DPS Mock-Ups
These were generated using a template in order to give a realistic feel and create a clean mock-up. This slowed me to visualise the outcomes in there intended conseptual format.

FINAL DPS
Overall I am pleased with my final outcomes they fulfil the brief to my desired extent. I am particularly pleased with the way that the final double page spreads echo my research.
For example the titles of my pages express the style of Self Service magazine and the recurring themes throughout. The title phrases I have used express the desired theme I wanted to capture throughout my shoot and the magazine as a whole. The themes of Isolation and seclusion are particularly prevalent in recent times due to the current global pandemic and subsequent quarantine guidelines. However initially I intended to express the emotion captured in Picasso’s artwork Guernica in relation to the impacts war has on individuals.
A key part of my research into Picasso’s artwork Guernica was the initial affect the colour palette had on me and the way I felt it expressed sadness and despair due to the isolating nature of war. This is something I made sure to keep consistent through my overall outcomes in order to maintain a similar sense of emotion. In order to work to this aesthetic I stuck to black and white filters and purposefully chose an overcast day to shoot on location. Furthermore the colours of my clothing were representative of this aesthetic as well as drawing inspiration from current trends and the seasonal catwalks.
The styling of my models was intentionally made to reflect the androgynistic style. This was also similarly inspired by the Guernica artwork and the general overarching themes of war and isolation and the way in which it impacts everyone equally. The hair styling was inspired by Fendi Spring 21 Couture show who also seemed to express a particularly androgynistic aesthetic. The makeup was kept minimal in order to maintain this look other than the bold yet simplistic shape of the on trend double winged eyeliner. I wanted to draw attention to the eyes of the model as the Guernica artwork continually displays a focus of eyes throughout the piece.
Due to the exclusive nature of Self Service magazine and it’s biannual release I thought it would be the perfect magazine to replicate for my final outcomes. The magazine stood out to me because of its use of lesser known artist and models as well as its mix of really famous creatives. Self Service is particularly interesting as it allowed room to explore new ideas and push boundaries, giving me to freedom to create a piece that was both minimalistic and refined as well as expressing a deeper meaning. I utilised similar fonts and layouts in order to maintain Self Services aesthetic.

Cut Out Edits
Here I cut out my model from two of my photos. I used the polygonal lasso too to make a selection around the model and then removed the inverse of the selection.
For the final outcomes I created them in photoshop. This enabled me to easily export my outcomes to my desired file types. I generated type and shape in vector format on illustrator in order to maintain scailability.

Final Ideas
These are my 4 final DPS ideas. I have gone for quite a different look on each page. For the first page I am thinking to have quite a large typeface title on one side of the page and fill the other with an image. On the next page I intend to use two images and two cut out edits overlayed, then I will add text to the top of the page in the same style as Self Service Magazine. The third DPS will be filled with one picture and include a large title. The final DPS will have the Polaroid edit across the two pages.

Polaroid
I found this Polaroid template to use for my DPS. I will have to cut around the inside of the Polaroid to use as a frame for my own images. This is the most realistic Polaroid I found so I am hoping that it will look affective with my own images.

Self Service Magazine Style
Self Service are known for there use of polaroid pictures. I think this would be a really fun way to edit for my DPS and make my images on brand with the magazine.
Self Service also use lines to seperate their text so this will be something I will use within my DPS editing. The Obsessions is a consistent topic they use through their magazine therefore I may use this as appart of my DPS to add more context to the layout.

Fonts
I have used Adobe fonts to find a font that matches well with the fonts used in Self Service. These are all pretty similar styles. I think I will use IvyJournal semi bold, regular and italic to create the main texts for my DPS.

Type Book
This book was a really interesting read. I learnt a lot about how typeface works on a page and the different types of typeface. Self Service magazine used serif for the body copy and sans serif for headings/titles.

Self Service Editing
This video on the Self Service magazine shows how they edit their fron pages. This was really interesting to watch and is quite helpful on seeing how the magazine likes to lay out their type and images.

Pinterest Layput Inspo
I found some really nice layout ideas for my DPS on Pinterest. I really like the blank space to draw attention to the text and images. I also quite like how some of the images are overlapped. The fonts are really nice and clearly bring attention and sophistication to the pages.

Inside Vogue
I really liked the layout for this spread on Dua Lipa. The white space again drew me to look at the pictures. I also liked the lay out of the text and in particular the large titles, I think that is definetly something I would like to incorporate into my own DPS.

Inside Vogue
Whilst looking through the most recent Vogue magazine I noticed these two trend pages on smart, tailored neutral looks which I thought linked very well to the styling and readearch I have done for this project.

Inside Vogue
Looking inside some of the more recent Vogue magazines Iayouts I noticed many with white space surrounding the images. I really love this look and think it is definetly something I want to include for my own DPS. I thought the top two Pravda DPS were quite interesting, again using the white space surrounding the model but also including key words to describe the clothing.

I have found this post really helpful and inspiring when thinking about layouts for my DPS. I love a minimal loook with only a few pictures and text. It has shown me how creative the layouts can truly be for any type of magazine.

Final Images
Here are my final images for my DPS. I am really pleased with the outcome of the images considering the restrictions and having limited resources. I love the minimal editing and raw feel to the shots. I am happy with the way the outfits worked really well with the location, colouring and how they blew in the wind for the shots. They really make me think of being isolated and the left over feelings you would imagine people would feel after war. I love the minimalistic look to all the outfits and the grayscale look to the images. The weather really reflects the mood I was trying to portray perfectly.

Edits
The Images I chose to use for my final DPS, I edited slightly on an app called Tezza. I added a filter called ‘vintage’ but turned it down to 22% so that it wasn’t too strong and overpowering as i love the original images i just wanted them all to work well together. I then aded a slight grain to the images to give them a more raw film like feel. I then experimented making some of the images black and white as I think this fits really well with the Guernica artwork.
