A.Sztyma - Reflection form
NAME: Antonina Sztyma
 PROJECT: Bird Feeders
CAS PROJECT: Reflection and the learner profile
Reflection is used to demonstrate achievement of the learner profile. Rather than the achievement of the learner profile as the impetus for reflection, guide students to aim for meaningful CAS experiences. Then, upon reflection, they can consider whether their experience has helped them to develop one or more of the learner profile attributes.
How do my choices and actions model empathy, compassion and respect for others?
I love nature, especially animals including birds. I have been interested in them for a long time. I have wanted to take care of the environment as it is vital for me. From my point of view making sure that birds are provided a sustained amount of food is a great way to help them during winter. Birds are an important part of our ecosystem. By taking care of the environment I have shown respect to nature. Also, I have developed empathy for birds as I understood that they are amazing living creatures which play crucial life for the society and planet. I felt proud of myself that I could help them.
How does this CAS experience allow me to become a genuine inquirer?
I had to learn what birds eat, where they eat and how much they consume. I have understood their way of living and how we humans can help them and take care of them. Planning our feeding schedule was a great way to use all the information I have learnt to showed considerable support for birds.
To what extent do my CAS experiences encourage creative and critical thinking?
Coming up with eco bird feeders was an excellent way not only to help the birds but also make use of old plastic bottles. Reusing old plastic is very vital as less trash is this way produced which has a positive impact on the environment. The uncomplicated structure of the bird feeder occurred great as producing bird feeders was efficient. Planning the placement of bird feeders was a little bit tricky as we had to make sure that the distance between bird feeders is not too small, but we have overcome this issue.
How do the ethical issues that arise in my CAS experiences allow me to become principled?
The question which often arises while discussing environmental issues is "To what extent should we humans intervene within nature?". Often do I ask myself whether I ought to allow nature to be on its own or to intervene with it by for example helping it. In my opinion, many people are harming environment, and thus I, as a part of society, can act and help the environment. I have understood that I am responsible for others because I am part of society. This way a balance can be found.
How does my CAS experience allow for intellectual and/or physical risk-taking in a supportive environment?
Through discussions and overall teamwork, we have completed our CAS project. I was worried that our eco bird feeders would get lost and then become trash, but we minimalised this risk by attaching the bird feeders securely to the trees. This way at the end we could collect all the bird feeders and recycle them.

CAS PROJECT: Reflection and the learner profile
NAME: Maria Godlewska
How do my choices and actions model empathy, compassion and respect for others?
My actions were focused on others, and in the case of my project – on birds. I tried to grasp the needs of the creatures and fulfil them. However, I also tried to have their best interest in mind, even if it meant short-run sacrifices had to be made – this occurred when we took down the feeders, because the birds also have to learn to gain food on their own. I tried to balance the feelings of empathy and compassion towards hungry birds with my responsibility to prepare them for future life. This responsibility was due to my respect of the birds, as I knew they did manage to survive for decades foraging food by themselves.
How does this CAS experience allow me to become a genuine inquirer?
I had to step in the shoes of a entirely different species. The project required me to think about the needs of beings much different than myself. I therefore had to ask myself questions I would never ask, if concerned only about myself. Before I could even start to think about the main issues, I had to imagine what issues might be even important – for example, before researching which seeds are best for birds, I had to think about the fact that some foods might not be suitable for them
To what extent do my CAS experiences encourage creative and critical thinking?
I had to create bird feeders and decide on a structure that would allow for the animals to eat seeds from it. I also had to decide on the places to hang them and then make decisions to change the places based on how much seeds were eaten. However, my own critical and creative thinking was supplemented by knowledge from the internet, since a lot could be read about bird feeders there. Nevertheless, my own experience showed that some decisions had to be made by myself, for example the decision to take them down.
How do the ethical issues that arise in my CAS experiences allow me to become principled?
The biggest issue was taking down the feeders. On one hand it would mean the animals would not get easy access to seeds, yet on the other hand it allowed them to learn to find food for themselves. I had to analyse the strengths and weaknesses, as well as the moral implications of both actions and decide what would be most beneficial. I therefore sacrificed some short term happiness for a long term gain.
How does my CAS experience allow for intellectual and/or physical risk-taking in a supportive environment?
Every decision we made, such as deciding on which seeds to use or the parks where we hung the feeders, had to be supported by other members. When one of us came forward with a proposition and others agreed on it, they had to support it 100%. I had the feeling that when my ideas were agreed on, my team members would do everything in order to make them go according to plan. I felt support from them and I hope I also gave support. Thanks to this I could more easily decide on riskier, more innovative solutions, as I felt that help and determination will be offered from my teammates.

The official last day of our project - all the feeders were taken off. We disassembled the feeders and recycled the individual parts and putting bottle caps into special containers

Even though the feeders were nearly empty, we took them off from the park by our school. The season is changing, so the birds should be able to find their own food

We visited all three parks today. In each of them some seeds were gone, however not as much as before (especially in Szczęśliwicki park’s case). We think we should consider ending our project, since the weather did get nicer and we read that if birds are able to find food for themselves, people should not feed them

Once again the seeds in Skaryszewski park were not eaten. We decided to take all of our feeders and go to a smaller park nearby to see if maybe there will be more birds

When refilling the feeders in the park by our school we saw that two feeders were empty, while two were almost full. We decided to hang the full feeders closer to the place where the empty feeders were located to see if there are more birds there

After a discussion, we decided to go back to Skaryszewski park and relocate two of the bird feeders to Szczęśliwicki park. The second park is way bigger and the feeders were way emptier there

We revisited all three parks and concluded that the birds in Szczęśliwicki park must be the most hungry since nearly all seeds were gone, while in Skaryszewski - almost none

All together we went to Szczęśliwicki park and hung four bird feeders. We decided to put them in opposite parts of the park, in order for more birds to realise that they were there

January 25th
We met up and planned our next steps. Tosia was going to research what type of food is best to feed birds and Weronika and Maria were going to create the feeders. Next, we would hang them in three parks that we chose - Szczęśliwicki, Skaryszewski and a small park by our school. Then, every now and then we would check if the seeds were eaten and refill the feeders.

We started gathering plastic bottles for our bird feeders. We decided that this will also be a great way to reuse the garbage from our homes.
