My Year in Review: Blogging, Cats & Coaching
My Year in Review: Blogging, Cats & Coaching
2014: The Year in Review. Image: KNSWB
To say it’s been a while is kind of an understatement. Regular visitors to the website will have noted my absence from blogging for much of the past year, which there are good reasons for. In the past year, I have changed jobs, added to my cat collection, started life coach training, worked on healthy eating and prioritised my health and well-being and of…

Colourised X-rays can produce stunning images. This one is by artist Nick Veasey. Image: Nick Veasey.
A number of years ago, Arie van’t Riet, a Dutch physicist specialising in radiation physics began experimenting with X-ray photography as a way to better teach radiographers how to use X-ray machines. These experiments resulted in a fantastic series of intensely detailed colourised X-rays featuring both everyday and exotic animals, flora and fauna, causing us to look at them with entirely new eyes.
We tend to assume that science and art are two distinctly separate entities, whose paths seldom, if ever cross. In school we are told that there are scientists, and there are artists, and are encouraged to imagine that they exist in two different worlds. Science can be beautiful, and just as visually stunning as any artist’s landscape or sculpture. van’t Riet’s collection of images draw us in. They seem almost alien, yet have a strange familiarity for most of us – like we’re looking at a stranger but see the echo of an old friend in the lines of their face. See the collection below.

Want to Achieve Something Great in Your Lifetime? Watch This Video!
Image: Wishbowl
Short and sweet, I came across this beautiful short video bursting with positivity and the possibility that everyday life has to offer us and just had to share it. Too often we get bogged down with the anxieties and stresses of everyday modern life, and are too easily convinced that we can’t live the life we always dreamed of, of attain the happiness that so frequently seems out…

REVIEW: Race, Cruelty & Triumph of the Human Spirit in 12 Years a Slave
This image perfectly illustrates the menacing nature of the relationship between Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character, and Michael Fassbender’s in 12 Years a Slave. Image: Deadline.com
Systematic degradation, enforced labour, rape culture, humiliation and harsh living conditions – the legacy of the slave trade in the United States is not a pretty picture, and British director Steve McQueen’s…

REVIEW: Scandinavian Crime Drama The Bridge (Bron, Broen), Season 1
Image: ZDF
Scandinavian crime drama is big business at the moment, and is in relatively high demand from European and USA markets. Shows such as Those Who Kill, The Killing, Wallander and Borgen (although the latter is more political than crime drama), have been making waves internationally for many years, which is a testament to their quality. Subtitled foreign language drama has never done well…
