I shuddered as his breath fanned across my skin. Tilting my head, I exposed more of my neck. “Didn’t anyone ever teach you not to play with your food?”

He growled playfully, a low rumble against my skin that tugged a smile to the corner of my mouth. “If you’re hungry, darling,” I murmured, mimicking his lilt, “you just need to say please.”

Her lips parted, but I captured them before she could answer. I kissed her softly, like it might stitch the broken pieces back together. Like if I was gentle enough, maybe she wouldn’t see how close I was to falling apart.

I pulled back just enough to whisper against her lips, “That little scrap of velvet is a crime against my composure.”

She laughed softly, still breathless. “Because up until this point, you’ve been a perfect gentleman.”

She stepped back.

That broke something inside me. Something I knew would never be knit back together. For the first time since we’d tumbled into this waking nightmare, I was the thing that scared her.

��Maz,” I tried again, softer now.

She took another step back. Just one. Barely a shift of her weight, but gods it felt like an endless expanse. She watched me, eyes wide, unblinking. I felt the weight of her gaze like a blade at my throat.

He didn’t bite. That would’ve been a kindness.

Instead, he trailed his tongue over my pulse, one slow lick, letting me feel what he could do. What he wanted to do.

He pulled back just enough to meet my eyes again, fingers still cradling my neck like a precious thing… or perhaps like prey.

“So go ahead,” he whispered. “Lash out. Bite back.”

A pause. A beat. The twist of a slow, sinful smile.

“But don’t you dare pretend you don’t want me to be the monster in this nightmare. We both need me to ruin you.”

A taste of Shadow and Ruin Chapter Two:

The last shred of my control snapped. I grabbed her by the hips, spun her, and pressed her back against the rough wood. My body caged hers, one hand braced beside her head, the other digging into the soaked leather at her waist.

Her breath caught.

Gods, that sound. It cracked something inside me. 

I lost all sense, if I’d had any to begin with. I felt like I was running on instinct, but it didn’t feel like mine. It was foreign, like this strange world we’d stumbled into, and I had no idea what to do with it. 

I was amused. Furious. I wanted to protect her. Devour her. The contradictions spun, sickening and relentless, until I couldn’t tell one desire from another.

I leaned in, close enough for my lips to brush her ear. “You summoned me here.”

I finally started writing my first fanfic... it seemed the next logical step. :)

SUMMARY: Astarion and Mazikeen find themselves in a living nightmare where monsters aren’t the only things that lurk in the shadows.

A taste of Chapter One: Tangled

I tried to shove the shadows away, wrestling for control that had never truly been mine. I willed them back inside, but they refused. Please, I begged them silently. Just this once. Listen to me.

“Let me go,” he growled.

“I’m trying!” The more he struggled, the tighter the shadows pulled. “Stop—” I choked on a strangled breath. Our arms were pinned, legs tangled, his leather-clad knee wedged between my thighs. “You’re making it worse,” I coughed.

“Oh, I’m making it worse? Forgive me, I wasn’t expecting to be molested by the dark today.”

“I… I…” The words stammered out, breathless as the shadows constricted. “Can’t breathe.”

“Then release them, darling,” he snarled the endearment like a curse. “Unless suffocation is part of your courting ritual.”
