THE NIGHT WATCH
Be careful, the night watches back.
Liviana always volunteered to do a night watch while the crew slept in the cursed island. She's unsure if she's seeing these shadows in her dreams or in reality. Or both. Here's her theme during her night watches. :)

really, all Clea did to Painted Clea was make her doppelganger accurate
she made Painted Clea a Paintress, first of all - the most important facet of herself, of course
she put Painted Clea to work, work, work, work for the family
she took Painted Clea from her loved ones and stashed her away, alone except for a ghost, in a broken-down empty mansion
she made Painted Clea an empty husk of a woman with her life torn apart not by the loss of her brother, but by the bastardization of his memory
(but even Clea couldn't completely erase the spirit inside of a woman screaming for freedom and self-determination)
didn't Aline want realism? well, there it is

Characters that are liars who come up with fake stories that are so close to the real story that talking about the fake still helps soothe them. Love those little guys to death.

I've always really liked this line from Slay the Princess, in part because it pairs so well with the game's design that is focused on exploration of the self through the other. It's a theme I've loved to use for years now, especially with Callaoife in almost all her iterations, though it is lacking in her original. At least it used to be. Now with The Curse which feeds on emotional distress tying her back to Pyre, she's being forced to look at how the consequences of her actions are playing out for him and seeing that even though it's the same curse, it looks different for both of them, with him ever-burning and her growing wings. Next will be seeing the differences in how both of them handle the curse. He tried to dampen it and control it, she tried to cut it out. Neither worked. Though his worked for longer. Maybe after that, this one will finally see the self in the other and find connection through that. Or maybe she'll go decide that's what really wrong is she tried to help him when he needed it. That she should never help anyone else ever again, and that feelings are the worst. (not possible)

I want to add that I hate the lyrics of "Love Story" that goes:
"Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter
And my daddy said 'Stay away from Juliet!'"
i don't understand 😭
juliet's an adulteress now?
I don’t believe tsw*ft is a revolutionary or even interesting artist but she *is* the only artist who has her own folder on my phone dedicated to lyrics that make me incandescent with rage so from a perverse conceptual perspective I guess something is working

E33 "True Ending"
HEAVY SPOILERS AHEAD. WHY ARE YOU READING THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE GAME? GO PLAY.
So I've been looking around for which would be the *canon* ending for Expedition 33, and everyone pretty much seems to agree that Verso's ending seems most likely... But how about this? How about *both endings* are canon?
Wait wait, before you think I'm just smoking a lot of copium, (I might be) just hear me out.
So, I've been playing New Game +, and I'm starting to notice everything more clearer now that I'm replaying the game, and one of the things that stuck out to me the most were the instances of Maelle's Nightmare(s). How does she come to know what will be revealed later in the game in a dream? (Gustave's (implied) death and what happened with Expedition Zero with Verso?) Then I started looking at Maelle/Alicia as a character. Every character is capable of healing, even Verso our immortal wet rag who craves the end of the canvas of a character is capable of healing. But Maelle? All of her skills borders on destruction in some way, even her support skill Égide protects her allies at the cost of her own health.
It seems so in line with Alicia to take the path of self-flagellation for the grief subjected onto her entire family (which wasn't her fault but she believes it to be), so in order to keep reliving the nightmare, every time she feels too comfortable to live in the canvas, she reboots the entire canvas right back to the time of her birth as Maelle. She relives the same times as she was jumping family to family as an orphan, relives the same death of Gustave, her father/brother figure who she had bonded well with, and so much more terrible things she had to shoulder on her own, all for the sake of "repentance" that she may feel obligated to subject herself.
Before you go, "but Alicia isn't a talented Paintress! Aline found all her works to be subpar and only hung one small painting of Alicia's, remember?" Yeah, maybe! Maybe in the past! But you can already see that even in her own ending, she managed to repaint EVERYBODY back to life... Even Sciel's husband, who you never get to even see in the game's playthrough. Lumiere is painted right back to its former state even after it was completely battered after Renoir's attack. It's also probable the first playthrough you're playing isn't Alicia's first time rebooting the canvas, and when you boot up NG+, it falls in line with Alicia reliving her time in the canvas. I think the only time Verso's Ending truly happens is when Alicia learns to finally let go and lose to Verso. (I mean, girl is really OP, even if you build up Verso to be some immortal cheese build, she can always out damage him with sheer brute force. She even knows how to GOMMAGE people out of the canvas if she wants to.) In a way, this is her way of finally letting go of her grief, self-hatred, and moving on from her coping fantasies.
The memorial scene probably happens way later once Aline, Renoir, and Alicia recovered well enough together to attend after their time spent in Verso's canvas. Or I'm just trying to figure out the reason why there's a NG+ that you can keep playing over and over, when you are already god-like by that point and you can clear the entire game in 2hrs.
