The thing about normal people that tears my heart into pieces is that the thing Connell ruined their relationship for - aka his friends knowing he and Marianne were together aka his "reputation" - was utterly pointless, not only because those people's opinions didn't matter but because their love for each other had always been so evident, people just kept quiet about it.
