“That’s very interesting. I never really got signatures, also if you buy something that needs one, all those machines seem to accept things, no matter what weird sort of scribble you give them.” Bridget made a small face, but gave a shrug.
“I could help you.” She whispered in response to Ember’s comment. “I mean, I’m further out of high school than you are – obviously – but I did graduate from college only a few years ago and while I did not properly study biology, I did take a number of science classes.” She neglected to mention just how much research she’d done as a child on dominant and recessive genes – while it hadn’t been in excess by any stretch, she had come upon them when researching Beatrice’s OCD, and retained more than just a little bit of a memory on them. Not than Ember’s being a phoenix was in the same sort of realm as Beatrice’s OCD, but it was something else to look more into. Genetics of the supernatural, beyond fae. She knew something about fae, even if only because of her connection with the stories – because she and her sister had read book after book about them as children.
“Well that sucks.” Bridget said simply. “But that doesn’t – that doesn’t mean you can’t figure things out. We study the unknown, so even if your – even if Ashlyn’s not somebody who was truly known by any of the other Scribes, that doesn’t mean you can’t learn more about her.” She watched Ember cover her mouth. Maybe she’d said too much, said something she didn’t mean to. “I won’t repeat anything you’re saying here.” She bit her lip in thought. “In case you were worried about that, or… whatever. Again, not like I really go around actively talking to most of the Scribes, save for, well – you and Molly and Beatrice. I also wouldn’t go around repeating things that are private and rightly so unless I had permission, even if I did talk to everyone in HQ.”
“Yeah – I mean, Beatrice only has about five inches on me, but even that’s quite a lot.” Bridget grinned. “But we do hug – usually.” Though there had been times when Beatrice didn’t even want to hug her, and she’d learned to deal. It wasn’t any big sort of issue – Bridget did like some level of physical contact, but could also do without it, especially if the act itself made anyone else uncomfortable. “Well, it’s a nice place to be.” She gave a small shrug. “I enjoy wandering throughout the library when I need space and even my office is too much to deal with. Plus I can go into areas that over half the Scribes don’t bother with – which, to nobody’s surprise, just happen to also be some of my areas of study. We have books about the subjects and yet –” Bridget rolled her eyes. “All those stuffy ‘I went to Oxford and Harvard and have seventeen degree types refuse to believe it’.” She took in a deep breath. “Sorry, not the matter at hand. Have any of them been bothering you, lately? Because that’s just obnoxious.”
Ember appreciated the offer, in fact Bridget was probably one of the few people that she would trust with researching this kind of thing. She seemed to be good with secrets, and considering how young she was when she became a Scribe it was clear that she would definitely know what she was doing. But at the same time it worried her, considering that there was so much about Ashlyn that the Scribes didn't know. That she wasn't perfect, and maybe Bridget wouldn't care about that. But there was also the question of her issues with neutrality and whether or not Bridget would understand. That worried her more than anything else. But having her research phoenix genetics? Maybe that wouldn't go in that direction. It was worth a shot after all.
"I'd like that," Ember finally answered after thinking it through. It wasn't a bad thing to learn about herself, and any answers could be good answers. "Maybe we could work on it together? If you don't mind. I wouldn't want to add more work to what you have to do, or get in your way or anything. I don't want to bother you any." Because after all, interrupting someone else doing their job wasn't going to look good on her. "Though Ashlyn just...I don't want to really say anything about her in case that I've been misinterpreting the little that I know. She left me some notes, but most of them are just little tips of helping me become a Scribe." She was bending the truth there, partially because she knew that some of them were distinctly don't trust the Scribes, or a roundabout way of saying that. Maybe that was in case they were found by someone else, which really hadn't been Ashlyn's best idea. There had to be a reason behind her leaving them in the Scribe HQ, and part of Ember wanted to figure that out. There had to be a good reason. "But you know that's pretty much all that I have. That and a few memories that leave more questions than answers. And stories from my parents. But other than that...I don't know where it start."
It was strange to admit that out loud, partially because it was something that she tried to get from her letters that she sent to herself. That maybe she would ask the right question and it would trigger the right memory and that she would actually find out what she wanted to know. It was just a little bit of hope that she knew she was always going to have.
"It's just the usual understanding how phoenixes are and at the same time being completely clueless type things," Ember admitted with a small shrug, "like how they expect me to remember things from before, or remember them. Or how I do things different than Ashlyn and how that's a shame because Ashlyn was the Scribe that they looked up to. I think that some of them forget that I'm still learning and while I'm trying...I'm just not good at being who I'm supposed to yet."

quinnmann:
Quinn frowned. He did suppose that it was more likely any treasure that may have existed was gone already. It was disappointing though. He’d really like to find some, more for the adventure than anything else. He didn’t need the money, but pirate treasure? That was something else. Quinn had already gotten it stuck in his mind that this was pirate treasure too, even if it probably wasn’t. He was really jumping to far too many conclusions recently. “Okay, but let’s just pretend it isn’t gone. Because if we keep thinking it is, then we’ll be bored and not want to keep going along,” he reasoned with a small shrug. Quinn had never even gone on a proper scavenger hunt before, but he figured if he knew what was at the end and it wasn’t excited, he’d likely not want to do it.
Quinn nodded as he looked at the map as well. “Yeah, that kind of looks like it,” he said softly, biting his lower lip. It was old, and a little faded, but still legible, even if it were only pictures. Quinn paused for a moment, expecting Ember to mention something about the water. When she didn’t, he let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. He didn’t want her to call it quits before they even began. “Okay, so, to the lake first,” he said with a quick nod. “It’s not too far from here right?” he said, pulling up his map on his phone. Generally he knew where things were, but if they were hunting treasure, it was probably best to get there as fast as possible. “I can map out the best route here. My parents have the car today, or I’d suggest going and getting that in order to get there,” he admitted, shrugging sheepishly. He was silently hoping that Ember had a car to use. As much as he liked walking, it would be easier if they did, for some reason, have to follow clues or something. Wasn’t that always how it was on TV and movies? You had a map that brought you to a clue or something.
Part of Ember really wouldn't have minded if they got bored and forgot about it. That idea was the safer option, even though her curiosity was telling her that this could end up being an important find. After all, she was a Scribe (or at least she was going to be one), and there was so much that she could potentially discover. "Right, that's an excellent idea," the girl nodded, forcing her mind to adopt the curious mindset, despite the fact that she could constantly feel that her anxiety was going to try otherwise.
"I actually left my car not that far from here, if you'd rather," Ember suggested, despite the fact that she also knew that Marcus had told her that he was going to need it later. However, it was in their agreement that if Ember needed it for work that she would get to have it, especially since she knew that he was probably just going out with friends or something else that he could easily reschedule. And it could be argued that this was for work, in such a roundabout way that he would have to believe it. After all, their parents were Scribes, he'd heard just about every research excuse in the book, just like she had. And while Marcus might not understand, it was the first time that she had ever pulled this card, and while she could already anticipate his reaction it was probably also going to be her last.
Which meant that this treasure better end up being worth it.
"Though I do apologize that it's incredibly messy. I share it with my brother and haven't gotten the chance to really clean it out in awhile," she admitted, "though I would still take that map, I don't exactly go to the lake often and I'm not exactly sure where to park. But other than that, I don't mind driving. I promise that I won't try to kidnap you or anything, because I do know that happens a lot in town. And I'm really not like that. Even though I'm sure that's probably what a potential kidnapper would say and I'm really sorry about that."

Anything bad happen to you lately? Or is it just as random as what happened to me?
I think it would depend on your definition of bad.
[pm] What is it that happened to you? Or was it just the dreams.

I can’t say that I blame you. It has been too cold for too long.
I agree. I miss the sun. And I miss not having to worry about dying if there’s a lot of snow.

Ah. How extremely unfortunate for you and your brother. I can truly understand his plight though. I’ve recently befallen a similar situation myself.
Oh I’m sorry to hear that. I’d offer to help, but I’m not that good with relationship advice. Or fixing relationship advice.

See that would be helpful if I had any idea what stores were town. Got a list anywhere? Or should I just start guessing?
You could always look up a map of the town on the internet.

I have officially had enough of the subzero temperatures and having to wear a million layers whenever I venture outside. Could some please hurry summer along. We’re all impatiently waiting.
I have been saying this since December, I really am ready for all of this to be over.

Physically, yes. My pride is another thing. I’m assuming you’ve heard of some recent love-troubles plaguing the town?
I have. My brother broke up with his girlfriend for some other girl out of nowhere and now is trying to get his original girlfriend back, so I’ve heard a lot about it through the wall between our bedrooms.

It’s a pretty long story. Have you heard of Ashford River?
Yes, quite a bit actually. I have my version from myself there giving me memories. Were your parents switched?

I wouldn’t know of any problem though. If anything actually is weird, ist how good my life’s been lately. Classes go well, my income is secured, I’m doing well socially.. it’s odd. Well actually we always dream it’s just that we mostly don’t remember them. Hmm so you mean you don’t sleep well, but you also don’t physically sleep worse? I don’t think I really get it.
I don’t really get it either. I’ve just had a weird relationship with sleep lately.

That’s sarcasm isn’t it?
