okay the joke’s been made and i’m not taking it back but

EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SHOT TELLS ME THAT THEY KNEW AND THE SUBTEXT WAS INTENTIONAL.

So first off, the pose clearly mirrors every time a guy knocks a girl over in an anime that has ever been made, ever. It’s everywhere. It’s omni-fucking-present and I hate it.

But then, look at Ryu’s face. His eyes are round and wide, with a reflection in the iris and along the bottom lid that’s usually used to imply the subject is close to tears or in awe of what they’re seeing. He feels vulnerable, emotionally and physically, compared to what he’s looking at. Again, usually shounen girls staring at their super heroic macho love interest who’s the only reason they exist. But there’s more. The sheen on the clearly emphasized lower lip and the slightly parted mouth are both anime tropes usually applied to women in vulnerable or seductive situations. Another interesting fact is the shadow over most of his face, reinforcing that Jack is directly above him. That, combined with the generally submissive expression, leads me to believe that the animators knew exactly what the fuck they were doing. This moment is Jack stopping Ryu from chasing down Zoda and probably getting himself run over or shot. The line is “How will you beat Zoda if you’re dead,” which is arguably the first sincere and straightforward expression of concern Jack has shown for Ryu’s well-being. It’s an intimate moment for Jack because he’s scared, and it’s an intimate moment for Ryu because he’s forced to confront Jack’s feelings and acknowledge that this guy isn’t an asshole all the way through. He cares, and Ryu isn’t used to knowing that people care anymore. Even in his relationship with Haruka, he was the clearly dominant party. This is new territory for Ryu, and he’s scared and excited.
