i don't think hatchetfield as a fandom is ready for "frankenruth" because it has canon richie.
richie, whose only redeeming quality in npmd was dying brutally, and we just all took it and fucking ran with it.
do i want richie to cosplay hatsune miku, be a gay flushing mess and go "uwu" sometimes? probably, i've grown to quite like this version of him.
but canonically all richie has been is a weird asshole. he's called steph a waifu, he's sarcastic most of the time and doesn't even seem to care that much about ruth.
and im not quite sure if i want team starkid to try and make him seem sympathetic like linda, frank and ted, or if i want them to just give us a wake up call and make him a complete jerk.
#i love canon richie lipschitz#i want him to be an asshole nerd who sucks and is lowkey sleazy THIS FOOD IS SO FUCKIN GOOD LOIS

ben and hannah have such interesting ways of dealing with the girls as the two adults that spend notable time with them. the way that ben starts to hide from the circumstances they're all in, tucking himself away in his memories and fantasies of what the future could have been. and then, eventually, literally hiding from them in the cave.
and then hannah adapting as quickly as she can to try and save herself from their violence. because she knows pack mentality and she knows things about behavior. especially animalistic behavior.
and i think, to a degree, it speaks to their identities as well. coach is a gay man who has had to hide his queerness out of fear of repercussions. he isn't fully open about who he is, understandably so, and that teaches him how to get good at hiding. how to make himself disappear in certain settings. so, that's what he does out in the woods.
whereas hannah, as a woman, has to learn to adapt to her surroundings so people don't do something to her that she doesn't want. she's aware and observant and yes, that is because she's a scientist, but it's also because she's a woman. she's had her whole life to learn how to adapt, to figure out the best course of action to keep herself safe, and she uses that to her advantage.

has anyone ever considered ella purnell as melanie king in a TMA fancast….idk why this popped into my brain but it feels right. maybe something about what i’ve seen of her performance in sweetpea. the bubbling rage of it all. i think she’d eat it up

Natalie is the only one who never allowed herself even the illusion of normalcy or happiness after the rescue. The others made some attempt—however fragile—to rebuild their lives or blend into the world. Shauna and Melissa retreated into the façade of stability, marrying and raising children in the quiet rhythms of suburban life. Taissa found a family of her own and pursued a successful career as a lawyer and then a politician. Van poured herself into her pop culture passion by creating her video store and allowing herself to live through the past. Misty satisfied her need to be needed through her career as a geriatric nurse. Lottie created her cult (intentional community). Even Travis tried to build a life with someone (before Nat came back in).
But Nat never created anything for herself. She didn’t even let herself have a home, she lived out of motel rooms across the country for her whole life. She remained completely alone apart from toxic stints with Travis that ended disastrously and brief flings that she sabotaged before they could get anywhere.
Even though she’s colder, harsher, and less openly compassionate in the adult timeline, her moral compass is still strong. It's that very sense of right and wrong that condemns her. She can’t accept joy, can’t allow herself peace, because deep down, she believes she forfeited her right to those things in the wilderness. Every chance at connection, every moment of possible happiness, she sabotages—because she’s still carrying the weight of what they did, and she doesn't believe she deserves to ever put it down. While others try to bury the guilt of what they did out there, Nat wears it on her sleeve.
She’s the closest thing to a “savior” or “saint” in this story, but that’s exactly why she suffers the most.

ok wait. hallucination/dream jackie actually brings up a great point! shauna is possibly the worst communicator out of the yellowjackets! she deceives, she lies, she covers things up and then gets mad when people don't know what she wants. like girl, jackie had NO idea that you didn't want to be called shipman. she didn't know you liked jeff, she didn't know you resented her or how inferior she made you feel because you never fucking told her! the crux of like 99% of jackieshaunas issues stems from the fact that shauna is incapable of communicating issues before they bubble over into fits of rage! which shauna knows! because when she told jackie she was bothered by the dress/randi hookup thing in season 1 jackie immediately dropped it! COMMUNICATE SHAUNA!!! pls for the sake of literally everyone COMMUNICATE!

Adult Van is annoyed by her younger self, doesn't want to engage with her because that's the version of herself she's buried. Teen Van did A Lot of Bad Shit to Survive and Adult Van wants nothing to do with that anymore, thank you.
But Teen Van is enamored with Adult Van. That's her. In the future. That's Van back in civilization, who survived all the horrors and got to be weird and gay. Got to watch The Goonies 100 more times.
For Adult Van, Teen Van is an awful reminder.
For Teen Van, Adult Van is hope.

When Jeff was talking to Callie about how lonely it is to be Shauna's husband I realized that they were showing him doing things /with/ Callie that Shauna was doing in secret without her. Like we see Shauna being creepy in Callie's bed in the pilot and her sleepover with Tai was in Callie's bed too but here we see Jeff actually sitting with Callie in her room, being present. Or instead of stealing her weed to smoke in secret, Jeff decided to smoke with her. it really highlighted how absent and emotionally unavailable Shauna is even when she is home with them.
