"No, a crow would be more fitting," he squinted, failing to contain a cheeky grin as he tilted his head, pretending to examine the taller man's face, "but your eye bags are making me lean more towards raccoon."

Then he pretended to think, supporting his left arm by the elbow, with a hand raised to tap his forefinger against his bottom lip, "Raccoons eat trash though, you're not implying you would eat that, are you? It doesn't look very tasty."

He dropped the act at the reminder, sighing with dramatized weariness as he looked into the distance, "Go back, write a report," he paused, turned his head to look back into ruby red eyes, "Food first, would you mind if I bothered you for suggestions?"

Casual intimacy with Sylus

The mission had ended with the clang of steel and the low hiss of cooling machinery. The abandoned refinery loomed in silence now—no longer a battleground, just another forgotten place. Dust hung in the shafts of late afternoon light piercing through broken skylights. Sylus stood off to the side,eyes tracing the rusted catwalks above as if memorizing the layout for no reason but his own quiet amusement.

His coat fluttered faintly in the breeze sweeping through the ruin, the grime and debris of the fight clinging stubbornly to its hem.

“Hold still,” came Ilkay’s voice, calm and almost casual.

Sylus turned his head slightly, one brow lifting—but he didn’t pull away as Ilkay reached up to brush through his hair. There was the faintest twitch at the corner of his mouth, an amused glint flickering through his eyes. His gaze stayed fixed just beyond the other man, but there was an undeniable awareness in him now, a stillness that hinted at curiosity.

“You’re either very bold,” Sylus said, voice low and smooth, “or very sure I won’t bite.”

He tilted his head slightly, just enough to make the gesture easier—whether for Ilkay’s benefit or his own, it was hard to say. “Did I collect a souvenir from the fight?” he mused, lips curving faintly.

And then, quieter, more thoughtful as he finally turned his gaze to meet Ilkay’s directly, “...You’re attentive. Not a bad trait for someone in your line of work.”

A pause. A breath. He brushes a hand through his hair where Ilkay’s touch has passed, eyes meeting Ilkay’s with a spark of something genuine. “I’m not offended, though. In fact, I rather like this… gentler approach.”

"Perfect," he procured a plate, a decent slice of the flan already on it, and held it towards him along with some cutlery, "Here you go, mister, bone apple teeth."

He busied himself so as not to appear too expectant of his reaction, trying really hard not to stare and watch every minuscule detail.

I've tried my fair share of sweets, but that doesn't mean I've tried all.

For example, I'm sure I've missed many traditional desserts from specific parts of the world that I haven't visited.

Not to mention, there are many flavors. To have tasted each and every one... I should be a professional food sampler full time, instead of a doctor.

And there is the fact that... some of them are made with carrots as an ingredient, and I'd prefer to avoid them.

Chapter 2: Lost

The catastrophe brought forth many losses.

His sister, his home, and his mother. 

After a few years of searching, they left what was now the N109 zone. What was once a bustling technology hub had slowly turned into a lawless land. 

He was 11 the first time his parents fought. Over moving, nonetheless. He came home injured, a cut on his face and a bleeding right hand, scrapes and cuts all over his knuckles. His first fight. 

When he was younger, he had hoped, quietly, secretly, unknowingly, that it would be over defending his sister. And maybe it came true, but the most important part of it was missing. 

He didn't come home to her. He didn't smile and say “It's what family does, we protect each other” or some other thing that would make him seem cool and make her stomp her foot in protest. 

Instead he came home to worried parents. Instead he swallowed back angry tears and said, “They talked about her and made fun of her. I couldn't ignore it.” and his mother tended to his wounds. 

His parents fought that night, she wanted to move, he wanted to stay and keep searching. 

He didn't get to act like an annoying older brother that abuses the weakness an injury brings. Merely gritted his teeth and powered through the pain as he got ready to go back to school under the worry of his mother's gaze and the tension on his father's shoulders.

More arguments came, more fights happened at school. 

The glass cracked and cracked and cracked, until it couldn't take it anymore and shattered.

A few months later, they suffered a wanderer attack that forced them to move to Linkon city. His mother was left gravely injured and Ilkay had a gash that ran across his torso. 

His father had been the only one in his room when he woke up, holding his hand as he prayed for both of them.

He spent his 12th birthday accompanying his mother for her physical therapy.

She died soon after his 13th birthday.

He turns towards the woman "whispering" to her friend. It doesn't seem like subtlety is her forte.

"My mother's, actually, she died two weeks ago."

And, oh, the way the color drains from her face.

He doesn't stay any longer, simply turns to walk away and covers his mouth, trying his hardest to not laugh.

That's mean, it's a mean fucking joke, especially with his mom being actually dead. In his defense, she's the one that taught him about dark humor so, maybe she'd be proud.

He chuckles about it during check out, laughs as hard as he wants once he makes it to his car and giggles on the rest of the way home.
