Gale is brown, he’s an eldest child, he’s the hottest man in his district, he’s tall, he’s loyal, he hunts, he has unrequited? love, he’s a freedom fighter, he hates the guts of his oppressors, he gets mad bitches, he eats hot chip and gives the girl he loves his food when she’s hungry and when his little brother has to put extra slips in the death lottery he literally can’t speak about it, and he’s hella strategic and he makes bitches seeth and hiss and cry because they hate him so much.truly one of THEE characters ever.

I wanted to call this “teenage Katniss and Peeta” before I remembered they’re teenagers during the events of all three books… so instead this is just “early years katniss and Peeta”. At school, taking notice, never speaking.

thinking about katniss and asterid again. what do you mean katniss felt the need to put up a wall to protect herself from needing her? that she thought she was going to die without ever setting that right? that she thought peeta stroking her cheek in her sleep was her mother? how didn’t want to wake up because that would mean letting her know how much she ‘craved that gentle touch’? how she makes her feel safe and secure even though she doesn’t trust her? how she misses her even though doesn’t trust her? how after the first games she realised her depression was something she couldn’t help and actively worked to fix their relationship? letting her handle her money? returning her hugs? letting her nurse her when sick? that she believed asterid would be difficult to convince to run away but gale told her she would understand? that they had watched the games together and she wouldn’t say no to her? how asterid had to send her daughter off to every parent’s worst nightmare twice? how she believed she watched her die in an explosion (like her husband)? how they both lost the one person that held them together? that asterid could not bear to return home without prim? not even for her sick daughter? how their previous roles were reversed? katniss depressed and unresponsive vs asterid who threw herself into her work? much like katniss did with hunting? how they cried on the phone together? how they will likely never fix their relationship?

everything that gets "revised" about the games in sunrise on the reaping is less interesting than what we can infer from the original series. which is a big issue if your book is about propaganda. haymitch's story as we inferred from the trilogy is as follows: a sixteen year old kid randomly gets chosen for a nightmare death match, is lucky enough to find an arena loophole and gets punished ruthlessly for it, and then goes into substance abuse and retreats from society as he has to watch two kids from his home die every year for 23 years.

all of that is so much more interesting than a 16 year old who is chosen to go into the arena after an act of rebellion, who gets chosen to be an agent of the rebellion before entering the arena for no reason, who personally stands up to and defies the fascist leader, who somehow does not die a brutal death in the arena as soon as possible because of said defiance (so that snow can kill his girlfriend in front of him? each collaborator dies brutally but for some reason haymitch lives and it makes no sense). and then descending into madness and alcoholism explicitly and immediately because your puppy love girlfriend dies and you can't handle it.

also collins took one of the most interesting and multifaceted characters of the trilogy and was so afraid of exploring negative qualities. haymitch is known for his mean streak, his intelligence, and his deep-rooted care. none of that is seen here. in fact, he reads (and reads himself) as dumb, his intelligence eclipsed by his rebellious girlfriend, who teaches him big words and that maybe the world could be better. he's never mean - the haymitch of sunrise on the reaping would never tell 17 year-old katniss "you could live a hundred lifetimes and not deserve that boy." in the arena, everything he does is out of kindness for the weakest tributes. every alliance and action pure, when it could have been really interesting to navigate what being placed in a "49 other kids or me" death trap does to your psyche in the moment.
