WATCH OUT it’s a BLOG! Lots of opinions mostly on fandom culture Will also include posts for specific fandoms but not always, I want to keep this mostly a discussion and ~opinion blog~. my main blog that I've had for 10+ years is destined to be a 'reblog' centre, this has some personality

I know I'm telling on my self but I'm having so much fun reading Dune. It's been a while since I got engrossed in a book this good and the worldbuilding I miss reading stuff of this calibre.

I'm so disappointed in the amount of people that labeled the Superman movie as pro-Palestine or anti-Israel it isn't?
It's a very generic Oppressed People vs The Oppressor which will obviously apply to the Palestinian struggle but by portraying Boravia (vaguely East European) and Jarhanpur (vaguely Indian) it greatly misses the mark. If that was the intention, which Gunn has denied but idk tbh, then why is the stand in for Palestine a country in Europe and vaguely Indian? Why does this always happen with Hollywood Arab and Indian cultures are not substitutes and the oppression faced both globally and in Western countries is different. There was no mention of religion or the infamous
It felt like a mishmash of Ukraine and Palestine to me more than anything. it misses the mark of what makes the Palestine struggle what it is. It makes no effort to portray that a country is losing it's borders and territory and the powers that be were insisting they had no history prior to a certain date and then weaponising fear of the other and religion to rally indifference.
Jarhanpur as a stand in for Palestine was so Orientalist that every time we saw the Jarhanpur people it just broke my immersion, especially when the connections to Palestine were getting stronger and stronger.
I don't normally throw the term orientalist around and am normally a bit more lax about these things, but it was absolutely an orientalist movie and if the intention was to portray the Palestinian struggle then it failed spectacularly.
So no I don't like this specific praise. What the movie does well is showing things from the American POV and how the state apparatus and private sector will go to lengths to protect oppressive regimes until it's no longer viable and the US state will never get held accountable for that.
Unironically the Black Adam movie does a much better job because because it humanises the characters by portraying their opinions and feelings on what's going on in their country. It's a bit closer the conflict itself but honestly it works as an analogy for any MENA country dealing with the US invading it. It's a far from perfect movie in that regards and employs it's own orientalist tropes but it's leagues ahead of what the Superman 2025 movie did.

Yes exactly!
I'll add an example to hopefully cement why you really need to check out the media yourself and come to your own conclusion, reading other people's thoughts is helpful but you need to decide for yourself at times.
I noticed that when the discussion revolves around Muslim (esp women) representation, "muslimtok" or any adjacent communities will call out or label a show as problematic is the character is a a less than a perfect conservative Muslim.
It's one of the things I find very novel about Western portrayals at times, there's no religious or moral authority browbeating creatives. Yes it's icky and messy because people are messy and complicated but a hijabi character drinking alcohol is not islamophobic nor is orientalist and def not an endorsement of that behaviour.
Ladybits, while it doesn't have female characters drinking alcohol, has a colourful cast of characters that heavily deviate from the norm. I haven't even seen a portrayal like this in my own Muslim-majority country (which usually has female character deviating from the norm at a rate that would send these conservatives in a frenzy). Online it was pretty much attacked and labelled as offensive because the characters played music and don't you know? That's Islamophobic! The West is trying to cause ruin in our own countries and diaspora communities because female characters playing music! Oh the shame!!! so haram!!
So yes you really do need to go out of your own way to interact with the thing and see if it's offensive lest you be swarmed with conservatives telling you how to think, even though you would never give the time of day to conservatives in your own country/community.
"can someone tell me if this show is offensive?" "do you guys think this ship is problematic-"
i am begging you to go and find the answers for these questions yourself. stop asking other people to do literary analysis for you. think critically. figure out yourself if you like that ship, or if you like that show. stop letting your joy be determined by majority vote.
yes, stay safe, look up trigger warnings, ask friends for help avoiding specific things you know will make you viscerally uncomfortable - but if you've already watched the show, you don't need to be asking people if it's ok for you to like it. make up your own damn mind!

It's such an unnecessary line but also feels very late 2010s.
Diana just needs to deliver it while directly facing the camera .

I'm still seething about the JL Throne of Atlantis movie.
This was supposed to be Aquaman's movie. The comic itself does not center the JL. There was no reason for the JL to have as much focus as they did
And it's not like Aquaman receives much attention in JL stories in general, which is reflected in the later movies.
Don't even get me started with Mera but at least she has a nice design.

Even though the lack of any sea motifs (no starfish???) makes her look like an Artemis knockoff.

Words cannot describe how much I hated the whole DC animated multiverse stint and I'm glad it's dead.
I remember when it dawned to me while I was watching Batman: Hush (2019) where they throw in Lex Luthor for some reason where he shares a scene with Batman and they reference previous events from another movie.
I was legitimately going to close the movie.
On top of changing (the admittedly weak) mystery to surprise the fans (mind you the only people watching these movies most likely read the comics) I was left feeling pretty sour tbh.
It's a shame because I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Hush (2002) comic.
Before Flashpoint Paradox (2013), the DC animated movies felt like a real treat to me, and I imagine to other comic fans. It was the closest to experiencing watching an anime adaptation of a manga or light novel, barring some exceptions.
I loved how each movie had it's own art style, better yet when it was using the art style of the comic it's adapting like Justice League Frontier (2008)

The stars have aligned and my interest in DC/Marvel comics is back! At this rate I should start tracking when it arrives and the levels of intensity I experience.
While I haven't watched the new Superman movie, I started watching the animated movies from DC.
