rory’s lips flickered into a brief smile at her attempt to make light of the matter, before she pressed her lips together into a hard line. rory shook her head slowly at the woman’s question, “it’s just a dream. the people in my life, it’s not an easy time for a lot of them them and i don’t to burden them with further more.” rory shrugged her shoulders - it wasn’t the first time rory had let herself run on fumes. “how bad can a dream get, you know?”
Essie was glad when she spotted the tiny flicker of a smile, however brief it was - it was something and she was proud to have caused it even if it didn’t last long. Her own head tilts slightly as she listens, nodding slightly before sitting back, “I get it, I know that feeling well - not wanting to burden the people in your life with something that doesn’t truly feel all that important or urgent.” She shrugged and shook her head slightly, “You’d be surprised how much dreams can effect you, even if its just causing your sleep to be messed up - that adds up. Well anyways, ify ou want I’m a decent listener”

“Yeah I’m a big ol meanie. What cruel fate that I’m buying you lunch.” Kate said sarcastically. As they walked, she listened to the story, well as best as she could from Essie’s mumbling. “Something about a phone is what I heard.” She said.
“So mean.” Essie sticks her tongue out but grins all the same, “You’re gonna make me actually tell the whole thing... aren’t you?” She mumbled but sighed and straightened her back, preparing herself to actually tell the full thing. “Okay so. I stole my Moms phone and texted this girl she’d been talking to a lot.. asking to meet me somewhere and... yeah.. thats how it started..”

rory shook her head a little as she ducked her head. she peered briefly at the young woman, touched at her concern - it wouldn’t be the worst thing, to tell an impartial party what she felt, what’s been going on. “i guess…” rory started slowly as she leaned against the table, “i had this dream, a couple months back. it was a good dream, but it became a recurring one, and it always, always…turned into a nightmare. so more nightmares, less sleep, and with my job…” rory shook her head slowly, “i’m a night shift nurse in the emergency room. so it’s tedious. you put all those together and you get..” rory tapped her temple lightly as she leaned with resign against the table. she couldn’t think of any possible solutions beside it will pass, like it always does.
Essie shifted slightly, glancing back at the other woman curiously - but her concern on her own face was obvious. Stranger or not, it was hard to not see that something was going on and Essie well - she had a good heart, as much as it might land her in trouble sometimes - she cared and that was that. So when the other woman started to speak, of course she listened genuinely.
A small frown tugging on her face, “I know those kinds of dreams quite well - we’re not exactly on good terms though. I mean - turning into a nightmare.. how rude.” she offered a small smile and shrug before frowning once more - actually trying to think for a moment, “It doesn’t sound good though, have you spoken about this dream/nightmare to anyone in your life?” She debated if there was a reason behind it - in her experience, talking with her mother helped solve why they were happening. She did also want to help this woman.

Kate smiled as she got a laugh out of the younger. “Now I see why people do it. It’s more fun when you’re not the one in pain.” She commented as she patted her on the shoulder.
“Good cause we gonna get you some good grub.” Kate said as she walked with Esmeralda. “So what can you tell me about this story of yours?” She asked. Kate gave her a smile.
Essie gave a small pout at the comment, looking back at Kate with full on ‘sad puppy eyes’, “Meanie Kate. Super mean.” she was mostly just playing but the pout part was real as she gently kept an arm around her injured ribs.
“Okay sweet - gotta love a free meal even if I have to talk about embarrassing things.” Her smile back in place as she kept up, her arm still in place as she gave a small groan, “Well - it started with stealing my moms phone and texting this girl she’s been kinda into...” she mumbled this, eyes avoiding the other woman as she spoke about it. Damn this would be more embarrassing than she expected.

Taking a sip of her hot cocoa, Marceline stayed silent as the younger spoke. She immediately knew the word Essie hadn’t said. Weak. A feeling she knew all to well and one she hide when she had her heart broken.
“Don’t let your drink get cold.” Marceline commented as she took a sip. There was plenty she could say, plenty of stuff she herself has heard. Biting her lip for a second, she let out a soft sigh.
“There’s any number of things I could do from this moment. Dress up in my Owl suit and give your ex a scare. Make a surprise F.B.I. visit to your ex. Hell I could just be pissed off family and yell at her.” Marceline said. “All of those options would make me feel better, but I would be missing the best option of all.” She said as she took another sip of her drink.
“I wouldn’t be here for you. You’re hurting and I need to be here, to be your mother, and to help you.” She explained as she sat down her mug. “When Lena broke up with me, I felt hurt, I felt anger and most of all I felt weak.” She said.
“I was heartbroken, I was angry at myself for trusting someone, and I generally didn’t feel like I was strong enough to be a vigilante anymore.” Marceline explained. “I didn’t want to admit I was weak, hell some days I still don’t.” She added with a shrug.
Walking over to Esmeralda, Marceline kneeled down to look at her. “You’re heartbroken, I get it. You don’t want that same pain to hit me so you stole my phone and met up with Zari. You were trying to save me.” She said softly.
“You are my daughter, and I am here for you when you want to talk. When you’re ready you can tell me what happened. You can cry, you can yell, you can break something if it will make you feel better.” She said with a small smile. “You know of my heart break, of my therapy sessions, and you know that I’ve felt weak. Yet you always think of me as a strong mother.” Marceline said.
“You’re my strong daughter, you always will be. No matter how weak you feel, how hurt you are are, or how much you screw up. Nothing you do could ever make me love you less for being human.” Marceline explained. Standing back up she gently patted Esmeralda on the shoulder with a smile.
“So, how about you get some marshmallows in that hot cocoa, sit on the couch and binge a show like Twilight Zone, Xena or X-Files while wrapped up in a blanket?” She asked as she picked up her drink.
As soon as she could, she moved forward - gently grasping her own cup - her hands absorbing the warmth from the cup for a moment before taking her first sip. The familiar comfort of the warm chocolatey liquid made her eyes burn slightly - a familiar feeling of tears forming, it tasted just like the ones her mother made for her back on her earth. Marceline would never truly know just how much she was like her counterpart sometimes, like in this moment. It was as if she was talking with her mother and not the Marceline from another earth.
It was both heartbreaking and comforting for sure. A small chuckle bubbled from her mouth at what Marceline said - yet again reminded of her mother as she shook her head. She certainly had the ‘mom-thing’ down even if she didn’t realise it. Right down to the describing of how Marceline felt during her own heart break. But the reminder mostly made her feel a tiny bit glad she had at least tried to protect her mom, she never wanted Marceline to feel like that again.
“I was... trying to save you. To save your heart from being broken again.” The words were so softly spoken, yet in the quiet moment in the room - they were easily able to be heard. She felt the tears prickling once more and took a deep breath - trying to keep them hidden. She knew it was okay - it was okay to cry - to be upset, Marceline had even said so - but she didn’t want to, not right now.
She wanted to talk though, to talk about what had happened - about what had led to her landing injured the way she had - to what made her want to come back here, to leave her friends behind - to stay here instead with her Mom. But - for now the other option was feeling a heck of a lot better, and she could always talk more later - maybe after an episode or two. “You know my vote is for Xena right?” A tiny hint of a smile tugged at her lips as she shifted, glancing back up before standing - placing her own cup down, taking Marcelines and placing it beside her own before her arms wrapped around her Mother in a tight hug.

rory’s eyes fell down to the woman’s hand as she retracted it quickly, and she sighed. “i’m sorry, i didn’t mean to snap.” rory didn’t rush through the apology, courtesy of her pounding head, but she did mean it. “i’m fine, it’s nothing. stress headache, i guess.”
Essie clenched her hand slightly, her head tilting as she peered back at the woman - a little concerned when she apologised. Sure it was good she did, but also there seemed to be something more going on. At the mention of a headache she nodded her head slowly, softening her voice when she spoke, “Ahh, I know those well - is there - I mean, a reason for the stress? Or just normal things going on? You don’t have to tell me of course - but, I’ve been told I’m a good listener and stuff before.”

“I think I’m a little lost.” She said, looking around before turning back to the other woman. “Do you have any idea where I could find the X’Hal foundation meeting?”
“I can do what I can to help you out.” She offered a small smile, nodding her head before thinking for a moment, “That sounds familiar - Do you know where its being held at all?”

“No kidding. Can’t tell you how much I hate broken ribs. Can’t ever do anything and it is so boring.” Kate said. “and people always try to make you laugh when you have broken ribs. Like seriously a dick move.” She added.
Staying silent, she listened to the younger woman speak. “Ouch.” She commented at how Essie just casually mentioned messing with her mom’s love life. “Okay spill it youngling, what did you do to interfere in your mom’s love life?” She asked.
“You know I’m not gonna judge you.” She said with a smile. “Come on, least I can do is get you lunch. You hungry?” She asked.
Essie couldn’t argue with that and simply gave a small chuckle only to give a slight cringe and pull a face, adjusting herself slightly so she wasn’t going to accidentally hurt herself again, “No kissing at all, also yes - god laughing is the WORST when you’re still healing. So rude.”
A soft groan escapes her, she should have know it’d come up and well - she was sure she could trust Kate with a bit of the information at least. “Yeah I could eat - specially if its on you.” She gave a quick grin, “I’ll tell you what I can though - its a story for sure.”

Hearing Esmeralda’s words, Marceline let out a sigh. It all made sense now to why she did what she had done. “Essie…” She said softly.
Leaning over she kissed the younger on her forehead. Getting up she walked to the kitchen and grabbed a couple of mugs. Opening the cabinet, she grabbed the marshmallows. “Heads up.” She said tossing them toward Esmeralda.
A few minutes later she walked back with holding two coffee mugs with hot cocoa. Setting one down in front of Esmeralda she gave her a small smile.
“So… When were you gonna tell me about you’re heartbreak?” She asked casually as she grabbed some of the marshmallows. “Seriously Essie, talk to me.” She said with a soft motherly tone.
The younger DeLeon barely moved, her hands were clenched so tightly her knuckles were white. She had a feeling that this would end up coming up, but now it was here and happening - she was dreading it even more. She was so lost in her thoughts that she nearly missed the marshmallows coming towards her. Only pure reflex managed to help her catch them, only to quickly place them down beside her, her hands moving slowly - rubbing the tops of her jean-clad thighs slowly.
“I.. I kinda did, sorta.” Essie mumbled the words, not looking directly at Marceline when she spoke, “I mentioned my ex and stuff.” she added quickly, her lips pressing together slightly as she paused. “I just.. didn’t say everything, I didn’t say what happened - or why even. I.. I didn’t. I didn’t want to.. not really.” This felt familiar - an odd familiarity rushing over her as she slowly spoke, tears prickling at her eyes. Other familiar conversations started much like this back in her own earth, in her own time - with her mother.
Yet here she was again, a different form of her mother - but still her mother, talking about her broken heart and an ex she had just so badly wanted to forget about. “I didn’t want to tell you how someone I cared about broke my heart and... turned against me.”

“could you maybe stop that?” the words slipped past rory’s lips with more vigor than she intended as she finally let go of her head, “you’ve been doing that for the past ten minutes.”
She hadn’t even realised what she was doing, kind of lost in her own thoughts, it was an unconscious action for her to tap her fingers and perhaps she really just hadn’t noticed what she was doing. At least until the woman's words reached her ears, jolting her back to reality quite quickly. “I’m sorry - I didn’t know I was doing that.” Quickly she clenches her hand, tucking her arm closer to her body and away from the table. “Are you alright?”

Marceline stayed silent as she waited for Esmeralda to speak. “Essie…” She said softly as she wrapped an arm around her to hug her. “I’ve been getting hurt by relationships for a long time.” She said rubbing her arm.
“Sure it would of hurt to of gotten rejected by Zari, but that is life dear.” Marceline said. “Trust me dear, I spent a better part of a year being just really hurt after Lena. So badly that I didn’t really do much.” She explained.
“I get that you want to protect me, but you can’t always be there to do so dear.” She said as she hugged her. Sitting there in silence, Marceline patted Esmeralda on the shoulder reassuringly.
She was very much reminded of being a small child, sitting on a couch - hands tucked on her lap - waiting to hear a lecture or have her mother tell her why her actions had been wrong. Gosh it was still terrifying to think of that, no matter how upset her mother could be - it never matched up to looking up and seeing that disappointed look on her mothers face. That same look she KNEW Marceline was going to have on her face. Still she leaned into the hug, seeking some comfort even if she was questioning if she deserved it.
Fuck. She really was scared she had messed things up. “No - No that, I mean.. that would have been bad.. sucked even being rejected and all.” The words were tumbling out of her mouth as if brought on by a mind of their own. “Rejection always hurts, and always sucks but that is not what I mean.”
Essie’s eyes quickly closed, leaning forward - her elbows resting on her knees - her face hidden in her hands, “I want to protect you anyways.. you’re my family - I can’t have someone hurt you - not like.. not like I was hurt. I had to make sure she’d be a good one - that she wouldn’t hurt you because of you being who you are.. who we are.”

Letting out a heavy sigh as the younger mumbled, Marceline took a moment before speaking. “Honestly Esmeralda, did you think I wouldn’t notice my phone missing?” She asked.
“Now before you get some crazy idea that I’m going to kick you out or that I hate you, neither of those things are true.” She said trying to lighten the air a bit. “I could never hate you and I sure as hell am never going to kick you out.” Marceline said reassuringly.
“However, what you did, despite how noble your intentions, was still wrong.” Marceline said. Getting up from her chair she took a seat closer to the younger woman. Looking over, Marceline’s face still had the grumpy mom face, but her eyes definitely showed a softer side.
“I want to hear why you took my phone and met with Zari behind my back.” She said. “I have an idea of why you did it, but I want to hear it from you.” She explained in a soft motherly tone.
Her head dropped slightly, her fingers twisting as she stared at them instead of actually looking up. She truly did feel horrid about it, particularly after how.. nice Zari had been. The woman was truly lovely after all. “I didn’t think you’d notice so quickly at least.. but.. it was stupid. I know that.”
Her shoulders trembled slightly as she curled slightly into herself, the words spoken were a little reassuring but.. honestly she hadn’t even expected those to be options, at least not at first. But she wasn’t going to talk about that at least. Her eyes closed as she focused on her breathing for a moment, slowly she looked up at Marceline, looking very much the scolded child.
“I know. I know it was wrong.” Essie spoke softly, shifting slightly when Marceline sat closer to her, “I didn’t want her to hurt you.” She spoke after another moment of silence, how was she to fully explain it anyways? Oh I was scared she was going to be a person who would hurt you - that she was secretly something different than she acted around you. Yeah - no, that was not how she’d try to explain it.

“Esmeralda Grace DeLeon. Sit down.” She said sternly as she took a seat. It was clear that when she had used her daughter’s full name, that the younger was in trouble. “You know why we are sitting here right?” She asked. “And don’t lie.” Marceline quickly added.

Oh shit. She knew.
Not that she had really hidden it, after coming back home and putting Marceline’s phone back - the guilt had appeared before she even met Zari. But being home, it sunk further in and - she had debated telling what she had done. But it seemed she didn’t have to. Of course it could have been another reason why she was upset with her. But nothing she could think of, except for maybe the fact she had been back to fighting when she still wasn’t fully healed but.. No.
“Yes.” she muttered, sitting down at the table, her head dropped slightly. She was certain of why her full name had been used, why she was sitting here now. “Because I took your phone - and met up with Zari behind your back.” she mumbled the response, very much feeling like a guilty child. She was not going to even try lying about it, she already felt bad enough.

A chuckle escaped her at the younger woman’s words. “To bad Kiddo.” She commented as she crossed her arms. “Glad to hear you are doing better.” Kate commented as she crossed over to her.
Placing a hand on Esmeralda’s shoulder, she gave her a smile. “So how are you doing? Anything exciting going on in your life?” She asked.
Instead of arguing back about the kiddo thing she simply rolled her eyes, but the small smile that was forming was impossible for her to fully hide. “Yeah, I’m glad for that too actually, gotta say - pain seriously sucks. So its good that its better now - just need to finish healing and I will be good as new.”
Essie glanced up as she felt the hand on her shoulder, offering a quick smile and a slight shrug in response, “Doing alright. Pretty much nothing much exciting going on though - well except for that I was freaking out for a bit that I may have ruined my mothers love life, but - that is a whole other situation which I wouldn’t exactly call exciting per-say..”

Sitting out in the open like this probably wasn’t the best. She still had all the thoughts about kidnapping going around her head, and then there was all the negativity that came with Oliver being in prision. She had known it would bring negativity. Some people hadn’t really liked the Green Arrow. But she was also determined to not let things like this impact on her life, or her twins. She wanted them to have a normal life. Thea hadn’t had a normal childhood. It had been plagued with tragedy, and it was something that she didn’t want her twins to go through. If she could make their life as normal as possible then she would be happy that was doing a good job.
She looked up as she heard a voice, and the woman smiled. “Go ahead…” she murmured with a nod. The twins could sleep through anything, so she was sure it would be fine.
It was - a little heart breaking really, that after everything she had grown up with - she had finally ended up here where things had been .. better at least. But now with this chaos that had happened, everyone was on edge and she had heard for herself about what some people had to say about ‘heroes’ and what they did. It was - honestly it was a mess and Essie was, well she was fed up with it all. Why couldn’t things just be good for once?
She sipped at her drink before carefully sitting down. offering a small smile to the other woman, trying to settle her thoughts. It was nice that at least there was some normalcy going on. Her eyes drifted to the twins, a soft look crossing her face, children - they were all innocent in this, if nothing else - kids still gave hope. At least she firmly believed in that. Slowly her eyes darted back to the woman, settling back in her own chair as she let herself finally relax after the hectic morning she herself had gone though.
“You seem as lost in your own mind as I seem to be in mine.” she commented after a moment, offering a slight shrug before tilting her head, “Seems a lot of that is going on lately.”

“Okay.” Zari said–still staring at the stranger–and then she didn’t say anything else. It was probably kind of rude to sit there watching the girl, but she felt she was excused from social propriety for the moment. She was, after all, feeling a little like she might have been set up. “It’s not a prank…But it’s not what I was expecting either. So what IS it?” The explanation made a lot more sense than anything she’d come up with on her own, but that didn’t mean she was magically just cool with what was happening. “So you–what, stalked me? That’s kind of creepy.” She remarked, but there wasn’t much heat behind her words. She could honestly imagine any number of the Legends doing the same to someone she wanted to date.
“That’s…okay, it’s kind of fair. I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same thing for someone I cared about.” Still, she shook her head and tossed up her hands in a gesture of surrender. “I’m not planning on hurting her, honestly. I’m just–I don’t know. I just had coffee with her a few times. Where I’m from…that kind of thing isn’t really allowed. So I don’t know what this is, but I’m not in the business of hurting nice people.” She realized how ominous that sounded and awkwardly cleared her throat, too little too late. “Um, I mean, I’m not in the business of hurting any people.”
She couldn’t help the small grin that spread across her face, though. “Really? Wait, no, you’re right. That’s her business, we definitely shouldn’t be talking about it behind her back. But uh, yeah. You know. I don’t mind.”
Essie was fidgeting rather badly, her fingers twisting and pulling at her shirt and then fidgetting more to play with her own hand, constantly moving as she tries to explain and also hopefully salvage what she might have ruined. God she didn’t want to have this Zari woman give up on any form of connection she may have with her mother. Damn it. Had she messed everything up? That certainly hadn’t been her plan at all.
Her face was burning as she shook her head quickly, “N-No it - I never meant to stalk or anything, I just - I wanted to know.. I.. I don’t really know. I just wanted to look out for my Mo - for Marceline. You know? She’s important to me and ..and..” she trailed off, her gaze dropping to her feet, fingers twisting once more.
Her lips press together as she listens, slowly looking back up, her head tilting slightly as she takes in what is being said, “I.. I get it, kinda - where I came from it was kinda - something that never really happened either. But I’m glad that you’re not into hurting people - specially the nice ones.” she caught the correction but didn’t say anything about it, instead offering a slight smile before dropping her gaze to the table again, at least until the reaction to her words was spoken.
She could hear the grin in Zari’s voice and glancing up she saw the grin, “Y-Yeah. We shouldn’t talk about that - but.. Its good to know and, she does talk about you quite a bit. Its kind of why I convinced myself to do this stupid thing, she’s probably gonna kill me when she finds out.” And probably try and ground me too, although that part she just thought to herself. “You seem just as nice as she said though, which is kind of comforting to be honest. I also seriously feel bad about this whole mess now cause you really ARE nice.” Essie gives a small groan, dropping her head to her hands, her fingers gently tugging at her hair, crap this was a mess.
