Fully caught up on Revenged Love and every molecule in my body is vibrating into the eighth dimension. Here, have some more ambient thoughts on this show that is ruining my life while I blast Vietnamese pop in my house at an irresponsible decibel.
The ship name for Jiang Xiaoshuai and Guo Chengyu on the Chinese internet is "guojiang," a smush of their family names that sounds a lot like the Chinese word for "jam," which is both very cute, and also why if you watch any platforms with Chinese bullet comments, you'll see a lot of "果酱99" for "Jam 4EVA" basically.
Related, no one has made this a thing, but the smash of "ChiWei" sounds like "ciwei," or "刺猬" or hedgehog, and I'm mad nobody's started doing this because it's so stinking cute.
The plotline with Wu Suowei's mom hiding her illness from her son feels over the top until I tell you the summer I was 18 and balls deep in a summer situationship in Shanghai with a boy who was far, far too pure of heart for my shenanigans, I ended up getting conscripted to photoshop a fake medication label onto a family friend's prescription so that his nearest and dearest could conceal to him the fact that he was ACTIVELY IN PALLIATIVE CARE as he DYING OF LIVER CANCER. I did this using a bootleg copy of Adobe that my dad's best friend's son bought off of some guy on a corner. This man is now the father of a HUMAN CHILD. The situationship was also there for some reason.
Frustrating language nuances from eps 17/18: The subtitles for these two episodes really fell short of conveying the intensity of both the scene with Chi Cheng and Wu Suowei breaking up and when Chi Cheng stopped by Wang Shuo's house to step on his neck and abandon his snake child. It's not that any of it is wrong, but the dialog and delivery really has you by the fucking throat in both of those scenes, and the translation absolutely failed to capture the momentum and fury with Wu Suowei or the melancholy acknowledgement of all that had been lost with Wang Shuo.
English parallel doesn't exist language nuance from eps 17/18: When Jiang Xiaoshuai and Guo Chengyu are flirting and being so extremely normal and happy while their respective besties and worsties are having arguably the worst time of their lives, Jiang Xiaoshuai says that Guo Chengyu should use his "心眼," or "xinyan," to investigate the truth of what happened with Wang Shuo all those years ago. The translation, again, isn't wrong, but it doesn't fully capture the meaning of the phrase. In fact, I can't find a satisfying English language version of this at all. The technical definition according to Pleco is "heart, intention, conscience, consideration, cleverness, tolerance," which I guess is all true, but it's also frequently translated as pettiness, as scheming. It might be easier to think about its opposite, where someone without 心眼, or literally "heart eye," is someone who is pure and simple and straightforward. Someone with a lot of eyes in their heart is scheming and can be petty, who can be manipulative--and it's not necessarily meant as a condemnation of character, but just someone who isn't simplistic, usually someone who is clever. One of the big jokes that went around in Mysterious Lotus Casebook fandom on the Chinese internet is that between the trio of Li Lianhua, Di Feisheng and Fang Xiaobao, they had 100 heart eyes, with Li Lianhua having 800 heart eyes, Di Feisheng having 200 eyes in his heart and Fang Xiaobao having -900 eyes in his heart.
Neutral language nuance from eps 17/18: The scene where Chi Cheng talks to Wang Shuo about he has only a measure of respect toward him, it's a technically correct translation -- but the usage also implies a kind of forbearance. I respect you, I forbear the things you do because of the person you were to me, the people we were to each other. It's a gritted-teeth acceptance that someone's left a mark on you, however much you don't want to carry that weight any longer, that you have a responsibility to them and the role they either currently or formerly occupied in your life. It's the kind of thing empresses scream about in Chinese harem dramas, that the emperor holds no love for her, that he only cares for her with respectful forbearance, for the role she plays in the hierarchy of the palace.
Fun language nuance from eps 17/18: When Wu Suowei shows up at the clinic and Jiang Xiaoshuai hasn't clocked how serious the situation is, he jokes about how Wu Suowei have been thrown out given how much Chi Cheng "宠"s him. That specific word, "chong" translates into "favor" or "spoil," but is contextually used specifically in reference to how the emperor favors a concubine--which leads also into how in the next few exchanges, Jiang Xiaoshuai references how Wu Suowei occupies the "正" position, or the "central," "formal" position. Historical polygamy in China was structured around only one woman holding the actual role of wife, or the 正妻 (or "central palace" or 中宫 if you're nasty and in the actual formalized palace etc etc), with all other concubines in the household as technical servants under the control of the wife.

Idk how to word this, but CC giving back the snake is one of the saddest things so far in this show. He's letting go of his past self. The self that's been with him by his side for so many years.

So remember this moment when Chi Cheng and Chengyu go outside to "talk"
And then they don't really talk at all? In fact, considering how integral their relationship is to the plot, we *never* actually see them talk.
Suowei and Xiaoshuai constantly talk to each other about everything, but Chi Cheng and Chengyu don't need words. They just need one glance, not even that, they just need to think of the other, and they know exactly what is going on in their head.
They come up with plans and make decisions, and they never bother informing the other about them because when they need to, they will just know, no words required. They just go along with everything the other sets up no hesitation no questions asked.
No wonder they are driving everyone absolutely mad with their relationship
