I don’t understand why so many fandoms freak out over what the media’s creator says in interviews or whatever. You know “word of god” doesn’t have to mean shit, right? You know you can just completely ignore it and do whatever you want, because words people say over the internet can’t actually control you, right? Do you think maybe somewhere in a deep deep corner of his mind and heart , Hiccup is actually somehow hurt by the continuing jokes about his leg like sometimes and when the mood is right it’s fine but when it’s constantly and it seems like that’s the only joke people around him know he’s actually kinda hurt and slightly dehumanized maybe?

I don’t agree with this. It definitely doesn’t seem like it’s the only joke people around him know. They’re definitely not doing it maliciously. Which, obviously, that does not excuse any hurt caused by this, but it doesn’t seem to really affect him all that much. And I’m saying this as someone who has been rolling around in the mess that is his psyche for about 10 years.

But I am also saying this as a disabled person. If someone I don’t really know, or someone I don’t know well, makes fun of one of my disabilities or illnesses? Well, uh, they can hit the curb. Definitely hurtful and unwanted. However, the people close to me, like my polycule, making jokes about that doesn’t hurt me. Most of the time I end up joining in and laughing. Because when it’s people that I know that love me unconditionally, it’s not a joke at my expense. They’re joking with me. (God knows I make so many jokes about my illnesses!)

And, well, Hiccup and the Dragon Riders do love each other. It would probably sting on occasion, I would say, but for the most part, it probably doesn’t. We definitely could have used more of Hiccup making the jokes himself or joining in on it, because I can see him doing that and that’s generally how that sort of thing goes.

Hiccup doesn’t seem to hold any bitterness towards his friends. Not sure why the people in my inbox do.
