Robbienatural Ep. 2: The Fourth Wall is Jump Rope
Tumblr media
A new episode of Robbienatural is out! We talk about the metanarratives, parallels, and audience acknowledgement used to play into (and against) expectations. Honestly, most of Robbie's episode would apply, but we're focusing on First Born, No Place Like Home, Metafiction, and Don't Call Me Shurley! Also features all the tangents expected of an EoBPod episode 😅
Tune in wherever you listen to podcasts!

"I can't remember exactly how we went about picking this particular episode for this moment . . . absolutely insane to me that I'm like working on a script and I get to even just write [Dean's] name down there. It was very strange. Yeah, I mean, so much of that was the brainchild of Robbie and Jensen working together as well, like they had a vision and a plan for the Dean of it all . . . It was super cool to see it happening, like to be talking about it for a long time and then for it to actually be on paper and then to see the early cuts of the moment and then when it was like cut with score and music like it gave me chills the first time I saw it. I was like this is such a cool ending to an episode and people are gonna be freaking out in the best way. And I'm so excited." –Nic Chatree Sridej

"[John eventually] gets to talk to his dad. And, like, what does that mean? Like, how does that change John's trajectory? Like, one of my biggest things I'm sad about with The Winchesters being cancelled is, like, I'd love to see how this John grows up. Like how does this John change having been able to talk to the ghost of his dad, having to fight all this, having to know about monsters before Mary's death, you know? How does trauma change when you can face it face forward rather than backward?" -Rachel Lynett

"So I'm Central American/South American. And so [La Tunda] was someone that I found in my research and I was like, we have to do her. We have to; she's so cool. And I know that it was like really important to Robbie [Thompson] to find, um, non-American specific monsters, which was a really fun challenge of like, finding mythology outside of Catholicism and outside of American mythology." -Rachel Lynett

"Respectfully to Kripke and everybody else, [John being a veteran] kind of gets a little brushed over, I think, in Supernatural and like . . . how does war haunt you? How does that change you, you know? . . . How did that change John? Like, when we see John in Supernatural, he's just kind of this like, geeky good kid, you know, in the flashbacks, and it's like, he just came back from 'Nam, like he's not... he can't be that put together." -Rachel Lynett

"I will say, and I will get in trouble for this, and I will deal with the trouble that I will get into: that kiss almost got cut. And I was like, absolutely not. Like, we have to have it. We have to have it on screen. We have to have it. And I had to fight a little for it . . . This is going to be huge, huge for the Destiel fans out there. We need to have it." -Rachel Lynett

Hey folks! Our team over at The End of the Book Podcast has come to the collective decision to put our Robbienatural series on hold in order to stand in solidarity with both the WGA and the SAG-AFTRA strikes. We'll keep you updated as things start to shake out. In the mean time, you can still listen to all of our past episodes, including our Jarynatural miniseries and our episode recaps. Happy striking!

#the caption. that's exactly it !#often when others criticize john or point out how dean deserved better / was just a kid#dean shuts that down like no no i'm fine i was fine it wasn't that bad#bc 1. dean never sees himself as the victim. he had to grow up fast. he was never a child#it couldn't be child abuse in his mind if he was already a mini adult y'know?#if it happened to *someone else* his same age of course he'd think it was bad#but it's Different for him#he always holds himself to a different standard than other ppl#and then 2. it's that insider-outsider mentality#(and thank u to my pal urne-buriall for explaining it so well in their various posts and tags abt dean and john's dynamic)#like *dean* is allowed to criticize john (esp in his own mind) bc he understands the nuance and complexity of the situation in ways other p#*other people don't#but the minute someone else comes in criticizing john or the way they were raised he falls back on that insider-outsider mentality#like that person doesn't get it !! they don't have all the facts !!#but. at the same time. when people also /praise/ john......it also triggers this 'but you don't really know him' response from dean too#like someone says he was bad and it's like 'well you also don't know abt all the good'#and then someone says he was a great father and he's like. 'well you don't know abt all the bad'#and it's crazy that this response from dean also happens when it's sam talking#bc sam technically should be part of the 'in' group that Knows what the situation was really like#but. but. !! he doesn't.#we find out over and over that there was so much abt their childhood that sam wasn't aware of#things happening around him constantly that he had no clue abt til dean tells him decades later#like dean being sent away for disobeying. john's brand of 'discipline' on dean (flagstaff)#and it's just a testament to how well dean sheltered sam growing up that dean reacts this way with him abt john#anyways. feeling some kind of way rn !!!!#dean's complicated feelings re: john are one of my fave things ever#family dynamics#dean studies (via @angelsdean )

"When other people point out how you were treated horribly, you shouldn't have gone through this, this was abusive . . . He's like, oh, no, I'm okay. Yeah, no, it wasn't that bad. I'm fine. But he's allowed to say within himself, actually, this is messed up."

Hi, everybody. Much like the writers of this show we love so much, we are human and despite our good intentions, we sometimes mess up. This is to say that we realized we messed up while recording the 'Plot or Not' episode and are re-releasing it with a couple of edits and an intro apologizing for 1.) the use of the name of episode 1x02 of Supernatural, and 2.) not calling it out when we heard it.
For those who aren’t aware, the name of 1x02 is an evil spirit that originated with the Algonquin tribe and spread to different tribes of Anishinaabe culture. Traditionally, the name isn’t spoken by members of these indigenous groups or otherwise. Because it’s an evil spirit, members of these indigenous tribes don’t want to call its attention or incur its wrath. As white hosts, it’s our responsibility to be respectful of other cultures’ and races’ traditions, especially when it comes to the ways this franchise has disrespected them in the past, and we failed at that while recording. We will strive to do better going forward, and will also be linking some helpful resources in this episode description if you would like to learn more.
Thank you so much for listening to this podcast. We hope that you continue to follow along with us and this show, and we also hope that if you ever hear us say or do something that rubs you the wrong way or that is disrespectful, please feel free to call us in by messaging us on any of our social media platforms. The last thing we want is to alienate any listeners; our goal will always be to make this an inclusive space for everyone, which means acknowledging when we make mistakes and pledging to do better going forward.
