When we say fashion, all we think about is style, and glamor rather than sustainability or ethics.
Ever wondered, what do fashion, styling, and clothes have to do with sustainability?
Turns out that the fashion industry is responsible for around 10 percent of the world's annual emission of carbon. It is amongst the most polluting and waste-generating industries.
Here are some fabrics that are most sustainable and eco-friendly in nature with which you can style your wardrobe differently.
So let’s get started!
Organic Cotton
The future is not just in your hands but literally in the dress you wear!

“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak” – A quote by Racheal Zoe, one of the well-known Fashion Designers, holds absolutely true for Chanderi fabric. Known for its glossy transparency and sheer texture, Chanderi is a century-old weaving technique that produces three kinds of fabric – Chanderi silk cotton, pure silk, and Chanderi Cotton.
The uniqueness of Chanderi fabric lies in its beautiful motifs embellished on the fabric. Traditionally, the motifs were inspired mostly by flowers, coins, fruits, peacocks, and heavenly bodies but now we can also find motifs in geometric abstract forms.
These motifs are primarily handwoven on Chanderi fabric with hand-loom by the use of needles. Various needles are used to weave different motifs on one fabric. The motifs of grace stay in the color of the threads used which can be gold, silver, or Copper.
One thing which makes Chanderi the cynosure to our eyes is the vibrant hues of this fabric. The availability of Chanderi in glorious pastel shades adds a sense of freshness and liveliness to the outfit. And this makes it perfect for summer wear.
History and Origin of Chanderi fabric
Coming from the small town of Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, Chanderi fabric has derived its name from this town itself.
According to the known history, Chanderi’s woven tales can be traced back to the 7th Century B.C. when it was woven with handspun cotton for producing turbans for Maratha rulers. It was also a favorite fabric among ancient kings and Maharanis and Chanderi sarees were considered a symbol of royalty. But there are also traces that make us believe that it was first founded by Lord Krishna’s Cousin, Shishupal in the Vedic era.
Around the beginning of the 19th century, weavers switched from hand-spun Cotton to mill-made Cotton because of the less availability of hand-spun Cotton. In 1910, the royal family of Scindia brought Chanderi sarees under their patronage and this is when gold motifs were first embellished on the cotton muslin saree. And the addition of these gold motifs made Chanderi sarees popular among all the royal queens. And this further led to the introduction of Japanese silk which had high margins and that is how Chanderi silk was discovered.
Later in 1970, another type of Chanderi fabric was discovered that was a blend of Cotton and Silk which is actually the most readily available Chanderi available today.
There are Three Things That Fascinate Us Most About The Chanderi Fabric:
Royal Zari Border: Chanderi sarees are embellished with a gold zari border which makes them look even more enticing. And the motifs definitely add more elegance to these Chanderi sarees. It is the evergreen beauty of Zari borders that made these saris a favorite among royalties.
Glossy texture: The lustrous Shine and the transparency of this fabric will not let you stop drooling over this fabric . Be it Chanderi cotton or Chanderi Silk fabric, it will still stand out among all the fabrics because of its sparkling texture.
A Cultural touch: The weaving of Chanderi fabric has been practiced for generations which takes us closer to our traditional heritage.
The motif designs embellished on Chanderi fabrics are so intricate and so unique from each other that every Design tends to tell its own story. And that is why so many fashion designers have been playing with Chanderi.
Chanderi Style diaries
Chanderi has always been popular for designing enticing saris but now it is also used for different clothing purposes and also home decor items like Cushions and Curtains. Let’s take a look at some of the Chanderi dresses created by famous designers:
Sanjay Garg
Sanjay Garg’s Collection “Raw Mango” displayed at Lakme fashion week Summer/Resort 2016 showcased a beautiful blend of Chanderi Silk fabric and nude color palette combined with brighter hues like mustard and green.
It was a total blend of contemporary outfits with a traditional touch. The collection included high waist pants and sarees.
The showstopper of this show was Aditi Rao Hyadri, wearing a beautiful lehenga set by Raw Mango.
Samant Chauhan
Samant Chauhan showcased a timeless collection inspired by the Aryan era. The collection manifests a more modern interpretation of royalty from the bygone era.
Asymmetric silhouettes with cinched waist and a textured movement elaborated the SS17 collection of Samant Chauhan.
The outfit itself spelled femininity with a bit of command and playfulness.
The vintage collection of white canvas painted on Chanderi cotton fabric with floral accents set the summer mood right.

The treasure of art & craft in our country is equivalent to the depth of ocean. Our textile connoisseur keep on exploring these magnificent crafts based on textiles but we just couldn't keep our eyes off the other artforms & that's what gave the idea of Folkscape.
Ranging from the Pichawai Paintings to Warli, Madhubani, Gond Art, Kalighat, & more! we're inspired by all of them. So doing what we do best, we have interpreted our take on these artforms in our Exclusive Folkscape Fabric Collection.
Pichwai
Hailing from Nathdwara (Rajasthan), the Pichwai paintings were created as a means to express devotion. The word Pichwai translates to 'hanging at back' (‘pich’ stands for back and ‘wai’ stands for hanging). The paintings were initially used as background for deities & as decoration on temple walls. Nowadays these paintings form an essential style of home decor, adorning art galleries, museums, & even homes. The artform extends up to accessories, cushion covers, & even clothing.
MAIN CHARACTER & THEME:
Pichwai paintings celebrate Lord Krishna and his surroundings. Depicting scenes of his childhood days, the main characters include Nandi cows, peacocks, lotus and birds. With a vibrant colour palette consisting of green & blue as base & hints of pink, red & white as accents.
FABRICLORE’S INTERPRETATION:
Our Pichwai Inspired Exclusive Collection is accentuated with a digital take on this folk artform. Keeping alive its charm, the vibrant colour palette is perfect for all your daytime attires. The Rayon modal fabric further adds to the lively mood of the collection.
Warli
You must have witnessed this artform once in your life, recall those stick figurines?
Well those are the cherished Warli figures. The tribal art of Warli was initially practised in North Sahyadri Range in Maharashtra. As a means of entertainment & decoration, people used to paint mud walls of their home with rice water paste. These paintings mainly depicted village scenes, everyday activities & folklores.
MAIN CHARACTERS & THEME:
As a distinct feature, Warli art combines various geometric shapes like circles, triangles & lines that creates the human form. A repetition of these figures is used to create beautiful patterns.

Power Quilts! - Quilted Fabrics
The quilt is quintessential in piecing together your next winter fashion trend! If the name doesn't ring any bells, maybe "Puffer Jacket" will paint an image in your mind as to how the fabric looks and feels.
Mind you, there is a cult following for this layered fabric, and its application spans more than just a Puffer Jacket. However, in India, we had no freedom experimenting - considering the unavailability of the quilt as a fabric but only as a readymade garment.
Artistic Freedom is important, and keeping that in mind, we are adding a brand new catalogue of Quilted Fabrics, not as a Trench Coat or as a Vest, but as a raw fabric so that you have all the freedom in the world to build something sassy!
Before you start cutting and stitching, it is important to understand what a Quilt is.
Quilted Fabric
What many thought would end up as a fad, quickly turned out to be one of the most sought-after garments. To give you an idea, Quilted Jackets were trending on Google Trends even during the scorching heat of Summer.
The essence of quilted fabric is its ability to piece together three separate layers of material, which collectively helps in amplifying the aesthetics and functionality.
The top or outer layer holds aesthetic importance as it is the one that is seen, and will shape the overall composition of your outfit. Usually, people prefer floral prints, denim, and striped prints - the material doesn't play an important role here.
The bottom layer is soft and lightweight and is the one that makes contact with your body. There are many options here - but the most popular one is Minky.
In between these two layers, a wadding or insulating material is sandwiched. When all layers are pieced together, often with a diamond pattern, you have a Quilted Fabric!
Why Quilted Fabrics?
I Will keep this one short - Quilts are versatile in the sense, not only does it aid you during the harshest winter months, but it also helps you embellish it - Thanks to its layered build.
Some other characteristics - insulting, lightweight, and waterproof. The qualities, however, do depend heavily on the material used.

Hi my name is Angela but I simply go by the name Angie. I'm 50 years old, and I'm a married mom and grandmother. I started back sewing about 5 years ago after not touching a sewing machine for 30 years. I first learned to sew in High School and I am the only one in my family that knows how to sew.
The desire to return to sewing was always there but somehow life always got in the way. I decided 5 years ago to return to my first love of sewing and have never looked back. I decided shortly after that to share my sewing journey by blogging and sharing on social media and I have absolutely no regrets.
I have teamed up with Fabriclore to create some handmade garments using their beautiful fabric. They have a very wide selection of fabric which includes digitally printed fabric like the one I chose to use.
I chose this beautiful Pure Munga Silk Fabric in this Brown Beige Floral
Print because it reminds me of Autumn Flowers. Where I live gets very cold outside but before it does, we’re blessed with a few very beautiful days of warmth and sun and I just imagined myself creating something that could work both for the Summer months and the beautiful days of Autumn.
Fabric
When I first started back sewing, I was so scared of prints but slowly converted into someone that loves prints and floral prints are one of my favorites.
This Munga Silk fabric is so beautiful, soft, and flowy. I must admit it peaked my interest to work with a fabric that had been digitally designed and delicately handmade.
I pre-treated the fabric by hand washing in cold water and allowed it to hang and dry. This fabric is very lightweight, soft, and has an awesome drape to it which makes it perfect if you decided to create a beautiful dress or blouse.

The kaftans & wrap around dresses carry the essence of being crafted by hand & pair up best with oxidized silver jewellery. The wrap-around pants & skirts with their subtle shades will go well with a white top. And there's not just one way to wear the garments. You can wear the wraparound dress as a dress or as a shrug. Pair them up with chic contemporary accessories & you've got the perfect free-spirit look. However, the collection itself is about liberation, don't let your imagination narrowed down to options here, let it run wild & style Mūkt the way you like, the way you feel Mūkt.

Being a mother is one of the most fulfilling experiences one can have. It is a divine and transforming process that gives you one the most beautiful feeling in the world. But pregnancy also tests the physical limits of one’s body and can cause the expectant mother some discomfort at times. One of the ways to ease the process is by choosing comfortable clothing and fabrics that are well suited to the weather and climate of your town. Hear our say on keeping expecting mothers comfortable. Let's start with Fabrics. The base of any outfit is the perfect fabric. To choose a fabric there are many factors involved such as weather, ease of wear, and comfort level. Here are our top favourites for both summer and winter pregnancies: Summer fabrics ☀️ Linen Linen is a great fabric for hotter climates, owing to its almost weightless nature. It’s the best pick for summers as well, as it allows easy flow of air and keeps the wearer cool due to its porous nature as well as the way the fabric is woven. It’s also good at absorbing sweat and moisture-wicking, which ensures that the fabric will stay dry. Although new and fresh linen is quite stiff, it gets softer as one wears it, much like pure cotton. Cotton Cotton is another favourite summer fabric around the world. It is extremely versatile and is available in a variety of forms, ranging from stretchy t-shirt material to naturally woven cotton. Almost all forms of cotton are good for summer and have lightweight, moisture-wicking properties which are preferred by expectant mothers. But Organic Cotton tops the chart when it comes to softness & skin-friendliness. Give it a try! Rayon A smooth & flowy fabric, Rayon is a synthetically generated fabric that uses natural sources such as wood pulp and cellulose. It is a very soft, light and absorbent material, & can easily be manipulated into different dress patterns. There's more to rayon, the antimicrobial touch. Antimicrobial Fabric essentially resists the hazardous microbes and prevent them from getting accumulated in our cloth surface. You can read more about it here. Another gem of safety with comfort & flowy fall. Winter Fabrics ❄️
Flannel Fabric
Flannel is a woven fabric that often uses a mix of cotton and wool yarns. It’s extremely soft and is often used to make sleepwear, blankets and throws owing to its comfort. Flannel is a perfect fabric for winter pregnancies as it gives one the effect of wearing Pajamas all day long, and who doesn’t want that! Flannel is a great choice as it is durable and with the right clothing choices, it can last well past the first pregnancy. Wool Wool is the natural choice for winter wear, and winter maternity clothes are no exception. The fabric is thick and woven in a way to resist cold weather and ultimately keep both the mother and the baby warm and happy. There are different varieties of wool, with different fibre blends. While 100% wool might make our skin irritated, a blend of cotton, silk, etc can make it feel better for the skin & keep you warm. Denim Denim is a good fabric for withstanding the cold, and is now widely available in a number of varieties, including ultra-stretch denim and poly-denim mix fabrics. This is favoured by expecting mothers owing to the comfort of fit and the durability of the material. Don't forget Denim's classic charm that will keep you feeling trendy. Now that we’ve covered the best fabric choices to adorn you during your pregnancy, here are some of our favourite dress patterns and silhouettes for expecting and new mothers alike! Shirt dress or Shift dress This is best for summer with fabrics such as cotton and linen, as it allows the wearer to stay cool and breezy. It is also perfect for maternity wear, as the boxy silhouette accommodates the bump with ease. Shirt dresses are also very practical as postnatal clothing and are nursing friendly. The best part? They can be worn casually even after the pregnancy, and you can add some oomph to the outfit by accessorizing with a belt! Empire Waist A close-fitting just beneath the bust is what we call an Empire Waist. Both, empire waist dresses and Kurtis are great options for a fancy maternity outfit, and flowing pleats add some elegance to the outfit. They are also good for maternity wear as they comfortably nestle the bump with a flowy grandeur. If you have celebrations lined up, this design will add-on to your maternity glow. Pro Tip: Go for Floral designs, it will complement the flow of your attire. Ethnic Touch We can't do without our love for ethnic wear & pregnancy pushes us to pick comfort over style. But don't worry you don't have to compromise on your look. We have picked the 3 best ethnic silhouettes Angrakha style Kurti Fared Peplum with palazzo Anarkali with jacket A lightweight fabric like Chanderi silk fabric or Organza will give a subtle shine to your look while keeping the garment weight in check. Tank top and Tank dresses A great pick for the summer, Tank tops or dresses is the best casual option. A tank top goes well with comfortable loose skirts and pants, while tank dresses go well with leggings. For chilly weather, you can team it up with more layers like jackets, shrugs & shawls. Get these versatile attires tailormade with your favourite fabrics as they will suit you post-maternity too. Just add a chic waist belt & stay in vogue with your little one. Tell us in the comments below which fabric is the most comfortable for you.

Showers of hope - they say, the hope of getting respite from the scorching heat of summer we endured. While the monsoon does lie close to our hearts, at times, it may play spoilsport, and mind you, there's no "reserve day" when it comes to life. Like many say, fashion is "outrageous" during difficult times, and monsoon is not far from being called one. We have seen how difficult it is for us during these months to decide what to wear. So, to help you out, we have put together a list of top trends for this Monsoon - helping you make the right choice, and flaunting the latest fashion trends while doing so!
Moderately light, Adequately dry Fabrics
Indian moms are ignorant towards Jeans during monsoon. Because they are well aware of its heavy build - making it almost impossible to dry it overnight, if it does - it will be accompanied by a mushy odour. Hence it is better to wear light fabrics which stay dry all through.

The Pattern
The Ashton top pattern has two views. A hip length (view A) and a cropped version (view B). Both views have bust darts and an A-line shape which gives it a very relaxed yet flattering look. The pattern also gives you 2 different options of finishing the neckline and armholes depending on how you like your garments finished!
This pattern would look great with both pants and skirts. Check out all the versions of it on Instagram using the hashtag #ashtontop . There is an option to add sleeves to this pattern if you choose to buy the sleeve expansion pack (also on sale until May 31st 2021 with the same discount code fabriclore2021ashton). (Helen has a great eye for simple wearable designs that fit well in your everyday wardrobe. She also grades her designs to fit a large size range making her sewing patterns very inclusive. Importantly, she is excellent at writing out very detailed instructions which is perfect for beginners. Check out all her patterns on Helen’s Closet )
Helen has generously given all Fabriclore customers a 20% discount code on the Ashton top pattern. USE CODE: fabriclore2021ashton during checkout at the Helen’s Closet website. This code will be valid for both the Ashton top and the sleeve expansion pack. The code is valid until May 31st, 2021. With such a classic design, this pattern can be easily hacked into many different garments. For my second post, I have hacked the Ashtop top into a dress! Look out for the next post! One of most versatile and fun part of garment sewing is being able to understand what looks good on your body and make the changes to the garment accordingly. I am short waisted. This means that the distance between my waist and my hips is shorter than average. Therefore, for most garments, I have to shorten the bodice for it to fit well. For short-waisted people like myself, garments that hit just above your high hips is very flattering. I therefore prefer to wear more cropped tops. For this post, I chose to make View B, the cropped version. I also chose to finish the neckline and armhole using the bias binding method.
The Fabric
For a beginner sewist, cotton textiles are the easiest to work with for garment making. Not only is it the best kind of fabric for the summer, but it is also one of the most sustainably made fabrics worldwide. The Fabriclore collection has so many beautiful cotton fabrics to choose from. For this pattern, I chose to use a lovely washed Ikat fabric with a chevron design.
The fabric is lightweight with great color saturation. It has a light hand and drape and would work well for so many different kinds of woven garments. I highly recommend trying out this fabric. Importantly, cotton fabrics are wonderful to handle while sewing. Pressing and steaming cotton while sewing is a total dream! That’s said, the Ashton top would look wonderful in any woven fabric. A lovely rayon or Tencel will make this top stand out and give it a different silhouette.
Tools needed
The tools needed to sew this garment is pretty similar to any sewing project. Here is a list along with what it is used for. For Sewing -
A sewing machine: No fancy sewing machine I needed to sew garments. As long as the machine can sew a straight stitch and a zig zag stitch you are good to go.
A serger (optional): A serger, or an overlocker, is a machine that will finish the seams while cutting the fabric edge evenly at the same time. If you don’t have a serger, you can use an overcast stitch or a zig zag stitch on your regular sewing machine.
Needles: For your sewing machine and extra needles of different sizes (different fabrics will need different types of needles).
Thread: I like to use all sew gutterman thread for most garments. These are strong polyester thread.
Pins: to hold your fabric in place while sewing

Massoom Minawala Mehta
When Masoom began her journey of blogging it was still a very new career choice, still she managed to find her ground & has come to a fanbase close to a million. But what do we love most about her? A series #THEINDIAILOVE stole our heart. Talking about our traditions & customs while giving it the feel today's youth desires, she is finding the balance between our roots & the branches that extend to the west.
Ishita Mangal
If there's anything valued more than straight-forward content is adding a quirky angle to all the information you are serving. I remember Ishitas's last reel not just because it was a hit styling trick but because of the flavour of humour, she added to it. How much can you really consume when it's just about what to wear & how to wear it? But when added with a punch of sarcasm & humour, the quintessential entertainment we seek all day long is achieved. & like she may say if comedy is all you seek then rather listen to a stand-up comedian.
Sakshi Sindwani
While the conversation to understand body positivity intensifies Sakshi takes every moment to celebrate herself. For a major portion of decades, we have grown up seeing a particular mould of the physique that is ideal for every dress, curves were not seen as an element of beauty. But have you seen her? If anyone needs the confidence to wear what you please, she is the one to look up for. More than what dress you wear, its important to wear confidence with it.
Ranveer Allahbadia
Do you feel good when you look good? Yes, it happens but where do you even get the motivation to look good? Ranveer is the go-to person for motivation. and there's the icing on the cake with health & style tips, what more could you ask for. You eat well, train hard & look good - that's all the inspiration you need to look amazing from the inside. And when it reflects outside, you're sure to turn heads.
Sejal Kumar
Last not the least, Sejal Kumar. Growing in terms of follower count isn't as fascinating as having a fanbase that has grown with you. Still too young, but when Sejal started her video blogging journey a lot many people connected with her & continue to do so even today. What works? I believe when you are staying true to what your heart says while being aware of your responsibility as a content creator, people will always be there. Coming up with campaigns like #maiaisihun to inspire women to accept themselves & be fearless in their decision making, she is inspiring us along with laying out her meticulous fashion & styling tips.
