Gwyneth means fortunate, blessed, and happiness (Welsh).

I dont blame the shadows that they sing and dance around her. Maybe they just want to be happy after a life filled with self-hatred, loneliness and abuse. Maybe Gwyn is what Azriel needs, and his shadows know this. 🥺

Elriel used to be my thing. I loved it, I wrote multiple analyses on it, I talked about it for months to my family. And then I saw one post and it changed my entire viewpoint. I don’t remember where this post is from or who wrote it, I’m so sorry (pretty sure it was an emeriel shipper?). But the post was talking about how they thought Azriel needed to be with someone who would get reactions out of him - make him angry, sad, frustrated, happy. And that made me find Elriel (my ultimate, favorite ship up until then) like the most boring, flat ship I’d seen in this entire series.

Sure, you can argue that in the Azriel pov Elain gets lots of reactions out of him and um yes she sure did, but it’s only arousal?? That’s it. The only mention we get of actual romantic feelings, of pining for her, are when he says that short thing about the two of them sharing glances, brushing fingers. But that’s all. Nothing about how he makes her feel. He’s pretty much the same emotionless character as he was to everyone else, except with Elain he’s horny.

Now, with Gwyn, there’s potential. Look at the way he interacts with her! It’s so cute!!! He’s smiling and laughing, and though we don’t get direct “she makes me feel…” it’s obvious that she makes him feel good. 

Elain keeps him up, Gwyn helps him sleep. Elain causes him pain, Gwyn gives him peace.

You can label sleeplessness and heartache as indicators for a relationship, but honestly, it just sounds like Moriel all over again.

For a healthy, strong relationship to grow, it requires peace. And when Azriel’s with Gwyn, he’s at peace. Which is so important.

Although before he gets anywhere near my precious girl he needs to do some serious self-reflection and possibly get a therapist because I’m so fucking pissed at him rn

GWYNRIEL HEADCANON #1

—for my fellow gwynriel shippers; sorry if this is too long, i might just write a real fic one day—

them singing together. just—them singing together.

maybe at nessian mating ceremony. if gwyn comes, that is. and all other guests clear out. so there’s just nesta and cassian, and feyre and rhys dancing slowly even though there’s no music. amren and varian sitting in a corner, and emerie, elain and mor talking to each other softly.

and gwyn and az at a table. azriel isn’t drunk, but he did drink a few glasses of wine. which is why he is smiling. and his shadows are out, swirling around him, even daring to go across the table, to where gwyn is sitting. he can’t control them completely, and he doesn’t know why (but we do lol). when he realizes that they’re almost touching gwyn, he freaks out because he thinks that gwyn’s going to freak out.

only she doesn’t. she smiles, tells him that they’re marvelous.

and maybe it’s because of the wine, maybe because of her smile, but azriel says, “i’ve never heard you sing.” he did, of course, but never a full song, never in earnest. those were murmurs, soft, quiet notes, sung almost sotto voce.

gwyn just arches an eyebrow at him, a smile still on her face. “so?”

and he shrugs, afraid of scaring her, afraid of himself.

“i’ve never heard you sing either.”

azriel is quiet for a moment, then he speaks quietly. “it’s the one thing i got from my mother. the rest of me is just the same as my father was, an illyrian brute.”

gwyn thinks to herself that azriel is a rather sad, self-pitying drunk. she doesn’t comment on it though, but rather surprises even herself by saying, “choose a song.”

she looks him right in the eye, and sees his eyes light up. “any song?” he asks.

she nods. “as long as i know the lyrics and as long as the song isn’t rude.”

“which implies that you know songs with rude lyrics.”he can’t hide the amusement in his voice.

“guilty.”

he tells her the name of a song then. an old one. he isn’t even sure she knows it. his mother sang it to him. he doesn’t tell her that, though. he just looks at her, as she starts singing. halfway through it, he joins her. they sing softly, his shadows dance. and for a moment, he is perfectly content with his life.

when they finish, gwyn’s eyes are lined with silver. she looks away, and whispers, more to herself than to him, “my mother used to sing that song to my sister and me when we were children.”

with that, she rises from the table, bids everyone good night, and leaves.

azriel catches rhysand’s eye, and his friend just smirks at him, as if he knows something azriel does not.

he sits there for a long while, head both empty and so full of thoughts at the same time.

So remember in acosf when nesta when to go train and she ran into Azriel and this was said...

"... Az said, his shadows lingering in the archway, as if fearful of the bright sunlight in the ring. I'm not interrupting anything, am I?".

I have seen enough posts celebrating that Azriels shadows disappearing around Elain is a good thing. But, it isnt just in front Elain, its sunlight in general. His shadows disappear in the presence of light, and Elain needs sunlight to thrive. She has said this over and over throughout the series. Im not going to bother arguing that point because it would be a complete erasure of her character.

I don't think that both shadows and sunlight can survive together, hence the qoute. And thats not a bad thing. Maybe elriel isnt meant to be apart from sexual attraction.

Continue to ship elriel, I wont condemn you but Azriel shadows shouldnt have to erased. They're his identity, hes a shadowsinger. Its apart of him, whether you like it or not. As is his dark past, his abusive childhood, and overall dark demeanor.

Where they dispear in Elain's presence, they come alive around Gwyn. And I find that to be absoulutely beautiful. In a life filled with torture and hatred, Gwyn makes him feel at peace. Azriel isnt as inclined to hide his facial expressions and emotions because there is no set expectations in between them. To explain this further, Gwyn knows what Azriel is. She knows what those hands have done to an extent of course. Elain doesnt, and Azriel acknowledges that in his pov.

Im choosing to listen to the shadows, they are the reason Azriel is an amazing spymaster that excels at espionage after all. As Azriel mentioned himself, they have the habit of sleeping around Elain but dance and sing at the thought of Gwyn.

After weeks of serious work, decided to make something more casual. And since I had so many occasions where people confused other characters with him and/or asked me to draw him SO MANY TIMES, here he is.

Rhysand from A court of thorns and roses series by Sarah J Maas.

I'm not really into these books anymore, but this fandom has always been so supportive and loud that I think that every once and a while I'll make something for you, even though it's not my story of choice. And when you get a character described as Rhys is, it becomes an artistic challenge to nail him down. 😊

I get that he is kinda more on a lean side, but buff dudes are more my taste and that transfers in my work sometimes. Sorry not sorry, I guess? 😂
