Everything op said. It's like the majority population has started thinking in line with corporate interests. Results, numbers, speed. When art is all about the journey. The learning process. Why speed through everything? Art is valuable not only for the end result of it, but the thinking and intention that goes into the creation of it. Every little thought that influences it. Ai can give you the end result with one sentence from you. And in doing so, it strips you and the result from any real depth and intention because you never reach that part of the process. Because there is no process anymore. Just a sentence and a button and waiting for the machine to drop whatever it makes of your sentence. And that's just one part of the issues with using generative ai.

A gentle word about ai, history, archaeology, and art.

This isn’t necessarily fandom based but it is related. With the rise of ai we are seeing a rapid shift in various spaces (academic, professional, creative) towards the integration and use of ai. While some of it can be a useful tool made to assist and alleviate workload, it should never be used in the place of a human in creative endeavors. I go into depth on my thoughts and some history below.

I’ve mentioned in passing before that story is sense making. And trowels and scales has become my test subject regarding my own thoughts and exploration on various topics. Repatriation, the racist history of archaeology, relationship dynamics, honesty, etc.

And with the rise of generative ai I plan on including a scene inspired by a conversation I had with a dear friend of mine.

Some information about me, I volunteered at a local museum all my years of college in order to gain experience for a job post graduation. It was small. A local Appalachian museum ran by folks who were born and raised mostly lower class. These were the kinds of folks who were asking about my mama and hugging me tight when the world just wasn’t quite right. I know museums have a reputation of untouchability, but my experience couldn’t be any different.

One day, a dear friend of mine visited while I was volunteering. There was an exhibit of local artists and social commentary, and some of the work was a bit abstract. The two of us discussed history, art, the concept of the freedom of speech worldwide.

And ai.

At one point, she looked at me and asked what the point was when Ai could do any of this. My sarcastic, joking response was “Well. It didn’t.” But I did elaborate.

Art is human. To create intentionally is human. Art isn’t just the end result, it is the process. It is a process as old as humanity itself. And art has to mean something. Im not saying that to be uppity. All art says something. It can be something profound, a critique on the systems that exist.

And sometimes all the art says is “Hi. I’m here. I was here. I’m still here.”

In my personal (but historically informed) opinion, our first example of artwork isn’t a marble statue or some figurine for the gods.

It’s the handprints found high up in a secluded cave. Showing someone had to get help to get that high. That person dipped their hand in ochre and reached up high. You’re welcome to disagree. But as far as I’m concerned, the oldest forms of art in the world simply say “Hi. I’m here. I was here. I’m still here.”

Ai cannot do that. Ai can never have the soul behind it to do that. Not in art. And especially not in writing.

My honors thesis was on women in war in the ancient Middle East. My foundational argument was that women served in positions of power regarding conflict in both traditional and non traditional ways. And the first chapter was on Enheduanna.

The first known author in the world. To our knowledge, at least.

The first known author in the world is a woman. Reading her works was something otherworldly to me. And we might find someone some day that is even older who claimed their works before she did, but for now she is the first we know of.

She and the scribes who came before and after her went through the painstaking process of learning to write cuneiform. They documented stories passed down via the oral tradition, cementing one version in time in one stone tablet.

Not to mention the countless other cultures as they developed writing systems and their oral tradition.

These stories make up humanity. They make up our history, our drive, our art, our culture. And ai can never replicate that.

Go and create. Do it without the skill. Do it while angry. Do it while sad. But do something. Write. Dance. Sing. Draw. Anything you create will have infinitely more soul than anything ai could do. Because it is uniquely and quintessentially yours.

And even if you don’t have anything you’re trying to say, if some archaeologist came hundreds or thousands of years later, the heart of the message will remain. Be it a handprint or a cry for help to a goddess. “I am here. I was here. I’m still here.”

I'm sorry are we playing completely different games? 😭 As if Raf didn't fall on top of MC and proceeded to get tackled to the floor by her literally the second time RafMC met in the main timeline 😭😭

I get something not being everyone's cup of tea (I'm not the biggest enthusiast of an LI being carried by MC either, it's just not something I would find myself doing) but it's still fun?? Some people like it? Why try to ruin it for everyone just because YOU don't like something 😭

This is VERY in character of Rafayel. Anyone who says it's OOC gives me the impression that they simply don't understand his character at all.

I don't get why Rafayel's masculinity is always questioned, especially recently. His character is very very well written and well executed. Rafayel is a Lemurian. Their customs and social norms are different from human society. It makes sense that Lemurians probably don't define gender norms the way humans still do. By dismissing the depth of his character, we're only proving how narrow minded human norms can be.

Boxing him (or any of the other characters) into stereotypes of masculine or feminine according to our personal judgements and demanding that they behave in one particular way just strips the characters of what makes them them.

On that note, I love MC's outfits- they've definitely done much better in the past but I can't complain she still looks amazing!! Sylus's MC especially I ADORE her outfit it's so cute 😭

I truly don't care about 'spicy' beach banner. I want a beach banner where Sylus wears an open patterned shirt, board shorts and sunglasses pushed up his head. Where the twins are carrying armfuls of beach toys and thrilled about another new experience with their boss-man. Where they bury him in sand because he begrudgingly agrees if it means he can just stop hearing them babbling on about everything.

Where they leave him there to go get ice cream (and totally don't pay for it), so when Sylus frees himself with his evol he finds his kids on the run from the guy running the ice cream truck, and has to pay for them, bonk them over the head, and then comes back to his parasol to relax and read a book while they practice their water gun skills. (He'll join in later.)
