what is an RSS feed and why does AO3 have them?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and the word syndication here is referring to broadcasting or transferring or otherwise sharing information. I first encountered it as a way to aggregate all of the news sites and blogs I wanted to read that were scattered all over the internet.

You might already be familiar with tumblr blogs that start with ao3feed - these are automated blogs that create a new post every time a work is posted in the feed(s) that they track. You can follow those tumblr blogs and learn about new works that way. They've subscribed to the RSS feed so that you don't have to.

If you wish that you could get push notifications from AO3 on your phone instead? The RSS feed will allow you to do that. You just need to get an account with an RSS reader first. Here are a few that are free:

Inoreader 

They each have slightly different features, so depending on the search and filter options you want or how you like your information displayed, you might like one better than the others. All three work on the web, on iOS, and on Android.

Once you have a feed reader, tap on the RSS Feed button at the top of the tag results page that you want to get notifications for and open up the XML file. If it downloads instead, try opening in a new tab or just copying the link address. You'll want to grab a url that looks like this: https://archiveofourown.org/tags/9835/feed.atom (this is the url for Kirk/Spock, if you're curious)

That feed.atom ending on the url is what you're looking for. When you open your RSS reader and create a new feed, you can use that url to set it up.

Once it's set up, you'll be able to see everything currently available in that tab, listed out in your reader. Just like the ao3feed tumblr blogs, the reader will show you the title, author, summary and tags for each fic, and then it will provide you with a link to read the work on AO3.

It will also notify you every time a new work is posted to that tag. You can adjust your notifications to suit you.

Not every tag on AO3 has an RSS feed, but it's worth checking out if you've never tried it before.

The Causal Chain And Why Your Story Needs It

The most obnoxious thing my writing teacher taught me every story needed, that I absolutely loathed studying in the moment and that only later, after months of resisting and fighting realized she was right, was something called the causal chain.

Simply put, the causal chain is the linked cause-and-effect that must logically connect every event, reaction, and beat that takes place in your story to the ones before and after.

The Causal Chain is exhausting to go through. It is infuriating when someone points out that an event or a character beat comes out of nowhere, unmoored from events around it.

It is profoundly necessary to learn and include because a cause-and-effect chain is what allows readers to follow your story logically which means they can start anticipating what happens next, which is what is required for a writer to be able to build suspense and cognitively engage the audience, to surprise them, and to not infuriate them with random coincidences that hurt or help the characters in order to clumsily advance the author's goals.

By all means, write your story as you want to write it in the first draft, and don't worry about this principle too much. This is an editing tool, not a first draft tool. But one of the first things you should do when retroactively begin preparing your story to be read by others is going step by step through each event and confirming that a previous event leads to it and that subsequent events are impacted by it on the page.

On the one hand, deciding to do a herringbone pattern probably increased the floor renovation project time by 4-5 hours. On the other hand, my library floor is going to look bomb as hell (just as soon as I run to Home Depot for more flooring because I ran out 😬). We’ll do black grout in here as well. If your plot feels flat, STUDY it! Your story might be lacking...

Stakes - What would happen if the protagonist failed? Would it really be such a bad thing if it happened?

Thematic relevance - Do the events of the story speak to a greater emotional or moral message? Is the conflict resolved in a way that befits the theme?

Urgency - How much time does the protagonist have to complete their goal? Are there multiple factors complicating the situation?

Drive - What motivates the protagonist? Are they an active player in the story, or are they repeatedly getting pushed around by external forces? Could you swap them out for a different character with no impact on the plot? On the flip side, do the other characters have sensible motivations of their own?

Yield - Is there foreshadowing? Do the protagonist's choices have unforeseen consequences down the road? Do they use knowledge or clues from the beginning, to help them in the end? Do they learn things about the other characters that weren't immediately obvious?

SlickWrite: Completely free; online. Checks grammar, punctuation, flow, and writing style according to different settings (including fiction writing).

ProWritingAid: [RECOMMENDED] One of the most thorough online proofreader I've ever used. Although when using a free account gives extremely thorough feedback, with +20 different in-depth reports, for only the first 500 words. However, you can earn a premium account license (for a year or for life) if you get 10 or 20 new users signing up for free; (if you wouldn't mind doing so using the link above and help me earn mine, please). The settings allow you to check your writing according to your needs, from general to formal to creative. It has a bonus that you can check depending on the genre you're writing. For example, in creative, you can choose romance or sci-fiction (there are 14 sub-genre in total). And just like google docs, you can share a document, and people can view, comment or edit it too.

LanguageTool: [RECOMMENDED] Another excellent proofreader. It also has a word limit in free accounts, but if you use the add-on for Google Docs, it counts each page as a new document, so hitting the word limit is nearly impossible. It helps you to rewrite a sentence (3 a day), even if it doesn't raise any flags; it's very useful for when your sentence is grammatically correct, but it doesn't feel quite right.

Grammarly, Hemingway Editor: No so great, but they do the basic job.

DIY Side Table

Finding a simple, modular piece of furniture that is reasonably priced but also well made can be hard sometimes. IKEA provides some decent options, but sometimes you just want something made out of beautiful, sturdy, solid wood. Thankfully, designer Silvia Song has created a great tutorial for a simple wood side table with a sliding drawer. If you’re interested in getting into woodworking and furniture making but don’t know where to start, this is the tutorial for you. She’s made a lovely piece with clean lines and a basic form that requires only a few tools. If you want a fun building project for a fall weekend, you should definitely try it out. I chose this project as an exercise to see if I could design and build a simple drawer unit in the spirit of Enzo Mari’s Autoprogettazione (self-design). I wanted to use just a few simple hand tools and assemble each part by cross cutting only off-the-shelf lumber. The biggest challenge was to find a way to work with the actual dimensions of lumber to come up with puzzle-like pieces simple enough for a novice to build, but not lacking in versatility. My intentions were to keep things as simple and organic as possible, but you can easily personalize it by staining or painting the wood. I really enjoyed designing it, and I hope you enjoy building it! — Silvia

Materials

lumber: (3) 1” x 6” x 6’, (1) 1” x 4” x 6’, (1) 1” x 3” x 6’, (1) 1” x 2” x 6’

box of #16 x 1 1/4″ wire nails

Instructions

1. Let’s begin by building the frame. Cut lumber to the dimensions below using a right angle tool (engineered square or 90-degree triangle) and lightly sand the edges.

(6) — 1” x 2” x 11” corner supports (for lateral support)

(4) — 1” x 6” x 18” top and bottom panel

(4) — 1” x 6″ x 20” side panel

2. Side panel assembly: A minimum of four nails per 1 x 2 support is required. It is crucial to nail directly into the center of the 1 x 2s. These pieces will support the frame laterally once it is upright.

3. There should be a 2 1/2″ space between the first and second 1 x 2s as shown in the photo. Add an extra 1/16″ to allow the drawer to slide easily in and out.

4. Let’s go ahead and complete the frame by assembling the top and bottom panels as well. Place (2) 1″ x 6″ x 18″ planks and nail them directly into the 1 x 2 supports. Make sure the nails are driven directly into the center of the supports.

You should now have a completed frame that looks like this:

5. To assemble the drawer, cut lumber to the dimensions specified below.

(2) — 1” x 6“ x 15” front and back planks

(2) — 1” x 4” x 9.5” side planks (one on each side)

(2) — 1” x 3” x 11” outermost side planks

(2) — 1” x 4” x 15” bottom end planks

(1) — 1” x 3” x 15” bottom middle plank

6. To assemble the bottom of the drawer, use (1) 1″ x 3″ x 15″ plank sandwiched between (2) 1″ x 4″ x 15″ planks. Place the 1″ x 4″ x 9.5″ side planks on both ends of the bottom planks and nail them down securely.

Here is what the completed side looks like:

7. Take (1) 1″ x 3″ x 11″ outermost side plank and align as shown in the photo. This will create a lip underneath the front and back panels to allow the drawer to be pulled out.

8. Then center the piece along the innermost side plank so that the edge of the 1 x 3 is flush with the front and back planks, and nail them down. Repeat for the opposite side.

Here is the finished drawer assembly:

9. Finally, slide the drawer into the frame.

Anon, when I first saw this ask, I thought it was going to be one of those mixers of nice, traditional sounds, like rain or a coffeeshop. And it is! And there's lofi hiphop, my favorite sound to write to! Which means this is legitimately an excellent tool for writers, and I love you for introducing it to me.

So, I've been listening to these stanford lectures on human behaviour.

To give background to the stuff they'll talk about later, so you'll fully understand it, they give you a crash course in molecular genetics, ethology, evolutionary genetics, neurology, endocrinology and the limbic system in general plus a few other things, and guys? My dudes? Friends? It's rough.

Did you hate terfs! First, good, secondly when you really really get down to it they have no fucking idea what they're talking about. Like, not even remotely. I know each of their points can be show down easily but their approach is soassuvly removed from what's actually going on in our bodies. Them trying to define a man and woman is like which cloud is a boy shape and which one is a girl shape and trying to enforce those rules when we're actually talking about currents in the ocean. It's vaguely related but also absolutely not.

Did you already hate the diet industry/culture? Well get ready to be validated as fuck when you find out the long term effects of dieting. And I'm not just talking about its affect on you. Dieting literally fucks up in GENERATIONAL ways. Oh did your grandmother diet a bit during her second trimester when she was carrying your mother? Well congratulations, there's a very high chance your mother, you, your kids and your grandkids will have your genes altered to cause you to gain and hold weight incase your family line starves again at some point. And that's just the surface level shit

Did you worry that having anxious/abusive parents means general anxiety may have passed to you? Well guess what fucko, not only has it passed to you but its now potentially written into your fucking genes and on top of that your kids will probably get it too.

There's so many other wild things too that are just fucking 'turned on' or even 'turned off' forever sometimes.

That sometimes is bolded for a reason. Cuz were all so crazy crazy different. And I mean that down to the molecular level. Like, it's to such a degree that I'm shocked that stupid everyday shit like paracetamol work on so many people.

We are each a jackson pollock painting of inherited traits and environmental factors that have affected us from multiple generations before we were even born, the paint is still wet, it's not going to dry, and the painting has been scrunched up into a ball and tossed into a washing machine.
