Sophie Lancaster has been on my mind as of late.
The reason why the popularization of goth culture has been so damaging and why it makes me so angry and upset, is because most of these people who do it for views/attention/money (Alt bop house, lol) do not understand the violence and unwarranted hate most of us had to face for being ourselves- and still do.
People fetishize and treat us like novelty online just for existing. And in real life, we still face the same kind of alienation we always did.
So when someone says that goth/alt culture becoming normalized is good for us- it really isn't. Because now, instead of just hatred and violence, we have a new layer we need to worry about, which is fetishization.
It's like we can never win.

Want to add: "No matter what you wear, you're still accepted by the subculture. Straight, gay, male, female, punk, industrial, even metal, one is always welcomed." - from the book Goth: Vamps and Dandies.
Being goth is about celebrating celebrating being free of societal rules and expectations.
Boot licking is probably the most antithetical thing you can do.
Homophobia and transphobia are not goth
Nazis are not goth
Racism is not goth
Misandrists and misogynists are not goth
Religious discrimination is not goth
Fatphobia is not goth
Fascism is not goth
Abliesm is not goth
Goth is a place for us to appreciate gothic music, interests and subculture but it should also be a place where all people are safe.
Goth is for everyone except bigots.
