mp – evaluation.
Starting this project already with an interest in true crime made it an almost automatic choice to do it for my MP. As well having considered true crime for other projects before. Finding a problem within the topic is what led me to push this project further as I felt this was an opinion that some share. A lot would never even have thought of it considering it involves serial killers — in conversation it's not a topic people want to engage in because it's not the most normal conversation to be having. But I feel that it is so relevant to today's society of recognising women more.
There being a lack of knowledge or representation for female serial killers stems from the same misogynistic views as a women not being able to do a man's job. This is a means of a way to represent women, but not glorify them — reminding readers than the issue is the murder, but it's also the fact that society thinks women couldn't kill. But they can and they do, they just use methods that make them stand out from their male counterparts. Their methods reflect their evolution, their nature is to gather and not hunt, so killing is always a means for their personal gain for longer periods of time. While men use methods that offer quicker releases so they'll hunt and stalk and use torture methods to overpower and get what they want. It's important that this is understood as it explains why we don't hear of many female serial killers, but also why the ones that are more notorious are known a lot more because of similarities in the way they kill.
Applying this understanding into my outcome relied on the idea that it is an unserious, but also serious topic. Using a small amount of humour, but also a factual tone that creates the realisation of issue — why should we care if it's about serial killers, but also representation is representation and this is representing women are still disadvantaged regarding to whether they can kill or not.
This term I decided to submit my ISTD response to officially submit, and it was undoubtedly a huge learning experience and push for me that you could say was a lot harder than I expected, but I also did expect it. It pushed me editorially, since it's only something I'd started to focus on after second year. It clearly de-railed me from my major project for a while which I think lost me a lot of exploration time. It's obviously on me for not managing myself better, but I think because ISTD is commended for how hard it is, it made me focus on it more so I could get it to that standard of what they're expecting. As always I think I pushed through with both ISTD and with getting back on track with my major project.
Experiencing two huge projects on the go definitely creates a lot of stress, which I personally think I handled well, not letting it consume me. Originally having the goal to submit on the original date, I realised fairly quickly that whatever I'd submit would not be to the standard I know I could achieve, with the extra week I was able to create something that is substantial which satisfies the pleaser and achiever in me. I've spoke about the loss of exploration time, but I think and I hope I made up for it through my development.
I think what you can see throughout the process of my development is my understanding for something not working and instead of completely abandoning it, I push it again or try it a different way before letting it go. I think it was important to have this mindset during my development as it pushed my outcome to become something that I really loved. As a hopeful editorial designer this is the type of method I want to carry with me as it allows me to consider the latest trends and interpret them into something of my own – using contexts and narratives through editorial.

final printed process book:
some spreads:
also really happy with how my process book came out – I wanted to add in the fact I kept stubbornly calling it a database even though I was told to leave it. so I created a text visual that builds after I've used database, whether in a presentation or my learning agreement.
for the rest the aim was to not have too much in it – so most detailed development is kept to just my blog whilst key development points are in it.

mp – printing band.
first image is the first print that got a smudge so we reprinted and I fitted it to the slipcase. I'm really happy I chose to add this, I think it adds to the experience for the readers.

mp – cover band.
designing the cover band that will have a bulk of information on as well as the quote/title. hoping to print on red card. adjustments will be made to band size once I've made the box sleeve, but these are pretty much final.
I wanted to add a bit of humour into it since it's a sensitive topic. I brought it into the content warning and the end tab (the furthest top left).

mp – test prints.
test printing a couple that haven't been printed before just on printer paper.
(not been cut down)
just need to edit the fourth spread image as it's quite over exposed.
changed it to this image as the other kept printing weirdly no matter what I did.

genene jones:
what's super interesting about genene's case is that the majority of investigators etc, believe genene could've killed up to 40-60 babies between 1971–1982 which is huge considering only 6 had been identified.
it made me want to consider how I can use what I did with beverley allitts two unknown victims, so for this one I wanted to visualise the suggestion of a lot more victims. the icons start dropping off from both the victims killed and the victims survived sides, because again, it's unknown how many genene killed or attempted to kill. the icons falling off the page create the suggestion to the reader that there is possibly plenty more. I also made sure to include the opacity system that killed = 100% for all of them on the left page and survived = 70% for the right side.

dana sue gray:
had a struggle with the first spread (not the cover) as the imagery for her online wasn't that great. I had to consider the quality – worse quality works better small leaving me to using quite a dark image for the first spread. I ended up just using light text instead which I think still keeps it cohesive especially if I run into this problem again.

aileen wuornos:
just had to write this cause of re-reading her case to put in this.
it's hard not to feel sorry for her, even after the crimes. I think that's why on the victims spread I wanted to include that her upbringing shaped her views on men — creating a slight hint to the fact she was kind of doomed from the start which she was with her father in prison, her mother leaving her and her grandfather's abuse.

mp – covers.
changing the cover to be their complete picture — the eyes will be seen on their own through the windows in the from and back cover of the box. I want to have to so that you can see more than one pair of eyes. ones looking from the back and one from the front creating a slightly creepy look.
all their eyes are in the same place – just above the top third of the page.

mp – outcome update.
I've decided I'm going to still do them all a separate zines, that all fit inside a box — creating a box set with a window. this will then mean the viewer can put them back in any order and their eyes will be seen through the cover.
for the information I wanted to have tabs between the categories if I was binding them together, but instead I want to do a band that will fold into the box. I can then add more information on the other side the the readers can take off and read too.
this would also be instead of creating a full cover for the box set — I also quite like the original colour of grey board as I think it matches the black and white imagery. it also reminds me more of a prison door.
I now just need to decide how I want to do the tab — coloured card or print the colour? I think coloured card would be nicer and look more polished, especially in red as it makes the most sense and with black text.
I'd have the quote on the front of the band and the message/meaning on the back or on the other side. I'd also need to consider where I'm putting the trigger warnings. possibly something small on the front and then on the part that folds in is a full trigger list or content warning.
