Final Project - Reflection

This project was a very fun and exciting experience, I got to interact with a lot of people and work with people I didn’t know at all. I was surprised to see that people don’t need to know you to help you, all the people that came and waited for 15 minutes for me to help them were very excited to get their pictures taken. The vibes in the studio were very exciting, all my subjects were complementing each other on their hair, sharing their treatment methods or how they would hold their hair when they sleep... The dynamics of the shooting process were fun. One of the main challenges in this project was that I had to adapt to the limited resources we have in the studio regarding the flash. I got a lot of help in my first shooting trial from Sherif in the MassCommunication Department, when I got 2 friends of mine to test on them my first round of shooting. The 2nd round was the official shooting time and the ones I used the pictures from. For my second shooting I was already better acquainted with the studio and the light facilities we have. I knew how to solve the flash when it bugged in the middle of me shooting with one of my subjects.

On another hand, during the editing and printing process, things were much smoother, because I asked Yasmeen Shahin and Dr. Close for guidance from the beginning before printing. I didn’t want to print with any material or at a random place, my goal was to prepare the best presentation to reflect as much as I could the Curly Heads Project as a whole.

Project Idea Proposal #2

My initial proposal will be very difficult to execute with minimal resources and limited time.

So I decided to pick a new idea. The idea is Portrait of Curly Heads I will recruit 12 people who identify their hair as Curly. Not Frizzy, nor Wavy. They will be asked to express in 3 different shots #HowDoYouFeelWithYourCurls? I will try to shoot in total 12 girls, each 3 times, so a total of 36 pictures. Each girl will pick the picture that represents how she feels about her hair the most.

Why this Idea? I used to have very straight and thick hair up until I was 6 years old, then something happened, I was happy with my curls for a while but then as I grew older between the age of 13 and 18 I wasn’t comfortable with my hair and I used to dislike it a lot. recently I went out of my comfort zone and I started to make an effort to accept the nature of my hair and explore ways to style it. Everyday my hair, gives off a different vibe to people on how I feel or how I am, and that’s what I want to show. The diversity of feelings in a similarity of specific appearance characteristic.
