idk thinking about how sometimes you have to show up for people you aren't that close to, because sometimes you're just the person who's there. sometimes you invite a new friend to a party and end up having to sit with them through a panic attack. sometimes you run into an acquaintance on their worst day and they need to talk about what happened. sometimes someone is crying in a stairwell and you're the only one around to ask if they're okay. and none of this is "trauma dumping" or whatever the fuck it's just being there for people because you're the one in the room with them.

a crash crash course on the golden age of hollywood
to state the obvious, this is not meant to be a be all end all guide. it’s just a start for people who wanna know more about some of the essentials of the era. there’s plenty of people and movies i didn’t include but at least now you can listen to vogue and understand all the references.

Fantasy Guide to Worldbuilding
People of your Land
You have built your world, congratulations. Now to fill it. With people . I dislike people. This is why I created my own fantasy worlds. We get to say who goes and who stays. We are the Thanos of my world, but I’d never hurt my babies (*peter, sobs*).
Sadly, we are going to have to use some of my Geography notes, so sit tight and enjoy some Leaving Cert level info.
Some things to remember
Population density: How many live where? Cities will usually be choked full of people. Towns will be full and villages sparsely populated. There are reasons for this.
Push and pull: People tend to go where the stuff. Pull factors are usually food, water, peace, jobs and shelter. Push factors push people away. These are usually war, famine, disease and occupational: the four horsemen basically. Explore why people gather where they do.
People
Daily life: What is the daily routine for your subjects people? What do they do when they get up? Where do they go? What do they do in their spare time? Make up a time sheet to help you and give you an idea.
Rank: Who is in what station in life? Is there a rank system? Perhaps there are peasants and nobles. Or maybe there’s a caste system. Or feudal system. How do characters feel about their rank.
Jobs: Some jobs may be desirable like king and some may be total shit fests like customer service. Jobs fit the land. On an island, fishing and water jobs may be common. In a forest village, forestry or cabin building. I will put up a list at a later date.
Clothes: What do they wear? Clothes seem a boring part of this process but it can be fun. Borrow from history and mix and match. Are there clothing laws? What are clothes made out of? Are they dyed? What colour is common? Clothes fit with climate and what resources they have.
Appearance: Remember kids. Whitewashing is a crime. If you are writing about a desert land, your characters cannot physically be caucasian unless they moved there from a colder place. Please don’t whitewash.

how to sound more like a french native speaker 🌿
The following points are 5 classic French conversational techniques and mannerisms to help you sound just a bit more truly français:
1. The tactical use of bah
Fairly difficult to translate, the French bah is used rather regularly and can make your speech pattern sound very authentic.
In answer to an obvious question perhaps:
“Tu aimes bien la pizza?” (Do you like pizza?)
“Bah oui, bien sur!” (Well, yes, of course!)
Or something like the following:
“Tu adores le brocoli?” (Do you love broccoli?)
“Bah non! Je déteste!” (No, I hate it!)
Or as a deep, elongated syllable to fill gaps while you think:
“Qu’est-ce que tu fais le weekend?” (What are you doing on the weekend?)
“Baaaaaahh, en fait je ne sais pas encore.” (Well…actually I don’t know yet)
2. Add quoi to the ends of sentences
This one is also not easy to translate, but it would be the French equivalent of “whatever” or “innit.” So, you might imagine that it shouldn’t be used when talking formally, but it’s used often in casual conversation and can perfectly round off a sentence.
“C’est quoi, ça?” (What is that?)
“Euuh, je ne sais pas exactement mais je pense que c’est une sorte de nourriture, quoi.” (Um, I’m not really sure but I think it’s a type of food or whatever.)
3. Using eh, ah and hein like there’s no tomorrow
Whether it’s to fill space while you think or to provoke a response, these elongated vowels are very useful when speaking French. They can be heard very often in conversation.
For example, in English we add “don’t you?”/ “aren’t you?”/ “isn’t it?” to the end of statements to toss the conversational ball back into the other person’s court. The French will simply say “hein?”
“Il fait beau aujourd’hui hein?” (It’s nice weather today isn’t it?)
Try it with raised eyebrows for added French effect.
4. Sufficient use of voilà here, there and everywhere
The slangy English phrases “so, yeah” or “so, there you go” would probably be best translated into French as “voilà.”
When you can’t think of anything else to say at the end of a sentence, you can’t go wrong with a voilà. Sometimes even two. Voilà voilà.
5. Not forgetting the classic French shrug
In response to a question to which you don’t know the answer, respond the French way with an exaggerated shrug, raised eyebrows and add a “baaah, je sais pas, moi!” for good measure.

Lesser seen french tips
These are a few things that i think might be relevant to language learners that i don’t think I’ve seen on langblr! At the end of the day it’s whatever works for you, but i hope these might be helpful 💙
🗼pouvoir, vouloir and aller (to be able, to want and to go) are really useful verbs to learn confidently. If you want to use a verb you don’t know how to conjugate, you can often follow one of these verbs conjugated with the infinitive to express something similar. It’s always better that than guessing a conjugation!
🗼watch videos of french people speaking english! Most french people will still impose a little bit of french pronunciation even while speaking really good english, and this highlights french pronunciation that you wouldn’t notice in a person speaking fluent french.
🗼for me, reading simple YA novels written originally in french is actually more beneficial than translated english books that I’m familiar with. This will prevent you from reading by assumption/context/memory. Also, french books tend to be more culturally relevant, and include phrasing and idioms that are more typically french.
🗼contradiction of my last point, but try watching shows originally in your native language with french audio and subtitles. For some reason, it’s far easier for me to understand and i know many people struggle with listening to french. Netflix often has the option of picking the language of your show, i would highly recommend this if you struggle to understand french films/shows.
🗼quizlet is the most effective method of learning vocab I’ve found! For me, writing out flashcards takes a long time, and typing in the answers solidifies spelling better than just repeating the words.
🗼if you’re someone who struggles with pronunciation, some people find it helpful to have someone who doesn’t speak the language read aloud in it, as it highlights typical errors that a speaker of your language will make (and will probably make you feel good about yourself lbh)
🗼practise just speaking aimlessly in the language, be it to yourself, your pet, or even just while thinking. It’ll help you practise coming up with things to say on the spot, and when you screech to a halt because you don’t know how to express something, you’ll know what vocab it’ll be useful for you to learn next.

I just had some...thoughts... about sticking animal heads on human shoulders. Bear with me.
I think the reason some anthros look really strange (I’m looking at you, Skyrim) is because animal skulls don’t attach to their spines the same way ours do. Our spines and skulls are very vertical, but many animals’ are closer to horizontal.

Some people solve this by giving the animal skulls a human skull shape on the back. But, to me it makes them look somehow bald(??) and just kinda weird in general. If, instead, you change their necks to curve so that the spine still connects where their four legged counterparts’ do, they no longer look yucky! (And also don’t need a hair-do!)

This seems especially applicable for animals like big cats, cows, and lizards — animals whose spines attach very horizontally to their heads.

Anyway, enjoy some more art I did while having these very specific thoughts.

jokes to make after failure that aren’t self-deprecating:
I’m the best to ever do it
Nobody saw that (best if said loudly)
No one’s ever done it like me
I could be President/they should make me President
Behold, a mere fraction of my power!
The public wants to be me soooooo bad
I’m an expert in (thing you just failed at)
How could this have happened to god’s favorite princess?
Nothing ibuprofen and a glass of water cant fix
I’m being sabotaged
#i can't tell if these are deliberately trumpisms or not#< now that you say it.#im glad i exist far away from him that i never hear his voice. reading transcripts is more than enough to melt my brain
