i've always played vanilla, i just don't care for modded minecraft, but i do screw around with texture packs sometimes. i've got a simple villager one (got tired of looking at them), and a spawn egg retexture one rn, but that's it- i've been trying to Enjoy Base Minecraft in its purest form. i did try a tooltip-type pack that did look very helpful, and was very well made, but i decided part of the fun of minecraft items/enchantments/etc is getting no description, no hints, no help, just sorta fumbling around with stuff trying to figure out what it's for, etc. and with how long it's been since i've Played Minecraft that sort of thing happens to me a lot. it's good i recommend embracing the confusion- it's not actually all that confusing once you get used to it. once you start thinking like minecraft wants you too
