Until one day it all caught up to you. You came back, somehow, but now you know all too intimately how it feels to lose, to die, to be destroyed. Now you flinch and freeze and cower at the slightest provocation. Who even are you now if you can't be brave? The grave may have let you go, but the mortal fear still grips you tighter than ever.

flash back, one of the comics i made for studio this year.

this project was an experiment in color! i wanted my color use to be really intentional - both to highlight emotion, differentiate time period, and highlight was was in photograph vs what was just in memory or experience.

this was baby's first time working with gouache! i think my inexperience shows a little bit, but i'm mostly happy with how it ended up.

most of this was drawn in january, and i still feel the impulse to redraw some of it/do more with line weight, but i think i need to be happy with it, at least for now.

little detail for the readmore crowd: both shay and his dad do the same dorky tongue-sticking out smug smile.

here's my swapverse vision:

kalaziel, approximate age ~18, is sent to earth to guide simon, joan's father/adoptive father/mentor. kalaziel knows that he's been sent to end the world; he's determined to stay solid in his beliefs in this way.

but simon is a cool guy and a good mentor (to kalaziel and to joan, who kalaziel tries to keep his distance from), and kalaziel, despite himself, grows fond of them, in a way that makes him feel guilty.

flash forward 5-10 years. joan has a boring office job, simon is getting up there in years. something happens, either simon or kalaziel fucks up, and simon dies. kalaziel sits with simon's body and his trident and the growing horrible realization at what he has to do next.

this is his breaking point - he's been growing skeptical of the bureaucracy and their goals. he's grown to genuinely love simon and the human world and their cream cheese bagels and the snow and rain and their art galleries. now, with simon dead, kalaziel decides that it just isn't fair.

joan is deeply bored by her life - she graduated college, and now she has an apartment and a monotonous pencil-pushing office job, and simon's death sort of puts her at a standstill. she doesn't know what to do next.

then, kalaziel appears to her in the water cooler room at her office, puts his hands on his shoulder, and tells joan that she has a very important role to play in the cosmic events to come, as is dictated to him as his duty.

joan, somehow, is delighted - it's a sense of purpose, something to work for, and she would take just about anything if it means she doesn't feel totally aimless.

kalaziel follow his job to the letter and only to the letter - he'll do what he can to keep joan safe, but tries to steer her away from Ending The World. this is tough, especially since joan really really really wants to throw herself headfirst into everything relating to Her Destiny

anyway. they also meet

levi, repressed rich boy still with his high school friends who enable his mean streak. eventually he will to extricate himself from this environment, but he has to, like, want to extricate himself first? i think maybe he bullied joan in middle/high school and that's why they hate each other

claire, extremely reluctant demon who will go to any length to hide her demonic (and lesbicious) nature from her peers i think kalaziel finds out she's a demon very late, this is a point of tension in their relationship. i don't think kalaziel actually cares that much given his cavalier attitude towards the bureaucray, but i imagine claire is like "oh fuck, he's an angel, that means he must hate me, that means He Can Never Know"

mila, amateur magician who prefers asking for forgiveness after something explodes rather than waiting for permission to explode something

anna, med student in residency who will stop at nothing to figure out why she's getting so many patients with such weird supernatural symptoms??????

i do think id look good as fuck after receiving an obviously lethal blow. like i feel id do a great job looking down at my body to see a gaping hole in it, making eye contact with you, saying “oh” very quietly before i keel over… stuff like that
