Oh my goodness. I can't believe I'm saying this. I think it's time to read the hunger games. I haven't read it in so long. I mean, really read it.

The wide streets are full of dancing people. I squint to make out their tiny figures in more detail. “Are they in costumes?” “Who could tell?” Peeta answers. “With all the crazy clothes they wear here. Couldn’t sleep, either?” “Couldn’t turn my mind off,” I say. “Thinking about your family?” he asks. “No,” I admit a bit guiltily. “All I can do is wonder about tomorrow. Which is pointless, of course.” In the light from below, I can see his face now, the awkward way he holds his bandaged hands. “I really am sorry about your hands.” “It doesn’t matter, Katniss,” he says. “I’ve never been a contender in these Games anyway.” “That’s no way to be thinking,” I say. “Why not? It’s true. My best hope is to not disgrace myself and . . .” He hesitates. “And what?” I say. “I don’t know how to say it exactly. Only . . . I want to die as myself. Does that make any sense?” he asks. I shake my head. How could he die as anyone but himself? “I don’t want them to change me in there. One of the more subtle but biggest takeaways for me from SROTR is how the wealth inequality is portrayed. District 12 doesn’t seem as poor, the capital doesn’t seem as rich. I know others have commented on this, but to me it read as an obvious commentary on “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer”.

What’s striking to me is what this implies about Katniss’s parents, specifically Asterid. The gap between the Seam and Town is still very present, but daily conditions in the Seam are described very differently by Katniss and Haymitch.

For Haymitch, life is hard for folks, but there’s no talk of people dropping dead from starvation. Whereas, for Katniss, she describes this as a real danger and likelihood multiple times. There’s a possibility that it still occurs as broadly during SROTR, but the exclusion seems purposeful on Suzanne’s part.

Anyway, I couldn’t stop thinking about Asterid and how, when she chose to leave Town for the Seam, it wasn’t the same “death sentence” that it would become in Katniss’s books. I don’t think this makes Burdock and her love any less meaningful, but it made her loss even more impactful.

When he dies, she’s left poorer and more vulnerable than when she married him, and she’s left without the life partner that would have made it all bearable. Ouch.

Then they would actually sell Dove Drops at Target, and it would become like the Every Flavor Beans from HP. They would just exist. Our kids would eat them, not truly knowing the meaning behind it.

At this point, I swear that if people keep simping over young Coriolanus Snow or missing the point of the Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins is going to write another book where Haymitch is forced to promote the Capitol’s new favourite candy, Dove Drops (of course they’re gumdrops, and why yes, they’re red and have tiny pictures of birds that could either be doves or geese depending on how you squint). Sure the book would also show Finnick’s Games, but she KNOWS that the best way to show people that she’s not happy with them is to hurt Haymitch again and again until the message sticks in all of our minds 😭.

Does anyone think about how the other covey members , went with Snow and Lucy Gray to the meadow , to the lake? How he was the man that helped their Lucy Gray survive.

Then one day they find out Lucy Gray is missing , but Snow is also gone. So maybe the ran away together?

Then they see Snow in the capital , rising to power. They watch as he becomes president. And they watch him take 2 of their districts children every year to kill them. And then they watch as their Lenore Dove is also killed because of Snow.

And then they’re finally able to travel again, but at the cost of what was their home for 75 years. And there in the new town , he plays his fiddle. And sees at last how Snow falls.

Do you think that when Peeta’s heart stopped in the Quarter Quell, for just a small moment, Gale was happy that Peeta would be out of the equation?

King of Hearts

I wanted to draw this for the longest time and I finally did it! :D I sort of wanted to start with Katniss but my bread boy won me over once again, so I painted his card design first, lol. My favorite part was the fire cape, got to paint my design of the tribute costume again!! And I’ve always complained about how hard it is to paint his blonde hair, but I think I’m finally enjoying it. Ashy blonde hair is just one of many shades of blonde, though. I feel like now I need to learn how to paint platinum blonde or something like that, lol. At least I’ll finally do justice to Chat Noir from MLB once and for all, the blonde I gave him always looked a bit green. xD

Anyway, this particular design was extremely entertaining to make, I avoid drawing buildings because I suck at them, but I think the bakery came out alright! I really fell in love with the final look of it. No bread on the shelves because the drawing itself already looked to full with all the other elements, but oh well, maybe next time! :D I tried to do a star like background for tribute Peeta and boy did it look awful. The creamy background with a touch of leaves wasn’t my favorite final look but it doesn’t distract from the cape, at least, I don’t think so, you can barely see the leaves. And finally I wanted the design to have a printed look to it too, I didn’t want the card too look brand new or too HQ, does that make any sense? It was all a big ass experiment but I think it came out exactly how I wanted it! Yesssss!

So, if Peeta is the King of Hearts, Katniss is the Queen of Spades, of course! (All the right moooooooves, heeeey eeeeey) I wanted to only draw K and P, but maybe I could do other characters too! I have no idea what card to give Haymitch or Prim or Rue, so if you guys could help me out I’d be extremely grateful!
