eloise wished she had more time to take a drama class, or be a little bit more involved with music. however, with all of her extra-curriculars, it was hard for eloise to find time to enjoy a show. she had been walking through the hallway when she heard the other play on the piano, eloise stopping in her tracks. she leaned against the door frame, quietly listening as the other practiced their sheet music. eloise appreciated music, the beautiful melodies and the stories hidden behind the notes. it made her reminisce on her high school days and the few theater productions she was able to be involved in. eloise waved off his apology, softly shaking her head. "no, i'm sorry. i didn't mean to intrude your practice. i haven't been here long, no," she spoke. she wasn't sure exactly how to say that the music he played was beautiful, knowing he must've already known that.
Tumblr media
The Music Rooms. Sometime in the first week. [ OPEN STARTER ]
The ten most difficult songs to play on a piano. Hungarian Rhapsody N. 2, Liszt. Flight of the Bumblebee, Korsakov. Fantaisie Impromptu, Chopin. Piano Concerto N. 5, Beethoven. Moonlight Sonata (3rd Movement), Beethoven. Revolutionary Etude, Chopin. Etude Op. 25 No. 11 - Winter Wind, Chopin. Piano Concerto No. 21, Mozart. Grande Polonaise Brillante Opus 22, Chopin. "Heroic" Polonaise Opus 53, Chopin. Ambrose went over the songs once, twice, upwards of ten times. Over and over again. Hammering out the difficult details of each one until his head started pounding, and his fingers felt like they were going to fall off. But he had to make a good first impression on his instructors. He had to be the best in his classes. He didn't just think that because he was a perfectionist either. He had to be the best because if he didn't prove he could do this - music - while simultaneously making a career out of doing music he'd be nothing but a joke.
He was too deep in his head that his fingers tripped over the wrong keys, and the palms of his hands followed, flattening into a loud angry dissonant sound. He huffed a deep breath lifting his head and noticing someone else must have come into the room sometime in the past thirty minutes. He really did find it unsurprising that he'd really missed a whole person. "Sorry," Ambrose said. I promise I can do better. "Have you been in here long?"

part of eloise was glad she was no longer one of those freshman, running around campus, little to no clue where they were going or what they were doing. the other part of eloise was envious of their naivety. eloise didn't know what she would trade to go back to be that naive, where greer wasn't missing or g wasn't a probllem. eloise rushed to the elevator with the last box of her belongings from the car. luckily, she saved the lightest box for last. she stood on the other side of the elevator, her gaze going towards the other as they spoke. a light laugh emitted from her lips. "i can recall crazily running around when i was a freshman, but i don't think i was that clueless." truthfully, she had probably memorized the campus map months before her first day on campus. "it would not surprise me. after everything in the news, i would not be surprised that they were desperate to get students."
Tumblr media
with: open to all location: any of the dorm buildings! when: sometime in the first week back
There was a ding! and the elevator doors slid opening, revealing a cluster of excited, chattering freshmen… who were not exiting fast enough. "Move!" Heath barked, startling them right out. He sighed as he stepped onto the elevator, trying to maneuver the weight of the awkwardly packed box in his arms, an ugly lamp jutting out from the top of it, repeatedly knocking his chin. He'd learned his lesson. Never again would he offer to help a hot girl carry something up to her dorm, because, inevitably, he'd get stuck unloading her entire car. "Is everyone that clueless their first year?" he asked rhetorically, slumping sideways against the wall. "Or did the entry requirements for Ogden totally tank after everything last year?"

live in the moment, eloise tried to remind herself. a promise she had tried to make herself make for the new school year. let's see if that lasts. eloise had just came out the library, arms filled with books. she made her way through the quad, slightly struggling carrying the books. she had been passing by the other as they exclaimed about a cloud looking like kevin bacon. shaking her head, she replied, "no, i'm okay." shifting the books in her arms, her eyes went up to the clouds in the sky. "which one looks like kevin bacon?"
Tumblr media
open starter when: move-in week where: the quad
birdie was laid out, star-fish style, in the middle of the quad. their gaze was held to the sky, not caring that they were in others way. no they were on an important mission in their star-gazing. maybe this was one of their many traits that made it a good idea for them to not have been an orientation leader. "holy shit!" they sit up, finger pointing to the sky before looking over at the person who was unfortunately crossing their path. "you see that cloud right there? it looks exactly like kevin bacon." they beamed before realizing that the person seemed to be carrying something. "you good? you need help? i'm sure this kevin bacon cloud will hang around all day anyway."

eloise had no idea what she was doing, truthfully. the only thing that she had known her entire life was that she wanted to go to ogden. on top of being loved by everyone at home, eloise didn't know what it felt like to be jealous of something, or someone. until she got to college, she was living in a somewhat perfect world. she had her mom, she was beloved by her friends and other town members. the only thing that sucked back home was getting her heart broken after being with link crawford. without knowing it, eloise had vowed to herself that she would never feel that way again.
maybe part of that energy was replaced into jealousy about greer. she looked like she never gave anyone the chance to break her heart. it seemed like she didn't have to do anything in order to earn the respect and adoration from everyone around her. eloise, on the other hand, tried everything in her power for others to like her. she would help a neighbor in need, she was a stellar athlete and student in school. it was just her normal. but seeing someone who looked so effortless. it set a fire inside the young girl's heart.
a small smile flattered her lips, slowly nodding. "it's a madhouse out there. is it always like this?" it was definitely something that the girl hadn't experienced before. it was almost overwhelming, the different things that were happening all at once. it felt quiet inside that bathroom, like a breath of fresh air. even if the person she had walked in on had just finished crying. "do you want to talk about.. anything upsetting you? i'm sure it's not on your to-do list to be.. upset in a bathroom."
Tumblr media
it's okay if you're not okay. parker chuckled and nodded some in agreement, the phrase straight out of a guidance counselor pamphlet or canva-generated, inspirational instagram post. still, the reassurance was appreciated, as, clearly, the redhead was not okay. though, upon immediate reflection, the fact that it was eloise in front of her—rather than greer and jesse or nate and nat trying to fit in a quicky, the odds of either too high to fully confront mentally—was something to be thankful for. even if not the best early impression.
parker rolled her eyes, more at herself than anything, and pulled a hand towel from a nearby wrack. "yeah, especially at this school," she quipped, wiping her arms off before beginning to dab the towel under her eyes. her weight then shifted backwards, leaning against the counter as her eyes once again found the brunette's. there was a sort of power in being like, yeah, i'm upset, i'm owning it, right? something admirable? the redhead subconsciously weighed the pros and cons of that against trying to dismiss the very idea that she'd been crying in the first place. seeing as the latter would be quite the reach, she leaned into the first. "though, i don't imagine you're also standing in here so you don't scream out there."

her eyebrow raised as she shut the door behind ronan, softly shaking her head. “don’t get used to it, zeng.” eloise said with a soft laugh, closing the door behind him after he entered. she had been slowly getting into baking more this summer, playing around with recipes. brownies were just one of those that were on her list.
“i know,” eloise started to say. “my mom would have a fit if she knew you came down to portsmouth and wasted money on a hotel when there’s a spare bedroom here,” eloise repeated what her mom had told her before. she wasn't about to fight her mother. she still wasn’t sure why he had chose to come to portsmouth. but she figured she should try to enjoy the next few days. eloise walked down the hallway, stopping at their guest room. "if you want to get settled, i can meet you in the kitchen after? it's right down the hall to the right."
Tumblr media
he wasn't sure what to expect, impulsively suggesting that he comes to visit eloise in her hometown. for one thing, he certainly wasn't expecting to be invited to stay in their guest room, and actually hoping to get a hotel room or airbnb in case... well, in case eloise had a change of heart about the man after all. but here he was, standing outside the abernathy household — and for some reason, it wasn't like what he had pictured in his head at all.
the door opens, and before even speaking to eloise, the smell of freshly baked brownies hits him. immediately, he smiles at eloise. "did you bake brownies for me, abernathy?" he teases her as he walks in, his little carry on bag dragging behind him.
"— you know, i could have saved you the trouble and stayed at a nearby hotel or something. it's just a weekend."

eloise had been wandering around campus, finishing up the last few things before her mom would force her to go home. she had no idea where her head was at during this, like her thoughts were still trapped inside that building. eloise hid herself in the library, nose inside of a book, trying to find something that was normal when everything else had been so out of hand. hearing the other's voice, her eyes perked up from out of the book. she offered a small smile. "sure. i have a few i need to return, too," eloise spoke, gathering her things. she led anya to the return counter, placing the few books in her hand there.
Tumblr media
with: open where: library when: last day before break
"Sorry," Anya coughs, hand tapping lightly on the shoulder on the nearest person. They needed to do something, to do something normal, something mundane, in the hopes that it would make the world feel less... unstable. Right now, everything felt covered in soot. Like every time she closed their eyes, all they could see was the lick of the flames across the floor. And maybe returning your overdue library books couldn't quite drown that image out, but was it not worth the try? "Do you know where the return counter is? I've put off returning these for months and today is the last day before they start issuing fines."

under the cut is to take a look into eloise's summer and some wanted connections for the new semester !
Tumblr media
post - fire : eloise spent most of her time the first few weeks of summer settled in her home. naomi abernathy was incredibly freaked out to learn that her daughter suffered a few second to third degree burns on various parts of her body. wouldn’t allow her to do much outside of the house to make sure the burns healed properly. eloise spent most of this time catching up on her to be read list that had been piling up throughout the school year. she pretty much lived inside of her reading nook in her room.
june : celebrated her 21st birthday. did not get drunk or party. spent time learning how to cook some of her favorite recipes from childhood, grew a love for baking. experimented with different cupcake recipes - found a recipe for cookie dough cupcakes. found out that that was the best thing she had ever made.
july : for the first week of july, eloise vacationed in myrtle beach, south carolina where her love for swimming began. loved the ability to swim underwater and the relaxation that came from it.
mid-july : ronan zeng came to portsmouth, new hampshire. naomi abernathy forced housed him, not seeing a reason to spend money on a hotel when they had a perfectly fine guest room. eloise was nervous because she hadn’t really spoke about her family’s finances (it was never a topic of conversation) - she was mainly nervous that it wouldn’t be good enough for ronan. she’s not sure why she cared so much, especially since his constant flirting usually got on her nerves. decided to bake while he was visiting. took him to some of her favorite thrift stores, coffee shops, and other little shops around town. very wholesome.
august : eloise spent a week at the morrison’s hampton’s house. truthfully, eloise was just glad to get away from her hometown for a short week. she brought homemade brownies for their family. eloise spent the rest of summer break helping out around her hometown. her neighbors needed someone to house sit for awhile, looking after the cats and their plants. she visited with old friends, just tried to enjoy the rest of her summer before back on campus. spent a lot of time with her mom, making sure their garden was weeded and that the new flowers were thriving.
wanted connections!
so, idk how, idk when but i really want her to have some kind of existential crisis or a breakdown. maybe she could fall down from where she stands rn. starts partying a bit more, starts slacking off a bit more. maybe to the point where she's gonna lose her scholarship. idk. just something!!!!
i want to explore connections where she used them to try and get a higher level on the social ladder. this could be hookups, etc
would like to sort of explore getting into a relationship?? could end badly. she hasn't been in an actual relationship since link, so y'know.
maybe a hookup during the summer??

on top of her academics and sports, eloise spent time in her high school's theater department. she loved helping out, even if it was on tech or props. she played in the lead in some of the musicals leading up to her senior year. she was the stage manager for both fall and spring productions her senior year. she has a soft spot for theater and music.

character parallels.
rory gilmore (gilmore girls), heather duke (heathers), caroline forbes (the vampire diaries)
family.
naomi zhong-abernathy (jackie chung); 44 years old. single mom.
not much is known about naomi’s past. it’s not something that she would be open about, especially with her daughter. she has to put on a front, that she isn’t dealing with the demons of her past. as much as naomi loves her own family, she isn’t close to them, at all. as hard as she tried, naomi could never live up to her family’s expectations of settling down, getting married, and having a huge family of her own. it was something naomi never imagined for herself. and when she tried? he left before eloise was born. naomi realized that her and eloise would be better off on their own - living without expectations. or so she thought.
unknown father (colin ferguson): 48 years old. unknown.
naomi married eloise’s father when they were young - naomi was 23 years old while he was 27. he never really wanted to commit to having a family. so, with the first possible chance he got, he ran away from it all - leaving naomi and her child. naomi has never mentioned her father, and eloise has never dared to ask. it was an unspoken rule in their house. they had gone 20 years without him, why would they feel the need to bring it up, now? part of eloise always wishes she knew her dad. to know the other half of what could’ve been her life. however, she loves her relationship with her mom - it’s not something that she would give up for the chance to know her father.
character trope.
growing up in a small town with an adored mother, it was hard for eloise to not be loved by people she had never met before. her mother struggled financially in eloise's early years, going to her coworkers and neighbors to help take care of eloise. it was often that eloise would be taken into work with naomi abernathy, earning coo's and aw's from the town's population. eloise is the town sweetheart, the 'could do no wrong', the stellar student, the amazing athlete. she's the one you can count on to help you with your homework, the one you can count on to help an elderly lady cross the street, the one you can count on to always tell the truth.. right?
eloise.
it was almost always eloise and her mom. they were always with each other. to the store, to work, at basketball games, anywhere and everywhere. she was her mother's only child - her prized possession.
they had anything they could ever need within each other. it didn't matter that they weren't rich, or that they didn't have the nicest of materials. truthfully, eloise never really cared about diamonds or designer clothes. she was genuinely just herself - with thrifted clothes and a book in her hand. eloise was adored no matter what.
eloise felt like the world was sitting easily on her shoulders, that it revolved around her. it didn’t help that she was the star of several athletic teams, had top tier grades, and seemed to just glide right through high school.
she consistently needed to be right, to be liked, to be the best. something inside of her knew that she belonged at ogden. she didn’t need to go half-way across the country to go to school. she had all that she needed: a town that adored her, beaming college recommendations. what else could she need?
eloise received an athletic scholarship when she got into ogden. eloise probably would have been able to glide through ogden without the scholarship, but she knew her mom would be scrapping change in order to pay for it. with the scholarship, it was one last thing her mom had to pay for.
eloise hadn't been so self conscious until she arrived at ogden. with people who had more money than she could dream of, who had better style, better friends, better everything. she chose to hide away the parts about her that she had never thought of before. she would try to make her clothes look expensive, perfect posture, lies rolling off her tongue about how she grew up. little white lies couldn't hurt her. she has not openly admitted to receiving an athletic scholarship, but it's not exactly a secret either.
greer morrison.
meeting greer was the origin of her downfall. eloise had never met anyone like her - so much more adored and respected by all. eloise could only dream of what greer had. it filled eloise with a rage. she couldn't believe that someone could be so much more adored than her, and she wanted everything that greer had. she wanted to be as liked as her, as adored, as respected, as high on the social pyramid as her. it filled her thoughts, and soon, eloise was obsessing over what she could do to be more like her. the need to grow to the top, to soar above the rest. the desire to be liked by her, to be liked by the entire student body filled every ounce of her body. all eloise knew, from that point on, was that she would do anything and everything to be just like her. even joined in on tennis to try and get closer to greer. ended up enjoying tennis, but still.

eloise could see some of herself with naomi - the way she could barely stop talking when it's something she's passionate about. truthfully, she wished she could see more. how her mother was quick on her feet, spitting off words on her tongue as she kept with the conversation. most of all, eloise just felt like she lost a lot of herself within the last year. would she acknowledge and try to become herself, again, next year? indeterminate. maybe, just maybe, next school year. she would try.
eloise knew that not every student at ogden had a great relationship with their parents - it was something that she wished they could have, but not something she could help with. she cherished their relationship, knowing that it could be worse. she would rather be close to her one parent than not be close to two. eloise took the glass of champagne from him, following in his direction. she hadn't noticed she was quiet for a moment as she reminisced of her childhood growing up, a small little twinkle in her eye.
"it has always been my mom and i," eloise started, a soft smile playing along her lips. "which means we have always been close. we don't have much family by blood outside of ourselves. our neighbors, my mom's coworkers.. they've become like an extension to our family. i don't think i've ever thought twice about it - it has always just been this. there's not one place that my mom can go without making at least one friend." eloise wasn't sure why she was rambling little details of how she grew up. "how about you?" she questioned, an eyebrow perked as she looked at the other. "if you don't mind, that is. it must have been a bit different having siblings and everything."
Tumblr media
His eyes stay with Naomi for a second, even as she distances herself from their little circle, carefully watching as she gracefully blends into the crowd – a ghost of a smile still imprinted on his features in case she turns back on last time for a final goodbye.
That hint of a smile comes back to life when Eloise speaks again. He doesn’t know how aware she is of it – how much in common they actually have that she knows how he feels about her words, but validation is, to him, what a handful of candy is to a child on Halloween, and it feels like Eloise has just handed him a sack full of it. He turns to her, the side of his lips turned upwards gently still, “I’m happy she did. I really liked her too.” He says, blue eyes glinting with the utmost sincerity. “I can see where you get all the–“ He pauses for a second, looking for the right word, “–eloquence from.” Naomi was a great conversationalist, and if she hadn’t decided to mingle a bit more with the other parents, Edward was sure they would have spent the rest of the afternoon talking – which didn’t sound bad at all…
When a waiter passes, he takes two glasses of champagne and offers one to her. His free hand dives into his pocket as he guides them forward. “You too seem really close.” He points out with some neutrality, unsure of how she would take that, but their syntony and mutual admiration is undeniable. His relationship with his parents, on the other hand, is colder and more distant. Morrisons aren’t exactly known for being warm and sentimental… “Was it always like that growing up?” Must have been nice, he thinks.

eloise had been absent-minded - none of this felt real, like she was living inside some sort of scary movie in which she used to love. eloise wasn't sure exactly what she could do inside the empty gym. she wasn't sure if she was able to work out while still healing from the fire's events. she just wanted part of her daily routine back - everything had thrown her off of her routine that she desperately needed to have. so, she scrambled when the other asked her what she was looking for. "oh," she spoke softly. "i think i left my water bottle in there a few days ago." it was the only thing she could think of on the spot.
Tumblr media
she glanced down at the new message! notification on her phone with longing. "uh, it's closed. they're waxing the floors later." she sighed the universal long-suffering sigh of anyone who was about to be forced to do their job at work. "i guess i could go unlock it for you." she stood up with no small amount of effort (and a surreptitious sniff to see the effects of the forgotten deodorant). "what are we looking for?" she waved eloise along, excessively large ring of keys jangling in her hand.

who: @ronanzng
where: eloise's home in new hampshire
eloise wasn’t sure why she hadn’t stopped the idea of ronan visiting new hampshire for his travel plans. it wasn’t like she had always enjoyed the constant flirting. more so, eloise was mainly afraid of how the other would view her after visiting her home. it wasn't that eloise's family were incredibly rich. they lived comfortably in a two story home - enough space for eloise and her mom. it was nothing like she would see in the hampton's, or higher end living.
when eloise mentioned ronan’s plans to come here over the summer, naomi excitedly started cleaning their entire home, getting ready for a guest. that was one thing about naomi. she didn't have to know a person for years to make her home a home for them, as well. she would treat them as her own, making sure that they were comfortable. eloise loved that about her mom, but in this situation.. eloise was just nervous.
eloise had just finished plating a fresh batch of homemade brownies, her mom's peace offering for any (and all) situations when she heard the doorbell. naomi had insisted that ronan take the guest bedroom in their home. why waste money on a hotel when he can just stay here, eloise could her hear mom's voice in her thoughts. wiping her hands on a towel, she hung up the apron that she was wearing on a hook before finding herself to the door.
"hey, come on in," eloise spoke as she opened the door, moving out of the way for the other to walk in.

end.
Sam laughed, nudging Eloise with her elbow gently, as she shook her head. "You know, Tina Fey based that character off of me," she said, assured enough that it could be the truth for real. it wasn't, obviously. Sam was like … a baby when that movie came out. Maybe it'd be more accurate to say she'd based herself off of the character. She hadn't, but still more likely than the other way around. She downed the rest of her fruit juice and raised the glass as if toasting Eloise in agreement. "Me too. Hopefully they will. Maybe this was all just a this year thing. But I should probably go be social with other people," she said, regretfully. She'd rather just talk to her friends, but social events were for talking to as many people as you could - she guessed. "I'll see you later. We'll say bye before leaving for the summer, and get coffee or something," she promised, with a wave as she turned to head off through the crowd and make the rounds of being social.
