I came across some nonsense on my dash about the 5x02 episode so I thought I would just give my two cents here… and I’ll probably bite my tongue for coming out of my shell twice today to post something other than fanfics but here we go…
Last night episode was a great episode for Regina Mills.
I keep seeing anons talking about how OOC she was in the inbox of people I follow, and I’m wondering what kind of Regina they’ve been making in their heads? Because I see nothing but consistency and beautiful evolution there.
Let’s look at those first scenes with Emma and the dagger.
Everyone and their cousin is yelling how awful Regina is for using the dagger against Emma and how SQ is abusive and I’m confused because? Has anyone forgot what a massive asshole our Regina Mills can be? Just because she’s working the hero team and growing as a person doesn’t mean she doesn’t get to keep her established personality traits, and among them, you have the fact that Regina likes to be a dick sometimes. That doesn’t make her a bad person, that makes her a person with an interesting flaw (which I happen to love).
And it’s not like she played around with the dagger either?
First time she uses it, it’s to save Emma’s ass so she won’t tell the truth to Arthur and drag attention upon her and be forced to do magic.
2d & 3rd times, Regina does it unknowingly, unwillingly.
Sp you know what really counts?
What counts is that the moment Regina really needed Emma to do something for her, the moment she needed her to save Robin’s life, the moment she was desperate, she didn’t use the dagger. She could have. Who would blame her? She’s losing someone she loves, and worst of all, it’s because of her, because he tried to save her life, because he tried to save her from someone she had wronged. She was losing someone because of the woman she’d once been (of course it’s more complicated than that, but given the depth of Regina Mills self-loathing we can safely guess something along those lines was going on through her head at the time).
But she doesn’t use the dagger. Despite all this, despite how distraught she is - and remember who she used to be, how she manipulated people and walked over them to get what she wanted - despite all this, she lets Emma make her own choice.
Because she has faith on the good person Emma is, even tainted by darkness.
Because she knows her friend will help her.
Because she’s no longer the person who imposes her will upon others.
She’s at a great place of vulnerability when she makes that request of Emma, and Emma sees that, and acts.
That was a beautiful SQ moment for me.
Another thing I’ve seen people being up in arms about is Regina exchange her life for Robin’s, and I don’t see what is so curious or out of character about it?
We’re talking about a woman who swallowed a death curse to save her two most loathed enemies because her son asked her to.
A woman who constantly dares the people that attack her to kill her.
A woman who was ready to sacrifice herself for a town she hates so her son would be safe.
A woman who almost put herself under a Sleeping Curse.
A woman who keeps getting herself into insanely dangerous situations.
A woman whose suicidal tendencies, whose self-destructive streak is so inherent (and was acknowledged by the show), she jumped in front of a boy she didn’t remember just because she couldn’t let him die.
Sooooo you know it’s not so wild that she would willingly and without hesitation sacrifice herself for Robin.
Especially considering how Emma was telling her it was her fault and her price to pay.
Especially considering she never thinks that her own life is worth saving.
And I even think - this is pure conjecture and my opinion - that it may also have been about how frightening it was stepping up as the Savior and the leader of this town. Like, it was almost like chosing the most drastic solution to deal with the immediate problem and run away from everything else (the dark curse, anyone?).
Because the only time Regina Mills acts cowardly is when she’s faced with a role she doesn’t think she can fit into. When she thinks she can never leave up to everyone’s expectations.
Because, being good, a hero, a savior? These are not titles Regina Mills confront easily, or think she deserves.
So if you don’t think last night’s ep was all about Regina and her incredible character growth and accepting herself and support from others… I really don’t know what to tell you.

One of the things that makes me most furious about ARBs is how to them the fact that Henry is in therapy is, in and of itself, this Bad Thing that everyone needs to be Very Concerned about, like (and honestly, the S1 narrative kind of backs them up on this view). No??? Therapy is not a bad thing. Being in therapy is not a bad thing. Seeking help is not a bad thing.
And you know what abusers absolutely don’t do? Give their victims a safe, private space without them, overseen by an expert professional, to discuss any issues they want to work through. Henry was seeing Dr. Hopper before Regina knew about the book. She saw her son struggling with something and she got him someone to talk to when she realized he wasn’t responding to her efforts to help him. That is the OPPOSITE of bad parenting, chriiiist.

They have Lana play young Regina to make it more acceptable for the audience to stomach what happened to her. If there had been a real eighteen year old girl like Lily or young Emma play her god knows people would be up in arms about her marriage to Leopold or about her being manipulated into magic or about her losing Daniel. There would be none of this anti-Regina crap. She was a girl, barely an adult, and what happened to her was not alright. Protect Regina Mills at all costs.

BROTP: Regina protectively putting her arm in front of Snow.
Regina went momma bear on Snow and it warmed the hell out of my heart. She immediately did what Snow did, which is protect her child. Snow held her belly, and Regina did the same by using herself as a shield.
Snow White is the only person who has ever seen Regina in her purest form, before loss and darkness. Though Regina has ventured far away from that, in this moment she is the same person who jumped on her horse to save Snow. Regina has done a full 360 and she’s back to where their relationship started.
The beautiful thing is that Snow has such a kind heart and unlike many people, she is willing to start over completely with Regina and this is where is all began. Her second chance is not only found with Robin, but with Snow. All it took was ghost Cora attacking Snow, but it was all worth it.
Here’s to a handful of quarters and a beautiful friendship.
