I bring a kind of “I don’t think July 4th is worth celebrating under any administration and it’s not unique to this one” vibe to the function that liberals don’t really like

idk if you've talked about this before (i just recently discovered your blog) but i honestly don't really understand how the world is set up in naruto. the shinobi villages (and back in the day, the individual clans) are under the feudal lords right? and yet most of the time they seem to be doing their own thing. i mean they have their own shinobi wars that seemingly have nothing to do with the non shinobi world. and also what's stopping shinobi from simply beating the feudal lords asses
so basically the narutoverse operates on a system of one ninja village per country. i've seen this called the "一国一里のシステム" (i think this is read as "ikkoku ichizato no shisutemu" but i can't swear to the second word there) in the japanese fandom, which might be canon but i don't remember
so let's start with a lil bit of real world history - "hidden villages" aren't made up! by kishimoto, i mean. in japanese folklore, a "hidden village" (隠れ里, read as "kakurezato") is kinda like a magic-y secret place you might stumble into when you get lost and then weird shit starts happening. but once you leave, you won't ever find it again, no matter how hard you look. after the genpei war in the 1100s, the defeated taira clan allegedly fled to the mountains and created a small village, which is presumably the heike village that exists today in nikkou city in tochigi prefecture, but that's not a real "hidden village" from the stories, as you can go there whenever you want regardless of the quality of your character. basically, an "irl" hidden village is meant to be a place of peace. unsurprisingly, this idea of a secret magic village became a recurring theme in stories about ninja and youkai.
in the world of naruto, the first hidden village is created as an attempt to bring about peace between two warring clans, which lasts five minutes and then everything goes to shit again. so where do the daimyou come in?
the hidden villages in folklore didn't have any connections to daimyou as far as i can tell, most likely bc no one was actually given that title until the 1300s, and these legends are at least two hundred years older than that.
the word daimyou has evolved over time - initially it referred to an owner of a type of private land called myouden (名田 - the "myou" in "daimyou" (大名) is short for "myouden"), but the meaning changed over time, ultimately resulting in definition we have today of "basically this is a feudal lord". as they were subservient to the shogun (and the emperor but. ehhhhh) it's possible that there was something like that in the word of naruto, although here the daimyou simply seem to be basically each in charge of their own mini kingdoms with no shogun or emperor to be seen (i've jokingly called kage "ninja presidents" before, but they're more like. ninja governors or maybe ninja mayors). in other words, the daimyou are the most politically powerful people in the story.
so, what's their relationship with the shinobi? basically, they get to decide what the shinobi of the hidden village in their country are allowed to do, send them work, and say "yeah that guy can be the new kage i guess". as kakashi says, a shinobi is a tool. thus, a daimyou is one who wields said tool. baki later gets even more specific - shinobi are tools of conflict. the system as is relies on constant competition of the violent sort - when an alliance between countries is made, the shinobi of those countries suffer for it, as less conflict is less work for them. suna's assault on konohagakure was intended to be a threat to the wind daimyou, who had been sending jobs to konoha instead of suna bc it was cheaper for him. usually, intentionally under-funding your own military forces in a world that runs on constant violence would be a terrible idea, but i guess he figured that no one had much interest in taking wind country's land, since it was mostly desert. or he was just an idiot, like baki says.
so why not just go kill the daimyou? well, for starters, then the whole system as it is currently completely collapses, there's the threat of a power vacuum, and the next guy might be even worse. "but wait, why does there have to be a next guy?" you ask "can't they just decide to use a different system that isn't fucking them all over?" to which i can only just tiredly gesture at my own country and ask in return if you think people are ever going to stop being stupid about politics

there should be more info on tumblr blogs than following or mutuals. I want little icons that say shit like "mutuals in law" or "endorsed by your friends" or "blocked by 10 people you have blocked" I think it would add to the conversation. make it worse also

saw a comment where someone verbatim said “women are not an oppressed minority group” in bold and went on to say there was no force/group killing large numbers of women. it was from 4 hours ago. adults in 2025 literally talk like the misogynistic teenage boys I went to high school with in 2008. misogyny never went anywhere & the reactionary surge in power has just enabled these people to go back to saying publicly the shit they’ve been keeping to themselves for like 15 years

people get so weird about rap when its literally just another vocal style. i dont think its even particularly tied to one genre even if it has most of its roots in hip hop. could you imagine if people were like "yeah i dont listen to Singing music sorry. idk i guess singing just isn't for me." i mean im sure there is someone out there who refuses to listen to songs with any lyrics but you'd have to acknoweldge it's kind of a crazy take right. this is what it sounds like to me when people say they don't listen to rap.

Something the AI text boom has made me realize is that "no information" is significantly better than "wrong information."
I just saw Doordash AI describe a gallon of blue cheese dressing as a "sweet and refreshing beverage concentrate."
