So the elves in Harry Potter are an issue I've been thinking about a lot. So far there is one elf besides Dobby who will show up again and, of course, we will meet Winky at some point.

Obviously enslavement is bad and having a species that likes it doesn't make it better, but beyond that there is the thing with their speech patterns. Elf speech patterns are distinctive, and I like the fact that they have a dialect, because it means they have a unique culture. I just don't really like how it's done? So I've been thinking whether it would make sense to write up a basic language for elves (I study linguistics so this is not a farfetched thing for me to do) and then create a creole from that, but I think that would be a bit too elaborate for an already pretty elaborate fanfic.

So far, I have simply done what they do in canon as well, but I will retroactively change the Elves' speech that we have encountered so far to be standard English, except for the use of the third person at almost every opportunity. I want to back that up with some lore as well and take some inspiration from the Of A Linear Circle series, which is one of my favourite fics of all time.

I still like the idea of a language for elves, and I might still brew something up for the elves to use among themselves. I might want to take some inspiration from Scots Gaelic, since Hogwarts is in the Highlands and it makes no sense that this is almost never addressed in canon. If you like conlanging or you speak Gaelic or Scots or all of the above and want to help me out, please please reach out and maybe we can do right by the fictional magical creatures in my computer :)

So... updating has slowed down, I'm sure you're aware, but don't fret. My lovely editor is a bit stressed with work as we're in between semesters. We're still commited, of course and as soon as we're back to our uni times and writing and editing can return to being a fun de-stressing activity we'll release the backlog.

in the mean time, let me know if you want the series split into 11 or 6 parts, that is to say with the holidays being their own, perhaps slightly shorter parts or devided traditionally.

Welcome to the Greed fic tumblr! As this is a Harry Potter fanfic, here is our disclaimer. We don't roll with any kind of bigotry (DNI under the cut) and part of why I started writing this is because I wanted to fix some of the issues I've been having with the original text without rewriting it completely.
