Why Emergency Medical Serivices?
Although the most obvious pathway in EMS is to become a certified paramedic, it is not the the end of the road. Paramedics can go on to attend Physician's Assistant school (PA), become a Hospital Admin, or even attend Medical school and earn an MD. Or, they can choose to stay in the EMS system and become a supervisor, educator, or dispatcher, along with many more. Paramedics can even take a couple additional courses to earn a license in hospital jobs such as emergency room technicians or radiology technicians. EMS is both the foundation and doorway to a multitude of health careers.

Levels of EMS
Simplified down, there are three main levels of emergency medical personnel (at the patient encounter level). The most basic is an EMT-B aka an emergency medical technician - basic. This certification requires a 6-month long course and passing a board exam from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
Next, is the Advanced EMT or AEMT. They provide advanced aid, including inserting IVs and intubating patients.
Last but definitely not least, is the paramedic. They provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) including administering injections, medications, and advanced respiratory aid. To become a paramedic, a lot more training and schooling is required.

EMS Education
Sadly, because EMS is a relatively new addition to education systems, only a handful of colleges offer a bachelor's major. The University of New Mexico, University of Washington, and UCLA are some of the few that offer a paramedic program. Emergency Medical Technician programs are more commonly offered across the country, including at Central New Mexico Community College.

What is Emergency Medical Services?
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a system of services aimed toward providing emergency medical care. Involving multiple levels of authority, various degrees of certified providers, and systems tailored uniquely from city to city; the system is much more complex than simply an ambulance. Operating between the crossroads of health care, public safety, and public health, our world would not be the same without these first responders.
