David Robert Jones (1947-2016)
I guess I’ve known him for ever. My parents celebrating their university years in the 80s surely treasure ‘Let’s Dance’ so I must have come across it somehow. Never hitting me quite enough though. It came much later, during my ‘all voices hail Brian Molko’ phase around 2007. Endlessly watching interviews with Placebo frontman I stumbled upon this video, Brian’s acoustic cover of ‘Five Years’. Adding to that their duet, alternative version of “Without You I’m Nothing” I was more than ready to dig deeper.
And I did, coming across one of the most intriguing album ever made, ‘Low’. Half singy-songy, half minimalist, instrumental journey through time and space. All those feelings it evokes just blew me away and it’s not simply because being from Poland I can identify with the gray, austere landscapes of ‘Warszawa’. It’s the complexity of the world it is showing. This utterly lonely planet where girls with gray eyes live but they got problems. This empty city that seems to be derived from dystopian science-fiction novels. The neighborhood where Ziggy Stardust, Major Tom, Halloween Jack and Thin White Duke all have their apartments. The place where everybody is invited no matter how odd and freaky they may seem. Thank you Mr Bowie for giving me the opportunity to visit. I will continue doing it now even more often than before.

Since 2007!
Can enyone explain to me what happened that year? Oh yeah, that was the time I entered the realm of “proper music” abandoning Bravo Hits compilations. But anyhow, how awesome was that year? I’ve recently tried to group the best albums from that 12 months and *surprise* most of them are my beloved ones. Starting with this one. Beirut’s France inspired ‘Flying Club Cup’ have the unique vibe of the fully packed cafe during rush hours. Oh boy, should I smile? Cause it’s Sunday?
