 Bitcoin's Recent Renaissance Could Be Linked to Algorithmic Trading

The recent crypto market jump could be linked to algorithmic trading, Bloomberg writes on Wednesday, April 3. Algorithmic trading — a method that uses automated software to detect trends and determine when trades should be made — has been on the rise in the last few months, according to Bloomberg. The industry has seen 17 new algo or quantitative funds launched since September, an amount that purportedly comprises 40 percent of crypto hedge funds started during this period.

While crypto funds in general lost around 72 percent due to the 2018 bear market, these algo funds reported on gains of between 3 percent and 10 percent per month during the so-dubbed crypto winter. Bloomberg states that Bitcoin’s (BTC) unexpected 20 percent surge price on Tuesday, April 2, shortly after the Asian markets opened, might have been provoked by a $100 million trade made on three major exchanges. As experts told Reuters, a 20,000 BTC order (around $100 million at press time) was spread across United States-based crypto exchanges Coinbase and Kraken, as well as Luxembourg’s Bitstamp. Triggered by the giant order, the bots could then start trading, forcing the prices and volumes to rise. Some entrepreneurs quoted by Bloomberg think that algo trading will have a positive impact on the crypto industry. Wei Zhou, CFO of Malta-based crypto exchange Binance, says that they are going to be the new rock stars of the industry. Meanwhile, others fear that algo trading can trigger market manipulation. Travis Kling, founder of the Los Angeles-based crypto hedge fund Ikigai, told Bloomberg that some of them could use fake orders to trick other traders. Bloomberg has issued a series of articles and TV spots citing the possible reasons behind the visible market uprising. For instance, Bloomberg author Eric Lam recalled an April Fool’s Day story that claimed that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission had finally approved a Bitcoin ETF as possibly affecting the crypto markets. Another reason cited by Bloomberg is the upcoming question of Brexit, as some believe that investors are changing pounds to BTC in the wake of Britain’s divorce with the EU.

Samsung releases a Chromebook-like Windows 10 laptop.

Samsung is announcing two new laptops at CES. The company is launching a pro-level laptop called the Notebook 9 Pro and a laptop for student called the Notebook Flash.

The Notebook Flash is an entry-level laptop with a textured design. It looks like fabric but it’s made out of plastic. The screen doesn’t look great to be honest — it has a narrow viewing angle. And specs aren’t that great. 64GB of storage, 4GB of RAM and entry-level Intel CPUs. The good news is that it has a bunch of ports — two USB-C ports, two big USB ports, an HDMI port, etc. But it’s a laptop for schools and students who just want something basic. The Intel Celeron N4000 version is going to ship for $350 on January 15. It’s slightly more expensive than Windows 10 S laptops, but you get a full version of Windows for that price. The 13-inch Notebook 9 Pro features a slimmer bezel and an updated backlit keyboard. There’s a fingerprint reader on the side of the device. You can convert it into a tablet by pushing the screen all the way. And the laptop comes with an Active Pen. The default configuration comes with 256GB of flash storage, an integrated Intel GPU and 8GB of RAM. There are two Thunderbolt 3 ports, one USB-C port and a microSD slot. Command Line (Console) and How to Use It

Originally from MS-DOS, the command line (also console) is used to manage the operational system by entering textual commands. Most users know nothing or very little about the command line, although opening it is necessary for remote technical support. A basic knowledge of the command line and its uses will also come in handy to fix computer problems independently. 

Launching the Command Line

There are at least three ways of launching the command line in Windows. One of the quickest ones is to press the Windows button (showing the Windows icon) and R simultaneously. This will open the Execute menu. All you have to do is enter cmd and press OK. Please note that the opening command line will be assigned local user rights. If you need to run the command line as administrator, choose another method.

  The second method is to run the search line and enter “cmd” or “command line” and then launch the command line by clicking on it. If you want to run the command line as administrator, double-click the right mouse button on it and choose “Run as administrator. This method requires Windows 7 or later. To run the command line as administrator in earlier Windows versions, click the right mouse button on the command line and choose “Run as administrator”.  

Commands

 The command line has a set of acceptable commands that require correct syntax. To view the list of acceptable commands, enter help and press Enter.  Let’s look at the commands that may come in handy when configuring anonymization tools. 

ping

This command verifies connection to a remote computer, data transfer speed and loss percent.

You can identify the remote computer to be pinged (that is, determine its connectivity) by name (eg. yandex.ru) or by ip (eg. 77.88.55.60). ping yandex.ru ping 77.88.55.60  

tracert

   ipconfig /all

   route

 This command provides access to IP routing table’s content. Enter route (with no parameters) to view functions. 

 To show on the screen: route print

To add routes until the endpoint: route add

For instance, the default route showing the default gateway address 192.168.12.1: route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 192.168.12.1 To add a constant route, add –p after the route: i.e. route -p add 10.41.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 10.27.0.1

Google to charge device makers to use Chrome and Search in the EU

Aside from appealing the European Union Competition Commission's decision against Android, Google has reacted to the decision in another, separate way, and smartphone manufacturers won't be all too pleased about it, either. Announcing the changes in a blog post published this Tuesday, Google's senior VP for Platforms & Ecosystems, Hiroshi Lockheimer, said Google will start licensing Google Search and Chrome for the EU - separately. In other words, smartphone manufacturers looking to have both Google Search and Chrome in their devices for the European market will have to pay extra. Android will still remain free and open source, and the rest of Google's services, like the Play Store, Maps and similar, will remain bundled under a different paid license. Google claims it was forced into a move like this by the EU's Commission, because bundling Chrome and search meant more revenue through ads. “Since the pre-installation of Google Search and Chrome together with our other apps helped us fund the development and free distribution of Android, we will introduce a new paid licensing agreement for smartphones and tablets shipped into the EEA,” Lockheimer said. The announcement doesn’t discuss prices, so it will take more time before we find out how much money device manufacturers will have to pay in order to get Google’s Search and Chrome bundled into their devices. The question is – will they do it in the first place, and if (and how much) will Google’s competition benefit from the move.
