To the Hero: To the hero who sacrificed more than I can imagine, I sometimes wonder; do words on a page even mean a thing? Can words replace fire and the suffocating smell of smoke? Can words silence the screams of the ones you stood to protect? I know they can’t, but words are all I have. Sometimes I wonder who you were. What made you laugh? Cry? I imagine you liked baseball, and the Yankees were doing well. Did you watch the game on Sunday night? Sometimes I wonder what kind of music you liked to play in the car while driving to work. I wonder what your smile looked like. Did you have a family? Maybe a little girl with ocean eyes and a pink tutu. She was Daddy’s biggest fan. I think people feel like heroes are far away. But you really weren’t much different than me, were you? You were just an ordinary guy. A guy with a picture of a little princess on your desk whose smile could dazzle the world. I think we wonder who the ordinary heroes are now. Maybe once you did, too. When we pass people in life, who would it be? To the ordinary: where are you? Today, what are you doing? I know you remember. How could you ever forget? Something that seems so far away suddenly becomes real. But not real enough. If there came a day when America needed you, would you rise? Would you stand? Would you walk through fire? Would you die an ordinary hero? Because even the ordinary are never forgotten.
