Initiatives Taken by the Following Pharma Companies in India against COVID-19
India is putting it all efforts to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Every person is contributing to help the nation in this time of health emergency. Now, Pharma Companies in India are coming forward to assist the country in combating this deadly virus. With each passing day, more companies are lending out a hand.
Now, let's check out some leading pharmaceutical companies who are supporting the nation to fight against the COVID-19 outbreak.
1. Dabur Group
Dabur Group swore support towards India's Fight against the Covid-19. It is helping the government's endeavors to persevere through the social and financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

Ø Dabur India is safeguarding weaker sections of the society. It is empowering them to access essential and food supplies. The Dabur Group has set-up a 'Dabur Care Fund for COVID-19'. This fund care for lives, livelihood, and sustain those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ø The company has put aside a fund of Rs 21 crore for relief efforts. This amount will be utilized to help the immediate needs of those most disturbed by this pandemic.
Ø A sum of Rs 11 crore out of this promised amount is being donated to PM CARES Fund (Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situation Fund) by Dabur India Limited and its other units.
Ø Dabur will offer assistance in 3 areas:
ü Contribution in the PM Cares Fund.
ü Assistance for frontline workers who are taking pains in combating this viral disease.
ü Assistance for the migrant workers and supporting the helpless individuals of society.
2. Serum Institute of India
Serum Institute of India is one of the important Pharma Companies in India. The Serum has stated that it is developing its novel COVID-19 candidate vaccine in collaboration with Codagenix. Codagenix is a well-known biotech company based in the United States.
Ø The COVID-19 vaccine developed by these two is now in the animal testing/preclinical phase.
Ø By the end of August, preclinical data from primates and mice will be accessible. The results will be submitted to the regulatory experts.
Ø The candidate vaccine being developed by Serum Institute of India is anticipated to go in human clinical trials in the next six months. The vaccine will be market-ready by near the beginning of 2022.
Ø The project cost, as estimated by the Serum Institute of India, is about Rs3bn ($41.9m).
Ø To get more funds, the Serum Institute of India is planning to form global alliances.
Ø Serum Institute of India has partnered with Codagenix to create a live-attenuated vaccine. This vaccine will be developed using the deoptimization technology of Codagenix.
Ø The vaccine-virus strain build by the companies is matching to the original virus. It is projected that the India-made vaccine will go into human trials within six months.
3. RPG Life Sciences
The Managing Director of RPG Life Sciences – Yugal Sikri has reported that his company has encountered first-time confusion and trouble in getting life-saving medicine Azathioprine. This medicine is sold under the name Azaron by RPG Life Sciences. It has a major share in the market.

Ø Azathioprine is an old immunosuppressant medicine. It is provided to patients undergone an organ transplant.
Ø This medicine has to be taken by patients for months so that their body does not reject the transplanted organ.
Ø It is prescribed to rheumatoid arthritis patients as well.
Ø As various Indian medication companies rely on China, similarly, RPG Life Sciences also depends on China for its raw materials.
Ø RPG relies on Hubei-based suppliers to obtain Azathioprine intermediate. Hubei is the province where the epicenter of COVID-19 – Wuhan is situated.
Ø With each day passing, there was a decline in the inventories of Azathioprine.
Ø Therefore, the RPG's senior executives got worried as they do no notice any indication of normalcy in the Hubei province of China. Hubei, which is a chief hub of pharmaceutical manufacturing, was badly affected by the novel coronavirus.
Ø RPG Life Sciences had few raw materials and packaging materials but was lacking the main materials required for developing this medicine.
Ø RPG contacted with the raw materials suppliers in China and explained their situation.
Ø Sikri stated that when Hubei lessened the restrictions on March 24, RPG was the first to obtain the raw materials.
Ø Though there were some issues at the port, RPG Life Sciences was able to get the shipment of drug raw materials to India.
Ø The company has also developed an app called SafeSeniors. This app aims to identify Corona's risk in elderly persons.
4. Mankind Pharma
Mankind Pharma is also offering assistance to the nation to battle against this pandemic.

Ø Mankind Pharma has pledged to donate Rs 51 crore for COVID-19 menace in the CM Relief Funds.
Ø As the cases of coronavirus are increasing in the country, this pharmaceutical company is contributing the amount in the COVID-19 fund to fight away this deadly ailment.
Ø Mankind Pharma is also donating PPE (personal protective equipment), ventilators, and medicines for those states where the positive cases are the highest.
Ø Mankind Pharma recently also launched a campaign #thanksforbeingmyfamily. It is to wish the safety of doctors and other medical staff treating patients by putting their lives in danger.
5. 1 MG
This company has opened a lab test for COVID-19. The company is based in Gurugram and has the backing of ICMR. As of now, the Lab Test is available only in two cities, Mumbai and Pune.
