Daryl smiled for the first time all day, “Hell yeah.” He didn’t like the idea of walkers poaching his hunt - again - but he and Eric were smarter and faster than any walker. It wasn’t difficult to find where the hog had disturbed the ground. Daryl waved Eric over to the tracks and started following them away into the trees. “Let’s pick it up.”
The smile was something Eric had never seen on Daryl’s face. It was good. Very few people smiled anymore even with the safety of a safe zone. At first Eric thought them to be ungrateful for what they had but they he grew up a bit more. He nodded and continued forward until he saw a little more blood, not enough to smell, but enough to notice it. Then he saw it. It was injured and there was no walkers around. “Let’s get it,” he said raising up his weapon.

It had started to become a tradition that Aaron bring things home on a run and store them in the garage of the house he now had. It quickly started to look a mess with all the little trinkets he bought back and the license plates on the wall even though there hadn’t been many on his walls just yet. It just made the house feel more like his instead of living in some strangers home which was the furthest thing that he wanted. Although there would be times that he was lonely it was something he fast got used to. If anything, Aaron was just happy to be in a safe zone and being able to bring people into it. It just made the place become a community instead of some regulated zone.
He’d just finished putting up a new license plate when he heard the knock on his door. The first thought he had was that it was Eric but he thought that his old friend would be busy settling in and instead thought his visitor would be Deanna or Reg. Opening the door he was surprised, and pleasantly so, that it was Eric. “Hey there,” he smiled leaning against the door but didn’t say anything else while Eric spoke. He felt bad for him and once he was finished moved out of the way to invite Eric in. “Of course it is. Come on in. I have some tea that I can make. Want a cup?”
The way Aaron leaned against the door intrigued Eric in a way that had not happened since the NGO when they had been practically insperable. Nothing romantic or sexual had happened but at the same time he thought that there had always been the possibility of it which meant quite a lot in itself to Eric but not enough to leave him hanging around like a lost puppy. It was so typical of Aaron to be so welcoming, Eric had told him in the past that he thought the other man would even be like that to strangers. Eric was not as trusting as Aaron even though he’d had it a bit easier in coming out and trusting people with revealing that part of him. “I haven’t had tea since before this thing started. Isn’t kinda like gold dust now or is that coffee?”
He looked around and saw some licence plates on the walls, not many of them but enough to see it was some kind of collection which was still quite strange. “Are these places you’ve been or are you just collecting ‘em as you find ‘em? I look for things like alcohol when I’m out. Scotch is almost impossible but I really can’t think of the day when there is none left.”

“There’s more up there,” Daryl gestured to the break in the trees where the hog had gotten enough momentum to charge him. “Don’t know if walkers can smell it but it was enough t’ fuck me up pretty good.” As they approached the actual sight a larger amount could be seen. There was no great puddle of red, but a little circle of disturbed dirt was wet with it, as well as a few smears where Daryl’s hand had pushed against the ground. The man spit into the dirt and felt his side ache again. “Gonna make sausage out'a that thing when I find it.”
Eric’s head silently bobbed up to where Daryl gestured and saw the break in the trees and the small bits of blood. Instead of talking he watched the break and listened to Daryl. “If they could smell it then they might have found this hog before us.” The idea of bringing this hog into town and for people to eat was just too much to waste by not giving it a chance. “So you should, that thing got you good. Only be right for you to get the first bite outta it.”

“Realistic people that don’t want to see everyone dead.” She said bluntly.

“Here,” he said handing her a bottle of whisky under the table, “that helps me a little. Might with you.”

The silence was a good thing for what Eric knew about Woodbury and its leader but with silence also came uncertainty so her remained mute while his leader thought things through about his idea. Was it the best idea? No. Yet it would help in the long run.
“Caution signs wont do shit, sir. We need some kind of fence. We use the crane as it is to lift them so we could still use that along with the fences. Leaving a portion open would still be good but it would need to be like a small gate. That way the risk is almost gone and you still get the biters.”
-
Remaining silent for a moment he thought over the idea a few times. It did seem logical to make the pits safer, but at the same time he imagined that as much as it would keep out the living it would end up doing the same for the dead. Chewing at the inside of his cheek for a moment he placed his hands on his waist.
“A fence won’t do the pits any good if we block ‘em off. We create a fence then we might as well not have the pits at all. Caution signs would be better than fences since the dead don’t read. But if ya have a better idea on what ‘t do with the fences about maybe leavin’ a portion open then I’m listenin’.”

Eric saw the blood droplets on the ground just as Daryl spotted them and looked around in hopes to find this hog. It would make everyone in the town happy that they could still bring in some meat and made him feel a little better about doing something properly outside the wall. “It isn’t much blood. Think that’ll attract ‘em all the way here?”
-
With a point of his finger Daryl said “Over there,” and headed for the trees. He could see the droplets of his own blood on the ground, making the trail back towards where the hog had attacked him. Daryl pointed them out to Eric. If he indeed had some tracking experience, it should be easy for the two of them to find it again. “Better hope the smell'a blood didn’t attracted any walkers.”

"No, it isn’t but who are we to break the pretense?” Not normal but as close as they would ever get.
-
Maggie looked at the man, before back at everyone. “This, this isn’t normal. Not anymore.”

The home Aaron showed him was not what Eric had expected from a safe zone. Being so used to tents as a luxury this was the furthest thing he had ever expected from any place in the new world. And it felt like the most strangest thing in the world even though he had only been outside the safe zone for a few months, almost a year. He was left alone in his house which didn’t do well for the mans thoughts as soon as the night came so did the thoughts of his friends that he felt he had abandoned for this safe zone. They knew the roads. They knew how to survive but that didn’t quell the guilt that Eric was feeling.
A little later in the night he was still trying to get used to having so much space but to no avail. It was too big, too peaceful and too lonely. Neither helped how he felt about it all so he turned to his bag pack, the only thing he had with him in the world, and pulled out a bottle of scotch that he had been slowly nursing and refilling with any alcohol he could fine. It was good how easy it came to find booze. Everyone seemed to get the main supplies and leave, for the most part, the alcohol behind. Taking a large swig of the scotch, Eric looked out onto the street as if he was studying it as hard as he could with a bottle in his hand but that didn’t deter his mind or sight. It made him think about this place and the people in it. More specifically one person.
Deciding not to think much more, Eric headed straight out of his door and to Aaron’s house. It was one of the first things he had remembered about the layout of the place. It wasn’t long before he was standing on Aaron’s porch. and knocking on his door. As soon it opened Eric looked straight at Aaron already feeling a sense of familiarity and some of the unease start to fall away already. “You said come over anytime. I hope its okay I’m here. I just..I couldn’t be in that house alone.”
Meeting Again

Aaron had never been thing kind of nervous in a long time, it felt so strange but like such a luxury as well. And so trivial. He had no doubt that Eric would be accepted and not just because he had already spoken briefly with Deanna and what accepting Eric could do for the community. In his mind, Aaron had already picked out a job for Eric but he wasn’t really sure if Eric would want to go and recruit. In truth, Aaron was torn between it. He knew Eric was good at construction. The time they had spent together in the NGO proved that and the recruiter knew that his friend was more than capable.
Seeing the smile on Eric’s face as the man came out of Deann’s office. The meaning behind it was clear as anything and Aaron couldn’t help himself by wrapping his arms tight around Eric in some kind of accomplished happiness. He’d got in and that was the best news he had since the world went to crap. Looking up from the embrace he saw Deanna by the door giving the two of them a curious look but it made Aaron blush so he stepped out of it and looked at Eric. “I told you that you would get in. I knew it. I always said you should believe me more.”
The next thing Aaron would do with any recruit is to show the home they would live in. It was always one of the most impressive part of Alexandria and one of Aaron’s favorite parts because the look on the new members faces was something to remember. “This is yours. I know its big and we have them all to spare but hopefully there will come a time that we don’t.” He looked at the house, it was bare but had enough in for Eric to start making it his own, “if you need me I;m just two doors down. Come anytime.”

“Maybe we can build a fence? Our community has walls and everything so we COULD do it. It could do so much good for everyone and would reduce the fatalities. All we need is some supplies. Think we can spare ‘em?”
-
“There’s not much else we can do for ‘em. We do somethin’ ‘t ‘em then we won’t get the biters. Jus’ be more careful around ‘em. That’s all.”

He was new to the saviour camp and so far it had been going well but his peace had been interrupted by some kind of commotion. The crowd he followed led him to see the leader and all his wives at some kind of demonstration. He was quite back from the commotion so didn’t hear but he did see the iron going onto a mans face.

"I went straight to my family home after we got back.” Eric’s parents had died a few years earlier, but he still had the house and made good of use of it when he was home from work. “I’m hoping it’s still there and untouched but I’m not that naive to think that is even a possibility. You should have seen it.” The gates to Alexandria looked sturdy and Eric’s hazel eyes lingered on them for quite a long time before his feet had moved him into the protected area.
Hesitant hands gave away his weapons despite not wanting to let any of them go. In half his mind, Eric wanted to keep a small dagger but instead gave it in. If this place was going to be anything for him then he knew that he would need to trust it.
The interview was easy. Deanna asked simple questions to begin with and although some had been personal, Eric understood why she asked them so answered honestly. At the end of it she shook his hand, it reminded him too much of a job interview and remarked how well she believed he would fit into Alexandria and with a smile on his face he went to Aaron and told him the good news.
Meeting Again

“It was purely by chance,” he said thinking about the memory, “and not long after we arrived back from the NGO. I was looking for my mom and when she wasn’t home I went to find anyone I knew. It was a long shot but it lead me to Alexandria and then to you. I guess I did end up finding someone even if it did take a while.” Slightly cheesy but he was only saying what he thought. It was a kind of relief to find someone he used to know. “The interview is really simple. Just be honest with Deanna and I’m sure you will get in.”
The gates to Alexandria had long been a sign of home for Aaron and he hoped it would be the same for Eric. Once they opened he led his old friend to the armoury and told Eric to deposit his weapons as well as putting his own back in storage. Thankfully, Deanna was already in her home which meant the interview would take place as soon as they got there. Outside the doors of her room, Aaron waited and before Eric went in, gave him a hug. “Good luck, I’ll be waiting out here for you.” He wanted to do more but it wasn’t the time for it so instead Aaron waited for Eric to be done.
