I keep seeing this sentiment on social media. And I think I even made a post saying people in the military can disobey any unlawful or unconstitutional order.
But then I watched this video by an actual military lawyer. And it seems the US kind of shut that shit down.
youtube
Activism within the US military is not really a thing. With the exception of obvious war crimes, it doesn't seem like there is any wiggle room to disobey an order.
As far as my research has shown, there is not a single service member who has ever successfully defended themselves in court martial for refusing to obey an unlawful or unconstitutional order.
If you are going to ask folks in the military to disobey orders, it's important to know there will very likely be serious consequences. Some might be willing to take that on鈥攖o face court martial and military prison. That would be a very brave act.
I think when people suggest this type of military activism, they need to acknowledge the consequences of doing so. It's essentially asking a lot of poor kids who were predatorially recruited and told they could escape their poverty to go to military prison.
You can't just say "the order was unlawful" and be on your merry way.
I really don't have a solution or a suggestion here. This just seems like a crappy situation all around. I guess I just want to make sure that if people suggest this, they don't leave out the part where you'll probably go to prison. People should know the consequences of taking this risk.

Hi, I was wondering if I could ask your opinion about something? So me and some other blogs are trying to revive and reminisce about 2010s tumblr and a major part of that era, at least in the US, was a kind of anglophilia due to the height of One Direction and superwholock. (Sort of like how anime fans are with Japan sometimes.) And a part of that was Union Jacks on everything from socks to phone cases to tapestries. Recently, I've heard in passing that the Union Jack is considered a right wing dog whistle in the British Isles. However, when I try to learn more about it, I've been admittedly getting a bit tripped up on political intricacies I'm not adequately informed about. I was hoping you might point me in the right direction about whether or not it should be left in the past? Is it offensive? If so, why, and how bad is it considered to be?
The Union Jack is the current flag of the United Kingdom, and a lot of brands have incorporated it into their branding.
Personally a Union Jack branding is enough for me not to touch anything that bears it. I don't want a Union Jack on my clothes because of its unionist associations - I find it incredibly crass, especially when you see people wearing clothes covered in them.
For example, this is current Labour MP and UK Gov's Scottish Secretary of State, Ian Murray wearing a Union Jack blazer during the Scottish independence referendum.
Besides all that Union Jack has been referred to as 'the Butcher's Apron' in Scotland, Ireland and Wales where it's often seen as an inherently political flag - In contrast to American's who tend to associate it with Doctor Who/Sherlock and the concept of 'cosy britishness'.
There's probably a sizeable amount of former British colonies that also have a bit more of a reaction to the flag. But that may have faded in time after gaining their independence.
TL;DR While many in the UK would like to pretend it's not the case, the flag carries its own political meaning in the UK. I understand it's part of a global branding campaign -- Just don't expect me to engage with it in that case馃憤

a few process pictures from a commission, a copy of this one:

it should turn out a little different, colour-wise. I wanted the moon fox鈥檚 tail to disappear into the background a little at the tip
(and here鈥檚 the back)
