recent realization has been just how much of rgu is based on soviet art. we all know by now how ohtori's warping architecture is inspired by constructivism

but apart from that, the thing that makes rgu's cinematography special—it's usage of esoteric images to create visual new meanings + it's repeated shots of lined up objects—is so clearly Eisenstein

rgu directly utilizes Eisenstein's theory of montage—and it's my favorite usage of it too. it feels like the technique was created ex professo for rgu's cinematography. i could think of no better use for it. that girl sure is revolutionary.

At its core Utena is about the loss of innocence, the awakening, or revolution of adolescence. When childish ideas are challenged and discarded when reality smacks you in the face. Ideals like being a prince or childish relationship dynamics are tossed away, one who graduates discards it all but is capable of navigating the adult world. 

This is why gnostic and shadow imagery is so prolific in Utena and adolescent of Utena. It’s the awakening of the world to how it really is.

Utena is deconstructive, not in that it’s a deconstruction of its genera, it pays deep respect to that. Utena is deconstructive in that it depicts growing to adulthood as a break compared to what came before.

i really like and connect with utena because she operates under the belief that she is immune from being a victim.

she believes that her bold and brash attitude and her boyish presentation innately protects her from being targeted by predatory men, and that if she or someone that she loves is being preyed on, she would immediately notice it and shut it down.

but when it comes down to it, she doesn't notice the abuse enacted on her or anthy, who she perpetually swears to protect, because she thinks it's something that couldn't happen to her or her friends, just so long as it's under her watch. however, in reality, she is just as vulnerable as anyone else, even viewing akio as a romantic pursuit that she has to compete with anthy for at points, rather than the actual groomer that he is.

i think it's such a realistic portrayal of what is a pretty common mindset amongst young girls, especially those who are more outspoken than others. it's really tragic and delightful and i love seeing victims that aren't just the soft, wishy-washy ideal the media likes to project on victims, painting them as helpless in the hands of an abuser.

it really emphasises how manipulative and normalised these kinds of societal constructs and experiences are, how they might be happening around you, to your friends, to you, how you might not even realise it - because people feed to you an idea of a perfect victim, of the kind of person a victim should be, and you think "no, that couldn't be me," all while those same things wear you right down, and you're still thinking you're the one in control.

I think about the fact that Guardian Shine cared for Mizi like a daughter and I feel incredibly conflicted. Mizi was sent off with all her favorite things because she was very attached to the life she had before the Anakt Garden, meaning she lived a very happy and loving life with her parent. The way Guardian Shine rests against the glass, the gentle smile, you can tell that the love between them was mutual. Giving gifts, making dresses... they seemed so sweet, so caring. Shine seems to be the only segyein worthy of the title "Alien Parent", the artbook going so far as to describe this scene as "a mother seeing her daughter".

If Guardian Shine loved Mizi this much, why would she allow Mizi to participate in such a brutal death game? Did she ever regret it? Is Mizi resentful of aliens now? Would she hold a grudge against her own "mother"?

in episode 1, utena defeated saionji with only a wooden sword, without any help from prince dios (i believe this was the case) as would be observed in later episodes. saionji was using the sword of dios against utena in the duel. i find this to be very impressive on utena's part because saionji was a skilled swordsman. it reminded me of how utena managed to pass through the rose gate without the sword of dios in episode 39, with only bare, bloody hands and a heart overflowing with love for anthy. unlike akio who failed to cut through the gate even with the strongest soul sword, the one pulled out of utena.

to commemorate the 28th year since revolutionary girl utena started airing (02/04/1997), here are some parallels between the first and final episodes of rgu (per chronological order of episode 1):

utena and anthy's hands slipping away from each other's grasp both in the opening and episode 39.

the duelling arena being destroyed as prince dios wakes up in the opening versus the duelling arena being destroyed by the swords of humanity's hatred in episode 39.
