EnchantedTale - Chapter 1: Awakening
The first sensation that Frisk felt as they woke up was soft flower petals that brushed against their cheeks as they opened their eyes. They realized that they were in an unfamiliar place, so Frisk sat up as their eyes began to focus on their surroundings. They were in a poorly lit room, surrounded by large walls made from dark, purple bricks. Frisk slowly got up from their place in the red flower bed and headed towards a large door just a few feet away.
Pushing the door open was a challenge for Frisk, a small child with little to no muscle, straining their body against the heavy oak door, but it eventually opened enough for Frisk to slip through. Behind it lay a much more well-lit hallway that led on to an unknown area. Frisk, not knowing what else to do, decided to walk along the path to see what waited ahead. Their steps echoed loudly through the large open area. After a few minutes of mundane walking, Frisk found a path to another room blocked by a set of large metal spikes.
Had they missed something? The brick walls appeared to be completely bare, without any levers or buttons that might have lowered the spikes, but Frisk did notice some discoloration in a few of the bricks. On a five-foot area on the wall, there seemed to be a pattern of slightly faded bricks turned pink as well as a few that were slightly darker. Frisk had no idea what kind of place they could be in, but this could be some sort of puzzle meant to lower the spikes, if they weren’t controlled through an unseen switch in the next room.
They reached out and pushed on one of the pink bricks, causing it to move further into the wall. Frisk then pushed another pink brick next to it but heard a clicking noise before both bricks slid back out to their original positions. It appeared to be some kind of pattern puzzle that Frisk would have to work at to memorize, so they began to press on the buttons at random so they could figure out what order all the bricks needed to be pushed in.
After some trial and error, Frisk discovered that the pink brick in the middle was the starting point and accidentally reset the puzzle a few times when they had to jump up to reach a few of the higher ones. It took a little over an hour to finish, but once Frisk had successfully finished the puzzle, they heard a loud clang as the metal spikes withdrew into the floor. They walked into the next room quickly, not knowing if there was some kind of timer that would cause the spikes to pop up again.
The next room was part of a larger hall area that was decorated with tapestries, torches held up red crystals embedded into the walls, several plaques with writing on them, and archways leading to other rooms. Frisk walked up to the plaque nearest to him, which seemed to be of some type of metal, but couldn’t read the letters written on it. Despite this place looking well kept, maybe it was the remnant of some ancient civilization that had a groundskeeper? If not, maybe it is some kind of castle?
Frisk, deciding that they should keep looking around and try to find someone, started to walk down the hall at a quicker pace as they got glimpses of random rooms through the archways. A lot of these rooms seemed to hold items someone would see in a museum, with ancient armor, weapons, locked chests, old books, and a few small items on pedestals being displayed through the rooms. Frisk would quickly pop into a few exhibits that held tablets or cloth depicting humans and monsters on them out of curiosity, since they were much easier to understand than the plaques.
Among some of these older forms of art, however, was a large canvas placed on the back wall, which was held in a gold frame that had images of animals etched into it. The painting itself depicted two large, beast-like monsters dressed in fine clothing with a smaller monster, who must have been a child, standing beside them. What made it stand out was a rosy cheeked human child holding the hand of the monster child, but Frisk had no idea who the other child could be.
Frisk got a bit closer to the painting to get a better look at the human’s features but only was able to look for a few seconds before hearing someone walking down the hall. Each step made a loud tapping sound, which Frisk found a little odd, but they walked out to the hallway to get a look at whoever was approaching the room. At first, Frisk thought it was human, but the facial features were all wrong…and once they did a double take, realized that a very tall, humanoid monster with a goat head was coming their way.
Frisk froze in place out of shock, and the goat-like monster, looking a bit shocked herself, stood still as she took a moment to process what she was seeing. A small, skinny child with brown hair and torn clothing stood before her, probably being around eight years old, had somehow found their way into the temple. Had the child found the doorway to the kingdom by chance, like many of her other human visitors? Where did they come from, and why was the child in such a poor state?
While Frisk kept still like a deer in headlights, Toriel found herself moving towards them as she tried to think of what to do, feeling the need to take care of this small child who had wandered in. They flinched as Toriel moved to take their hand, with Frisk finally coming back to their senses enough to try and wiggle out of her hold. Toriel held onto Frisk tightly as she turned back the way she came, intending to take Frisk home so she could get a better look at their condition.
It wasn’t ideal for her to practically drag Frisk around, given that she was a stranger to them, but Toriel didn’t see any other way to keep them close. Taking them to the main area of her temple, several small waterways and puzzles lined the upcoming rooms, so Toriel considered turning this into a teaching moment. She turned to Frisk, getting down on one knee to get down to the child’s level as she started to explain a pressure plate puzzle in front of them.
Frisk…had no idea what Toriel was trying to say to them, and thought that wherever they were, the monsters here talked in a different language. The only thing they could think to do was shake their head at Toriel until she realized what the problem was. Once she knew the issue, however, she still encouraged Frisk to learn how to complete the puzzle by watching her do it herself.
As they went through several puzzles together, Toriel never let go of Frisk’s hand in fear they may get injured by some of the more dangerous traps. One in particular was several large rows of metal spikes, for which you would need to find the hidden path in order to not trigger the spikes to pop back up on you right after you stepped on them. After she had first moved into this temple, though, she had disabled other fatal traps, but this one was more dangerous to work on than others.
As the two grew closer to Toriel’s house, a few small monsters that lived in the temple with her started to cross their path. Any of them who got a little too close to Frisk got an intense glare from Toriel, so most of the others tried to keep their distance as Frisk and Toriel passed them. The monsters here knew better than to pick a fight with whatever wards Toriel brought home, especially since she was more than capable of putting them back in their place.
Frisk was frightened of being dragged off by a goat-faced woman covered in fur that had strangely shaped fingernails, but so far, she hadn’t tried to hurt them. Toriel’s home, which was built into the temple, was much warmer than the halls Frisk had been exploring, and one of the first things she did was offer them food. After carrying them into the kitchen, Frisk was given an apple to eat while Toriel left the room to go and work on something in another part of her home.
Now that they thought of it, Frisk couldn’t remember when the last time they ate was, so the apple was quickly taken care of with very little hesitation. Sure, maybe this monster could have given them a poisoned apple imbued with some kind of curse, but Frisk could honestly care less at that moment. Spotting a large bowl of fruit on the counter, Frisk grabbed a chair so they could step up to the abnormally tall table to get some more food.
Toriel returned to the kitchen holding a few books in hand, and a small chuckle from her catching Frisk in the fruit bowl caught them off guard, causing an orange to be lost to the floor. She motioned for Frisk to come closer and sat them in a chair at the kitchen table as she opened a book that displayed a few pictures of what looked like odd runes or markings. As Toriel kept flipping through pages and looking for a reaction from Frisk, then a page containing a few familiar letters caught Frisk’s attention.
