“To write as if your life depended on it: to write across the chalkboard, putting up there in public words you have dredged, sieved up from dreams, from behind screen memories, out of silence—words you have dreaded and needed in order to know you exist.”
— Adrienne Rich, from What is Found There- Notebooks on Poetry and Politics; “As if Your Life Depended on It,” (via honeyfleshed)

I chose this quote because I’m starting to write nonfiction for the first time in my life and there is an aspect of feeling exposed, deeply vulnerable. I connect this idea to Barthelme’s belief that one should write what scares her the most. I don’t think I can write around what I’m most afraid of anymore; I have to write towards it.
“Now I feel that I am afraid of revealing myself. Afraid that what I write will leave me vulnerable and no longer able to defend myself.”
— Liv Ullmann, from Changing
