Alright, its Monster Hunt. What does that really entail?
This jam's theme is pretty highly anticipated. Its been runner up for the last few votes and we decided to just send it. I completely understand why. This theme can mean so much. Its so open, but each person seems to immediately have their own idea of what it means. It's been pretty interesting to see where the idea leads people.
Monsters. We all have em. Who needs em?
I think everyone immediately jumps to Monster Hunter^tm. That's natural. Its a resource management, action game. Seems super simple to whip up ttrpg with that same core premise. You would lose a lot from the physicality of it, but ttrpgs also allow for other affordances: freedom of possibility, luxury of time, and a lack of UI.
Another direction is the Monster of the Week of it all. This one feels a bit played out IMO, but go for it. Do a scooby do for all i care. Whatever. It's your game.
Then there's everything else. There's so many little nooks and crannies in this idea to explore, its hard to even categorize them. Here's one for free: I've had this idea of a game in which you slowly take on the traits of the creature that is stocking you until finally, you are confronted with a mirror of yourself, only to realize that that was always you. Maybe imply a time loop. Or something weirder. Who knows?
Monster Cruising (sexual). Monster Cruising (nautical). Monster Cruising (automotive). Monster tracking. Monster Ecology (that's what im going to try to do). Monster... idk people. People can be monsters. What even is a monster? WHAT EVEN IS A HUNT?

A rectangular shape built of gleaming silver; impenetrable to all attempts at force. Those walls held as a vessel of demons, so the stories went. Any who was able to break through would be set upon by devils clad in the same gleaming metal and devoured before the carapace was resealed by those same demons bodies. There were no concrete records of this in living memory.
But time has turned. The great door has creaked open, splitting itself at its center and wheeling away into the walls. The dais at the foot of the door, that has stood at various times as a sacrificial alter, a throne of sovereigns, a house of law, and a stage; now houses busy market district trading in exploration and discovery.
A generation has passed since the opening of the door. The initial excitement of new land, new discovery has been cut down like so many delvers that ventured in, never to return. A formal guild has formed for Delvers. They hold the monopoly on claims in the library, and the arcane artifacts that have since been pulled from its depths. The center of these are the MindDeck and the Books.
Slotted into the base of your skull when you sign with the guild, the Deck is a rectangular device carried over your shoulder with four slots in it. In these slots, books may be place in order to read the information there in. Some of these "Books" contain conventional information which is conveyed seamlessly into your mind, only for it to be erased when the book is removed. Others contain more obscure information: abilities that change your body in ways that challenge reality.
Armed with these Decks, a new class has emerged: Delvers. You join their ranks now, seeking... something from the library.

I posted this as a reply to a question on a post, but it should probably be on the page explicitly.
So I've been holding off on making any explicit plans or statements in the off chance that anything changes (not that I was holding my breath). I am likely going to make a statement on the jam's discord this week and open it up to opinions and thoughts from the community, because truth-be-told, I don't really know where to go. I pretty firmly believe that with the new terms of service update from itch, it is no longer a viable platform for anyone to operate under.
At the very least, the August Jam will probably continue as planned, but I will likely spend this next month finding alternatives and working with our community to figure something out something that is more equitable.

I heard the term "setting agnostic" to describe a rpg mechanic that is not connected to a specific setting,
And I got curious. What would be "setting Atheist", "setting heretical", "setting blasphemous"?
Setting agnostic (weak): The particulars of the setting are unknown at the time that the rules are written.
Setting agnostic (strong): The particulars of the setting are unknown at the time that the rules are used.
Setting atheist (traditional): The rules explicitly frame the setting as a thought exercise with no material reality.
Setting atheist (online): The rules constantly remind you of the above, and they're real smug about it, too.
Setting heretical: The rules think they understand your setting better than you yourself do.
Setting blasphemous: The rules think your setting fucking sucks.

We’re about halfway through July’s jam themed around libraries and collections!
The discord just voted on the August theme as well which will be MONSTER HUNT! Keep an eye out for that to go up in the next few weeks.
gonna try and experiment with premade systems for smth quick like a game jam before i get back to my main ttrpg project. just to see how things Thing. but i dont know many game jams that im interested in. its a shame. a damn shame.

In this month’s jam we ask: what does a library mechanic play like? Is there a concise, elegant, and fun way to build a tabletop game around collection? What kind of novel gameplay does a library themed game invite?
The challenge for July is Teaching Principles: Quick-Start Guides!
As someone who tries to read as many TTRPGs as possible, it can be very time consuming to to understand what makes a game tick. Quick-starts are the perfect way to cut through that front load issues. They are also a handy reference for the bare minimum necessary mechanics of a game. This can be a helpful exercise for understanding what makes your game work and how your process works.
This challenge is a continuation of the Summer Teaching Principles series. Through these challenges, we are exploring the basics of tabletop game design in the hopes that we can reach some insight into our own processes.
The jam is open to everyone and perfect for new designers that want to dip their toes in! Come join us for July!
