I love how Jonathan Harker has like. no sense of self-presevation whatsoever. He literally goes "Count Dracula doesn't have a reflection, what a peculiar fellow :)"

"The picture of Dorian Gray" and uncenzured Polish translation
when i was reading "The picture of Dorian Gray" me and my freands a lot of times were thinking - "how on earth this line was not cenzured? what was the original version if this is already cenzured?"
It ends up polish version (which i was reading) difers from eanglish one. Thanks to one women, Marii Feldmanowej(1874-1953) who transleted it 10 years after Oscar Wilde trial. She was his big fan of and translated a lot of his works. Knowing about the nature of Oscar Wilde trial and seeing a homoerotic subtext in his work she decided to highlight it in her translation and canonize Bazil love for Dorian.
For example insted of "The lad was infinitely dear to him" she wrote "bezgranicznie kochał doriana"(he loved Dorian unconditionally). A little later she changed Bazil words "perhaps one should never put one's worship into words" to "może nie należy nigdy miłości swej ujmować w słowa"(perhaps one should never put their love into words). Which makes allusion to Alfred Douglas (Oscar Wilde lover) poem "two loves" - "I am the love that dare not speak its name." Which in times of Oscar Wilde trial had bacome the epitome of homosexual love. The same happend in chapter 1 when Bazil said (When i like people immensely i never tell their names to any one" she translates it as "Jeśli kogoś bardzo kocham przed nikim nie wymawiam jego nazwiska." (If I love someone very much, I don't mention their name in front of anyone.) It shows that words "like" and "worship" under which Oscar Wilde was hiding his sexuality she translated to "love" exposing his true intensions.
Let me remind you that Maria Feldmanowa translated it only 10 years after Oscar Wilde trial. In which "The picture of dorian gray" was used as a evidence against him. Feldmanowa was brave enought to translated it and change fragments to clarify the nature of basil fealings and to honor dead author. Which was very brave of her and relevant.
the sources for this is :
oscar wilde - mężczyzna fatalny [Tomasz Koliściak] (Which i practicaly translated there but if you want to know more about how "the picture of dorian gray" had impact on polish culture and biografhy of oscar wilde i really urge you to read it.)
The picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde translated by Maria Feldmanowa
Two Loves by lord Alfred Douglas
#finally some absolutely delicious literary analisys#polish uncenzored translation mentioned!!! i loved it#the picture of dorian gray

I just love enjolras so much. He is the most beautiful man to ever live. He looks like a woman and a flower. He is flawless. He is carrying the weight of sending all his friends to die. He is ruthless. He cries when he kills someone. He is a nerd. And a virgin. He loves combeferre and courf. He cares about everyone. He is kind and hopeful and violent and smart and angrier than a dog. He believes in a better world. He is terrible.

This has propably been pointed out already, but just saying, people of Skotoprigonyevsk ceasing to think of Elder Zosima as a saint only because of his rotting corpse is basicaly the same thing adressed in The Grand Inquisitor a couple chapters earlier, with the whole Why Didn't You Give Them A Clear Miracle So That They Unify In Faith thing (the 2nd temptation).
#BUT!#Alyosha then proceeds to have a bit of a crisis not because he no longer deems his elder a saint#but because of the people's reactions#AND THEN HE EMBRACES GRUSHA'S INNER GOODNESS#further proving that faith is not dependant on miracles but on love#(as previously seen also in The Grand Inquisitor with Jesus kissing the old man)#sorry this was a rant#brothers karamazov#alyosha karamazov#elder zosima#the grand inquisitor

Hi don't mind me I'll be in my room thinking about how orpheus going to the underworld for eurydice is seen as an act of love while actually also being an act of defiance and him turning back is regarded as an act of defiance while mainly being an act of love

I am Jeff. That's about it. I'm THE Jeff, however, so if you have any questions for the guy living in a world with @god-offical, @satan-offical, @grim-reaper-official, and such, it's me. The dude. Jeff. Any pronouns except she/her. Don't worry. I'm just a dude.
