept Statement
My music video was made for Billie Eilish, for her song, Ocean Eyes. This music video was intended to be both engaging and interesting throughout the progression of the video and as the music intensifies the music video will do the same.
This music video was intended for young adults, teenagers, people who are interested in the alternative pop sound of Billie Eilish or anyone who has fallen so deeply in love but been heartbroken, this video may also catch the attention of surfers as the large majority of the video will be set at a beach, with a male character who surfs. The music video was majority concept based with the lyrics matching what is seen on screen.

Animation Synthesis
What software did you choose and why?
For example: If it is easier to use then how is it compared to the others. Was it the best choice to help create your vision?
I chose to use premiere pro and photoshop because my computer doesn’t have a touchscreen and I didn’t think any other software options would work well with my idea.
What was your animation idea based on repetition? How did you formulate it and prepare? How well did you execute it?
My idea was to have a ballerina dance across the screen and the have that play in reverse. Then have the colours invert and have her dance across and back. Then have a spotlight on her doing the same thing as before. I used a video of a ballerina and take an image of her frame by frame make her black and white and opaque. I found an image of a spotlight which and stretch and contorted to follow the ballerina across the screen. The ballerina moves quite smoothly and the trail behind her works well, but the spotlight was a little jumpy because I couldn’t see the frame before like I could with the ballerina.
Describe the creative process of creating the animation. What worked, what didn’t? How did you overcome issues?
When creating my animation, I realised it wasn’t complex enough, so I added an audience that threw roses. My ballerina’s dancing worked well and her trail of slightly more opaque versions of herself trailing behind her look good. The spotlight was harder to animate and didn’t work as well because unlike the ballerina I couldn’t see the last frame I made. To overcome this issue I kept my last frame on one side of my screen so I could roughly see where the spotlight last was.
What do you think did you personally did well?
E.G. – Time Management, Pre Production Planning, choosing of software.
I think I chose a software that most easily and effectively portrays my vision. I believe my time management was good because I was most of the time ahead of the class so that I could go to music lessons as well.
What could you have improved?
E.G. – Time Management, technique, used different software
My planning could have been better because I later realised that my animation wasn’t complex enough.
On a scale from 1-10 how complex is your animation? Why?
I would say my animation is about a 7. This is because I use different layers and elements and at most points I have more than one thing moving at once.
Are you proud of the work you have produced? Explain why?
I am proud of some of it I believe my spotlight could have been better but I am very happy with my ballerina.

Animation Questions
The title of my animation is going to be Ghost Ballerina. My animation will have a deeper meaning of the effort and repetition that ballerinas put into a piece to make it perfect. The musicians also play the same parts of a piece over and over again until it is perfect and both the ballerina and musicians work together on the piece so they can be perfectly timed together as if they are one.
My animation fits within the theme because of the repetitive movements of the ballerina and the constant black and white and I will also add repetitive music/sounds.
The ballerina is going to dance across the screen a few times before she hopefully walks on and bows. I am going to take a video a ballerina dancing and move her frame by frame, take that image make it black and white change the opacity and do that over and over slowly moving her across.
Hopefully, a singular motif from a nutcracker piece or a typical piece of music from a ballet will play on repeat throughout her dance. The purpose of this will be to keep all aspects within the theme of repetition.

What Software and Why?
For my assessment, I’m going to use a photo-shop and premier pro to create my animation. I have chosen this because I am unable to access a touchscreen device and I don't want to have to learn to use a new software and possibly not using it because I don’t like it.
