ATTENTION ALL HOMOPHOBIC PARENTS
This–
–is not going away.
You can try all you want to get rid of it.
You can try to demand the network takedown shows that allow this.
You can try to ban your children from watching those shows.
You can even try to take the TV away and demand your children read a book.
But here’s what you can’t take away.
You’ve told your kids their entire life that this is wrong, perverted, and disgusting. The worst part being that your kid is even like the characters above.
But for a brief moment, they were told the opposite was true.
They were told that there is nothing wrong with who they are or who they like.
They were told that this one thing about them doesn’t change who they are.
They were told that in this dumpster fire of a planet, that they are not alone.
And at that moment, they are happy and at peace.
And you can’t take that away.
Again, you can try, and for a while, it might seem like you succeeded.
But your child will always come back to that moment.
Hell, your child might even make stories of their own, featuring characters that can give the same feeling they felt all those years ago.
And kids who will see those characters will continue to make more themselves.
To make others feel like they are heard in a way they never did before seeing some goofy cartoon aimed at children.
And that’s why this isn’t going away.
No matter how badly you want it to.

First reblog in a long time. I knew Kai was trans! We all did! But GASP! Hannah is non-binary?!
Happy Trans Day of Visibility 🏳️⚧️✨ I'm one of the trans artists who worked on Win or Lose, and I'm gonna talk about it 👍
This is a small snippet of the monumental amount of care and skill that went in to developing Kai, every department from casting to story to animation to shading to lighting, and everything outside and in between, handled her with a reverence and kindness that I wish I could hand deliver to every trans person who needs it right now.

1. As many audience members have guessed, Kai's conversation with her dad at the head of her episode was never about baseball, it was her coming out 🏳️⚧️
2. We explored representing Kai's dysphoria as if it abstracted her face into fractured pieces. We aimed to represent what Kai was experiencing inside, rather than create an antagonist creature like we did with Sweaty and Laurie.
3. We wanted to translate the puzzle pieces to 3D forms, while also trying to avoid anything that would make her look 'scary' or monstrous - we never wanted to take away her humanity.
4. As we explored these visuals, we realized that making the abstract forms look and feel similar to Kai's body made the experience feel too external (and a little creepy), and it would greatly impact how we would have to animate her face. For these reasons, we branched away from the physical puzzle face effect. It was a really cool visual experiment, though!
5. We returned to 2D for Kai's dysphoria, and additionally developed the sinking and scratches to express Kai's pain without distorting her physical form.
6. While we loved the visuals we created for when Kai is feeling down, it was important to us to establish a positive foil to avoid implying that the trans experience is an exclusively negative one. For this reason, we set out to capture trans joy. Kai floats when she feels affirmed, and is surrounded by joyful colors and light.
7. When Kai meets the Pickles, it was the first time she used her chosen name, and we learn Hannah is nonbinary 🏳️⚧️
I also designed a bunch of stickers for Kai! They were placed throughout her room and on her skateboard. The late-game censorship removed a lot of them (including the cracked eggs, which I'm shocked got flagged) BUT our girl Nimona made it to final 🦈💖
One of the coolest meetings I've been in was when we had a meeting of a group of trans employees to discuss Kai's outfits and what she might wear. The group was a wide range of ages, identities, and fashion preferences - the only universal agreement was that she'd definitely own a dysphoria hoodie 😂 her pre-censor outfit also included rainbow socks in the finale. I put Hannah on this slide bc their fashion also goes hard, and pre-censor they introduced themselves with their pronouns (they/them)

An interview with Margie Cohn, President of Dreamworks Animation, gave this information. (I translated a certain section).
eC: One of your goals is to release one original film and one film from an established franchise each year. Can any franchise or saga return or do you consider any of them closed?
MC: I think, one way or another, maybe streaming movies could be ideal for those characters who didn’t quite make it to the star level of Po or the Madagascar penguins . If not everyone loves them, a specific section of the audience loves them.
That means that DreamWorks is taking a page out of Disney/Pixar’s book on making direct-to-streaming movies/specials with near-cinematic quality, most likely to be released on Netflix and Peacock. Either as sequels or spin-offs around beloved and underappreciated characters.

You know another reason why The Owl House doesn’t ‘fit the brand’ for Disney? It’s because TOH doesn’t just celebrate the persecuted but also calls out the persecutors (hence one of its main villains being a white colonizing Puritan with founding father vibes), which is too much for Disney’s milquetoast ‘family values’. They want to appeal to additional markets, without risking ‘alienating’ pre-existing ones by naming them in discussions of prejudice.
TOH is too spicy and openly defiant, it’s not about existing in a neat, accommodating, and palatable manner, but fighting, hence the emphasis on questioning authority, critical thinking, and challenging the status quo. Characters are already doing such a thing well before they or the audience find out about the villain’s doomsday plan, because even without such a plan, the status quo is inherently unsustainable. And it’s a system too topically parallel to a certain real-world one...
It’s hilarious. I remember giving Disney the benefit of the doubt when I saw them allow Enchanting Grom Fright, and its queer rep; Daring myself to think they’ve actually begun to change. Only for Disney to decide to shorten TOH’s run within three weeks of the episode airing; Within two weeks of Wing it like Witches, no less! TOH was officially cut after Agony of a Witch aired, but that’s so soon after two consecutively gay episodes, and I’m sure the decision to shorten a show takes a week or so to finalize and announce to its runners.

Yeah given...you know what, of course they'd settle for a time skip.

If we do end up having a time skip of a month or so by the beginning of Season 3, then that’s honestly kind of a genius and meta utilization of the real-life hiatus to the story’s advantage. Because alongside Luz and her friends, we the audience are forced to experience, in real-time, the wait for a solution; The agonizing lack of closure as we also try to shift back into a sense of normalcy and ‘move on’ from what just happened, but we can’t.
But we also can’t really do anything about it either, until it’s time for the narrative to allow Luz and her friends to return to the Demon Realm; So we feel their exact struggle as they do, which makes it all the more topical that the show takes place this year in 2022. It’s honestly so incredibly clever and meta of the writers and I adore it, how we’re put into these kids’ shoes with the abrupt cutoff from the conflict occurring in the Demon Realm; Struggling to find some way to cope and process all the while, but that just feels like a painful distraction from what’s really a priority, right?
So we’re caught between angst but also the joy and wonder of these kids exploring the human world, just as they themselves realize! You can really imagine these kids adjusting to human life with Camila and Vee right now; It’s like how Dracula Daily’s format allows the reader to feel like this is happening for real, somewhere out in the world... And it really blurs the line between fiction and reality, which is kind of ironic given the show’s themes for Luz in particular. But in the end, her ‘fantasy world’ WAS real life and her arc was about accepting and engaging with it as such, instead of trying to run away from problems there as she had back home.
It’s incredibly compelling and brilliantly immersive, and makes you feel involved with and a part of the story, and thus all the more invested in seeing how it turns out. It’s like the protagonists are real and also wondering the same; How will this story’s end, as relevant and real to them as it’s becoming to us, turn out? And that creates even more wonderful suspense for this hiatus.
Which given how creators have no control nor any way to exactly anticipate the way hiatuses and releases are timed and turn out, is just a wonderful alignment of the stars. And that makes me appreciate Dana’s point on how amidst the tragedy of TOH being shortened, there is a beautiful and unique opportunity presented as a result, that would otherwise have not been possible!
