The alleged road today… End of the road: NO OVERNIGHT PARKING
And no shortage of notices either…
The sea's out there somewhere, concealed by the driving Scotch mist, with a wind behind it capable of knocking the bike over at times. (Sunday's weather.)

Exploding Flowers- "Crowded Streets" single (Meritorio)
Tumblr media
Oh, heck, yeah! This LA indie rock/pop band released a fantastic LP in 2020 (Stumbling Blocks) that ended up on many folks' year-end lists, and then... nothing.
Well, they are back with a fab new single and an album out on the Meritorio label in March.
"Crowded Streets" yips, jumps, and chimes in all the right places while the rhythm section has a real snap to it (as do the vocals). This is a helluva way to start 2025!

How Tim Hinely (and The Vulgar Boatmen) Saved Me From Going Prog  (by Mark Sullivan)
Tumblr media
I had pretty much finished my follow-up to “My Conflicted Relationship with Progressive Music.” I was going to whine about spending the last few months trying to promote my band, The Deep Roots, debut album – Never Coming Back. I’d done a lot of research looking for other bands working in a similar style and who is writing about them. We are heavily influenced by The Beatles, The Kinks, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young.
Check out this passive aggressive little rant.
“In the age of information overload, I suppose not being able to find NEW music that I like is my own fault. I just haven’t searched long and hard enough. But I have looked, a lot. And scanning through the thousands of bands on SoundCloud or BandCamp is absurd.”
And then a little internet overstatement.
“In contrast, on this very web-site (Spirit of Cecilia), Brad Birzer, Carl Olson, and Tad Wert have no trouble listing their favor albums from 2020, and many of those selections lead toward Prog. For me, if I exclude releases from myself, friends, and family, I can’t list a single album that came out this year that I went back and listened to a second time. The bottom line is that Prog is healthy. There are a lot of talented artists releasing material that is exciting to their fans, and their fans are inspired to write about it.”
At that point, it was true that I didn’t find many albums released in 2020 that I liked. Then I saw a post on Facebook by this random guy, Tim Hinely, about The Vulgar Boatmen. So I liked it, and made a comment referencing that I was the Facebook coordinator of Vulgar Boatmen Awareness Month. (I’m like such a big deal. I was my homeroom monitor in grade school one month also.)
Then I scanned this guy’s profile and noticed that he was into music also. (I had already sent him a friend request. You post about The Vulgar Boatmen and the friend request is instantaneous.) I wasn’t 100% positive that rock and roll was dead, and that I needed to go all in on Prog, so I asked Tim if he liked any albums that came out in 2020.
(Those of you that know Tim may continue reading when you stop laughing hysterically. Take your time.)
I was expecting a few recommendations. He sends me a link to Dagger Zine, his fanzine that has been in operation since 1987, which lists his top 80 albums from 2020. Eighty is not a typo. That is an unthinkable number, unless you review one album per day, which Tim does. I never do this, but I Googled him and learned that he is Tim “Freakin’” Hinely. I’m an idiot that I’d never heard of him. He is the king of the music zines. Single-handedly he is keeping enthusiasm for independent music alive, and I’m asking, “Hey, any recommendations, man?”
I sampled some of the albums on his list, it was a revelation. Rock and roll is not dead. It was my fault. I had not looked hard enough. I feel safe now knowing that Tim is out there keeping watch. I can rest easy knowing that there are more of my people out there than I had imagined. And there are more bands for me to check out than I could ever listen to in three lifetimes or another lockdown.
One more thing from my original post that I think I still need to say to be totally honest.
What prevents me from going totally Prog is what I call the Metal Problem. There is overlap between Prog and Metal. Some people are into Metal and some aren’t. “Pull Me Under” by Dream Theater has 13 million views on YouTube. For me, it triggers post-traumatic stress syndrome from high school (Voorhees HS Class of ’89), but obviously some people enjoy it. When I hear those jack-hammer guitars, I hit the stop button.

Oh mio dio so di essere un corrotto occidentale,ma i primi Devo sono una cosa che reputo più grande
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of Devo’s first shows was a private party supporting Sun Ra, where they were billed as a covers band. They went on in theatre guises and infuriated most of the crowd who left before Sun Ra had a chance to play. In this show they allegedly played ‘Jocko Homo’ for over 30 minutes, during which an audience member took a stage microphone and insulted the band. The show finally ended when a promoter pulled the plug on the power, but a four track recording still managed to catch an argument and fist-fight between Gerald Casale and the promoter.
