The Evermore Grimoire: Mythology
Elves are supernatural beings who originated in Norse mythology and English folklore. In early modern folklore, they were connected with fairies. However, ever since J.R.R. Tolkein’s fantasy novels they have become more popular and tend to lean more towards being humanoids. They have been portrayed to be long-lived or immortal and have magical powers attributed to them, especially powers related to nature. Elves are also often pictured as youthful-seeming men and women of great beauty living in forests and other natural places, underground or in wells and springs. In relation to the beauty of the Norse elves, there are some Old English words such as ælfsciene (meaning ‘elf-beautiful’). These facts indicate that there may be some similarities (in regards to beauty) between Norse and Old English Elf mythology.

The Evermore Grimoire: 🎃 Halloween Monsters 🎃
Count Dracula is a centuries-old vampire, exactly how old though is unknown. Little was known of his early life, but he claimed to be a descendant of legendary warlord Attila the Hun. He resided within an ancient castle in the Carpathian Mountains. Unlike the vampires of Eastern European folklore, which are portrayed as repulsive and corpse-like creatures, Dracula exuded a veneer of aristocratic charm. In his conversations with Jonathan Harker, he revealed himself as deeply proud of his boyar heritage and nostalgic for the past times, which he admitted had become only a memory of heroism, honour and valour in modern times. Dracula also studied the black arts at the academy of Scholomance and became proficient in both alchemy and magic. Taking up arms, as befitting his rank and status as a Voivode, he led troops against the Turks across the Danube. Dracula returned from death as a vampire and lived for several centuries in his castle with three beautiful female vampires beside him. They seemed to bear a possible family resemblance though whether they were his lovers, sisters or daughters made by him were not made clear in the narrative.

The Evermore Grimoire: Beings
Selene Gallio is a centuries-old mutant psychic vampire also known as the Black Queen and is a longtime member of the Hellfire Club. She was born 17,000 years ago in central Europe, ‘After the Oceans swallowed Atlantis’ and ‘Before the rise of the sons of Aryas.’ Selene’s mother was young when she gave birth to her, but would be dead before her daughter even spoke her first words. The tribal elders ordered her mother’s people to sacrifice themselves to Selene until none remained. They then gave her sustenance as well as her name. As an immortal Selene possesses great magical powers, her chief among them is being able to manipulate shadows and darkness. She can also psionically drain the life forces of other human beings into herself, by physical touch. However if Selene drains a person’s entire life force, the victim dies and their body crumbles into dust.

The Evermore Grimoire: Mythology Themis (Θεμις meaning ‘Divine Law’) was the Titan goddess of divine law and order of the traditional rules of conduct first established by the gods in Greek mythology. She was also a prophetic goddess who presided over the most ancient oracles, including Delphi. In this role, she was the divine voice (themistes) who first instructed mankind in the primal laws of justice and morality, such as the precepts of belief, the rules of hospitality, good governance, conduct of assembly, and pious offerings to the gods. Themis was also an early bride of Zeus (king of the gods) and his first counsellor as well as mother to The Fates and The Horae. She was often represented seated beside his throne advising him on the precepts of divine law and the rules of fate. In Greek, the word ‘themis’ referred to divine law, those rules of conduct long established by custom. Unlike the word ‘nomos,’ the term was not usually used to describe laws of human decree.

The Evermore Grimoire: Mythology
Nyx (Νυξ meaning ‘Night’) was the goddess of the night in Greek mythology and one of the primordial gods who emerged at the dawn of creation. She was an ancient deity envisaged as the very substance of the night and as a veil of dark mists drawn across the sky to obscure the light of Aither, the shining blue of the heavens. Her equal opposite was Hemera(goddess of daylight) who scattered the mists of night at dawn. Nyx’s appearances are sparse in surviving mythology, but have revealed her as a figure of such exceptional power and beauty that she was even feared by Zeus (king of the gods) himself.

The Evermore Grimoire: Heroines
Raven (also known as Rachel Roth) is a superhero with magical abilities and a prominent member of the Teen Titans. She was born to a human mother named Angela Roth and the demon overlord Emperor Trigon who raped her mother after she joined a cult which summoned him. Going by Arella, Angela retreated to an alternate dimension where Raven was born and raised in the pacifistic reality called Azarath. Growing up, Raven was taught to “control her emotions” by the Azar and the Azarathian monks in order to suppress and control her inherited demonic powers. Eventually she learned that Trigon was planning to come to her dimension and vowed to stop him. Raven initially approached the Justice League, but they refused her on the advice of Zatanna who sensed her demonic parentage. In desperation, she reformed the Titans as the New Teen Titans to fight her father.

The Evermore Grimoire: Creatures
A Hellhound is a supernatural dog in folklore that originates from the Underworld. The Hellhound has been seen several times throughout history, and it is not specific to any one place, but they are commonly associated with graveyards and the underworld. While considered a bad omen, the hellhound has often helped many as well. It was also said to warn people of danger and protect them when they needed it. The dog is often very loyal to those who call upon one and is said to be very watchful. While the creatures are often known as evil, they are not as evil as one would suggest. Seeing a hellhound or hearing one howl may be an omen or even a cause of death. Hellhounds are called ‘The Bearers of Death’ because they were supposedly created by ancient demons to serve as heralds of death.

The Evermore Grimoire: Mythology
Apollo (Ἀπόλλων) is the god of the sun, healing, medicine, prophecy, knowledge, oracles, purity, art, music (he directed the choir of the Muses), poetry, archery (but not for war or hunting) and plagues in Greek mythology. He was born on the floating island of Delos, along with his twin sister Artemis (goddess of the hunt). Immediately after his birth he demanded a musical instrument and hence became the god of music. Apollo’s mother, the Titan Leto (goddess of motherhood), was brutally assaulted by the giant Tityus while she was traveling to Delphi. In response to this insult and violation of his mother, Apollo went to the giant and with his golden sword and silver arrows he slayed him.

Gravely affected by this experience, Rogue had no choice but to seek help with Mystique’s enemy, Professor Charles Xavier, founder and leader of the X-Men. Contrary to other members’ disapproval, Xavier took Rogue in as part of the team.

The Evermore Grimoire: Creatures
The Phoenix (Φοῖνιξ) is a mythical, sacred firebird that can be found in both Greek and Roman mythology. It may have also been inspired by a similar creature from Egyptian mythology called the Bennu. It is believed there is only ever one Phoenix alive at a time. It has a 500 year life-cycle, near the end of which, it builds itself a nest of incense and sacred materials that it then ignites. The bird is then consumed by the fire of it’s nest, but from its ashes a young Phoenix arises, reborn anew. The newborn Phoenix is destined to live as long as its previous incarnation. In some stories, the new Phoenix embalms the ashes of its old self in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis (known as the ‘Sun-City’ in Greek).
